RE: Heat for a class B with no electric ?

Chain said, "What do you do to keep the van warm when you are in the rocky mountains in january ?" Chain, you are one tough dude. We bailed out on camping at Bryce and Zion when the temps went down to 15-20F the past two nights and stayed in Kanab. I think we burned 2 gal of propane last night just keeping our rig at minimum thermostatic setting for safety. That's about four days of supply. As mentioned in an earlier post I believe most of the heat loss is thru the glass too. This is a difficult situation... Rockies in January... wow. Jay Warming in Las Vegas for a few days.

Failed inverter? Nope... loose plug in!

Hi All, A postcard from lovely Kanab, UT. My inverter stopped working the other day in AZ. Didn't need it for a while... no TV reception at Mather CG in South Rim, My rig is an 06 RT RS Adventurous. Battery power never got below the 1/3 mark (if I believe the info) and I have no reason to believe that the inverter shut down on it's own. I followed the RT manual recommendations to restart the inverter. Nothing. Checked the 15 amp fuse. Looked fine but changed it anyways. Nothing. THEN decided to check inverter connections. Three prong plug worked its way loose. WOW, that must have been alot of vibration. Now if I can just get the supersensitive driver side running light to stay on... maybe I'll tape it in place. Moral: As usual START AT THE BEGINNING. Happy trails, Jay in increasingly cold Utah.

RE: Cost of New Class B's-Why do you want them?

HERE'S MY VIEW: Boarhog said, "When I look at the prices of new Class B's I'm surprised considering how much used Class A you can get for the same money." FOR SURE. MOST EXPENSIVE PER SQ. FT. Why is this a good purchase, especially if it is the only RV you will own. LIKE OTHERS HAVE ALREADY SAID, IT'S LIFESTYLE. WE ARE NOT RETIRED, WE COULD AFFORD THE RIG, AND WE ALSO USE MOTELS TO MAKE HYBRID TRIPS UP TO THREE WEEKS PER TRIP. PROBABLY A MINORITY VIEW BUT WE'RE OUT HERE. Is it useful beyond relatively short trips? FIVE CONSECUTIVE NIGHTS IS ABOUT OUR LIMIT. WE DON'T LIKE TO STRUGGLE SO WHEN IT FEELS MORE LIKE CAMPING THAN RVING OR WHEN THE WEATHER IS A MAJOR FACTOR (VERY COLD OR RAINY)WE GO TO DECENT MOTELS. THESE DAYS DECENT TO US MEANS $100 A NIGHT WITH RISKS OF NOISE, ODORS ETC. AND IT HAS TO BE BUDGETED. Would a Class B be useful as a toad to a larger RV? DON'T KNOW ABOUT THIS. SOUNDS LIKE TOO MUCH BAGGAGE TO ME. JAY

RE: Boondocker fan

booster said, "We don't need a huge fan with big airflow, but want to move the air a bit for comfort, and to get the heat out of the front of the van when we stop and don't feel like putting on the Skreenz." When I saw the title "Boondocker fan" my first thought was that you wanted the fan to distribute heat from the furnace and maybe provide background "white" noise during the night. To that end we use an O2 Cool cheap battery powered fan for a few reasons. Regarding "heat out of the front (engine)," Have you tried raising the hood to ventilate engine heat? I feel it's very effective but unsightly and draws attention. Our roof vent/fan does a great job of drawing heat up and out of the rig. Is yours inadequate? Jay

RE: tolls

We are in Upstate NY this week for business, leaf peeping and wine shopping on Cayuga. The Thruway "is what it is", a necessary evil that we all use from time to time, like our segment from Erie to Buffalo. Glad we are not rushing around too much and can $ave a few bucks by avoiding it. Wish the weather was more hospitable for us NC'ers... it's darn cold. Jay

RE: Using the water system in cold weather...

I've said this in earlier posts: We dry camped at Yellowstone in Sept. a few years ago with overnight temps in the low 20's and used the water system. If the temps dip into the 20's here in NC before I winterize I'll run an extension cord from the house and plug in a 1500 watt heater at a low temp setting. I realize NC is different from OH. Never had a problem. Jay

Top 25 Country Music Classics...edited

This is old, but I'm forgetful. I stumbled on the list last night and decided that I had to share a laugh... and if you've seen it already just sing along. I'm not listing any of the more crude, sexist titles but how about these candidates: "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away?" "I Still Miss You, Baby, But My Aim's Getting Better." "I'm So Miserable Without You, It's Like Having You Here." "If I Can't Be Number #1 In Your Life, Then It's #2 On You" "Mama, Get A Hammer, There's A Fly On Papa's Head." "My Wife Ran Off With My Best Friend And I Sure Do Miss Him." "If The Phone Don't Ring, You'll Know It's Me." "She's Acting Single And I'm Drinking Doubles." My favorite: "I'll Marry You Tomorrow But Let's Honeymoon Tonight!" Need the complete list? It's up to Rodger... I'll email it to him. Jay

Senseo coffee pods...

My first post in this forum. We usually reside in the the CVC (ie class B) forum. We have zeroed in on these ground coffee pods but don't use them in the machine. We just soak them in a cup of boiling water... works great. Anyone use pods as "tea bags?" Jay

RE: Tinted hot water in my B...

I unscrewed the anode this afternoon, drained the hot water heater, then stuck the garden hose with sprayer into the tank to flush it out. I did this a few times. Hope this is what you meant. Replaced the anode, partially filled the holding tank, flipped on the water pump. When the pump went silent, I flipped on the heater. Waited a few minutes, ran cold water (clear) then ran hot water (CLEAR). All appear well for now... I hope the ceramic lining in the hot water tank hasn't been compromised. I have two trips in the B coming up soon so we'll see... Thanks for the tips, Jay
