RE: tolls

Never had a problem in Ohio, NY (don't go in the city or use NYC roads)or elsewhere with being charged more for tolls. Two axles, less than 10 feet in height and we zip right through the human-manned toll booths with no problem. I won't get an EZ Pass, because there is nothing prohibiting the company from selling or turning over your travel info to anyone who requests it--lawyers, insurance companies, employers, etc.

RE: Rain Gutter Caulking Replacement on a B

Joe, I had to do it to my 22-year old Xplorer this spring and it is no picnic. In making such repairs, i wound up removing the rain gutter, scraping off the old caulk and applying the new stuff (bought it from Camping World). To clean off the old residue of the caulk, as well as other stubborn adhesives, I alwasy use Goo Gone, which you can pick up at any hardware store. I agree with the other posters to let sleeping dogs lie and wait until there's a leak before you go after this problem :-) Happy Retirement.

RE: Age of Used Class B's

Our Xplorer is an 1987 and was in decent shape when we bought it--paid way under NADA price. had only 60K on it and did need some work from just sitting unused. We now try and get out monthly. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles as the newer ones have, but it suits our purposes for now. I like that it was built on the the Dodge B350 1 ton van--it runs very solid. Just replaced the radiator, but after 22 years, some things, used or not, are bound to give. we'll keep going in it for a long time I am sure.

RE: Are you waving at me?

With the 87 Xplorer we have, we get alot of stares and we wave right back. A great custom that reminds DW of the courtesy and friendliness boaters show each other. Life's too short so why not enjoy it with a wave?:p

RE: What Did You Name Your 'B' And Why?

HARVY. If you7 leave the "H" silent it sounds just like "RV" DW's clever play on words:D

RE: Class B's that will fit in a garage.

HandBasket, That Xplorer looks a lot like ours, which is a 87 228. HARVY is an oldie and a goodie, as it looks like this one you found is. The awning looks interesting. I would like to get one on ours at some point.

RE: Too Many Campers

As many of you know, we almost always boondock when we camp. This summer has been somewhat of a challenge finding some of our favorite spots. There are just too many people camping this summer. I don't know about the campgrounds, but it seems like everyone is out there camping in their tents. I drove by one of our favorite spots a month ago or so and there were 8 vehicles and a U-Haul trailer there. With the economy in the tank and people not taking as many vacations and with no campground fees, it's a good way to enjoy the outdoors but I wish they'd all go to back to Disney World. It's the economy alright but they are 'not' vacationers. I'm seeing the same thing but they are people living in their tents/RV's in the CG's and in the boondocking areas for those with even less money. The day one of the counties in TN shagged all the tent people out of the national parks they all headed for the CG's.....that's whole nuther story about that week.:R Wow! I have not heard of that yet. If it is really starting to happen as much as you say then that means things are going to get a lot worse for our country before they get better. Sorry to hear about these people's misfortune.

RE: Class B's that will fit in a garage.

It's always fun to see the looks of the parking attendants as I pay on my way out. More often than not I get some questions of interest and smiles, but it certainly is different than the other exiting vehicles.

RE: Too Many Campers

mtdew, you are right on target. I was at Disney a couple of months ago and that park attendance was waaaayyyyy down Hotels are giving great deals. Universal Studios was almost empty. That being said, I understand why more people are going the camping route--it's much less expensive, it allows you to see some great scenery and in our hurry up world of technical gadgetry and isolation, it allows families and spouses to reconnect. I am all for those benefits for as many Americans (and Canadians) as possible. It makes us better people. Now, not all of the newbies may be as well versed in camping etiquette as they need to be, but that's where more experienced campers, such as those that frequent these forums can, with charity and respect, become educators. What a great chance to spread the camping "gospel."

RE: Class B's that will fit in a garage.

Handbasket, Ours is an 87 Xplorer 228. No air conditioner, just a Fan-Tastic Fan, which works really well. The cool thing with the low profile is that i have actually driven it to the airport and parked in the covered garages :-)

RE: Class B's that will fit in a garage.

Book, We own one of Ray Frank's 87 Xplorers. Great unit for me, DW and dog. Has a lowered floor 2 foot extension on the back for permanent full size bed and a one piece fiberglass roof. It is great and we LOVE the profile on it.

RE: Retrofitting Air

chainegang, thanks for the suggested add-on. I think this looks like the best route for me to go, along with the Maxx Air Vent. I appreciate everyone's suggestions on this topic.

RE: Retrofitting Air

Jim... Very cool fan. My path here may be simpler is better :-) And of course, keeping the budget in mind, my DW is also in favor of "simpler" ... and that is an important factor to consider as it gets pretty tight in some Bs :-)

RE: Retrofitting Air

Thanks folks for all the great help.. I think the Maxx Air Route may be the way to go on this--budget and DW's wishes to be the deciding factor here.

RE: Retrofitting Air

thrifty, I agree...but it's like going to the car dealer ... you always see the nice new shiny models and wonder what it would be like to own one. However, seeing as I can actually work on my B, can get my hands in it and make it ours, it will be a long time before I get a new model...just fun to look at.

RE: Retrofitting Air

Jack, thanks for the schematic.. is that using an existing 14 x 14 opening? That may work, however, I think I may have to pass on the hitch-mounted generator option. The Xplorer sucks gas now, the added weight will have be signing up to become a member of OPEC to keep it all moving. Plus the DW is not a fan of anything but a bike rack as a hitched option at this point. Long story. chainegang, I actually did run across that Maxx Air option, ...Is it basically just a replacement for the crank-open top or do I have to replace the whole fan unit? My goal is to have a source of fresh air--keep the temps down--when it starts to pour rain again, which seems to happen at least once per trip. I'd like to keep the overall contour of the Xplorer as much as possible.

Retrofitting Air

I need to ask any of you that have older Bs that did not come equipped with air if you retrofitted and how you did it. Our 87 Xplorer did not come with it, and most times the Fantastic Fan works great--except when it rains and we have to close all the windows. In summer that can get a little "tense' (just had that happen last weekend on the way though Indiana). Ideas? I don't want to, and can't afford a boatload of money into this solution and putting a house unit in on the windows is not an option (if anyone was thinking that way). Thanks P.S. The guy parked next to us had a brand spanking new Roadtrek 210 and were we ever envious of him when the rain started--heard his nice air unit going.

RE: Electric Short

I think I may have isolated the problem.. a bad socket on the passenger side tail light... when i wiggle the wires there, the lights will occasionally go outand on, and the other tail light and side markers act in accordance. It leads me to believe that these lights are hooked in a series and that a bad connection on one will effect all. It's a $5 part and a quick cut and splice. I'll let you all know.

RE: Electric Short

Jim, It's only the tail lights--both--that aren't working properly...the rest are fine. The ironic thing is that Igot them to work for a while yesetrday...put everything back together...pushed the wiring back in to the channels on the inside as well..and all seemed to be fine. Then last night no tails. When I remove the covers and "jiggle them" a bit, then I get lights, so that tells me something there isn't making a connection. The mechanic who did the state inspection seemed to think it was an open ground and I cleaned all the grounding wires and screws to the tail and marker lights--I thought--that were in the light housings. Problem is I am not sure where the common ground is on this thing.

Electric Short

As some of you may know, my dear wife and I purchased a 87 Xplorer last summer and have taken it on a few roadtrips. Imagine my astonishment to learn that I almost did not pass the state inspection the other day because the tail lights have stopped working. There must be a short somewhere, was the diagnosis. Spent over an hour yesterday puling the lamps(from outside), and cleaning the grounds. Everything seemed to work fine, until last night when I flipped on the tail lights and --- nothing. Because the back end is fiberglass, the manufacturers have used screws to serve as a ground, but not sure that is the problem. Hauling out Livingston's book today, but I appreciate any insights into this issue. Going on the road, I was hoping this week, to a conference in Steubenville, but can't drive at night without tail lights--especially in the mountains.
