RE: Handy Hints, Gadgets, Products & Gizmos

I don't mean to interupt the bantering, but getting back to the original topic of "Handy Hint, Gadgetss, Products & Gizmos, I would like to add information on what is helpful for us when we boondock in the high sierras.
We use these relatively inexpensive solar rope lights around our screened room and campsite to provide illumination in the dark of the night. Where we go dry camping, the only light at night is the moon or lanterns, these solar rope lights provide us with just enough light to feel like we have outdoor electric lighting.
here is the link for the solar lights: http://www.collectionsetc.com/Product/solar-tube-outdoor-lights.aspx/_/Ntt-solar
PS
Those that wish to continue the fun bantering back and forth may want to start a fun new thread. JMO

RE: Stove/Oven not getting gas

The oven's pilot will not lite. I do not hear or smell any propane when I turn it on to lite. Burners do not lite either.

Stove/Oven not getting gas

We went dry camping (BLM Land)in upper elevation this past weekend. Our rig is still there, we are going up again on Friday. Our stove top and oven do not seem to be getting any gas and are not lighting. Our frigerator is running fine on propane, the hot water heater is working and the propane heater is working as well. We have a 1999 Southwind MH. Any thoughts on trouble shooting this problem.

RE: hijacks it gets worse

I have a question, what are the Federal Police doing to prevent this crime from reocurring and what are they doing to apprehend the theives? I again, am glad to hear that no one suffered any physical injuries. How long do you expect to remain in Mexico and what are your plans from here? Were your identification documents stolen as well. Did they take your money? I am just interested in finding out how operationally these theives are conducting business.

RE: rv hijack near victoria

I am happy to hear you are safe. I understand fear being a factor. I would think that law enforcement should be able to locate your RV sooner or later if they were doing their job with diligence. I don't know how large you rig is, but most do stand out for identification purposes. I look forward to hearing the rest of the story. Take care and make your safety a priority. Make sure you are keeping relatives apprised of your whereabouts and your circumstances. Please keep us posted, we are concerned.

RE: TOURIST DIRECTOR OF SONORA

I feel that many Americans are deterred from RVing in Mexico because of the negative publicity regarding the drug cartels. When I speak about my travels to Mexico, many express fear.
A suggestion to ease the minds of tourists that RV travel into Mexico is to know that if someone should breakdown( engine malfunction or flat tire) that there would be services provided to assist the RVer in Mexico. I talk to many who say, What do I do if I need a tow? I know that GoodSams and Coachnet(I think) state that they will respond in Mexico, but I have heard that some have had problems. JMO

RE: Lousy AT&T/ iPhone Coverage?

Jeff
I have that application on my iphone and tried to use it because in my home I have no reception. It would not work, because I do not have reception. Go figure, its purpose. I guess it is just for dropped calls.
supposedly you can mark the spot by moving the marker to where you didn't have service .. You can do this when you do have service.
Yes but the point is if you have no reception in an area, it is supposed to notify AT&T of the GPS coordinate so that they can correct the problem in that area.
If there is reception, then there is no problem in that GPS coordinate area.I was just looking at the app online and it looks like you record the event as it occurs and then hit submit. As I read it you will get a confirmation after they actually receive the information - that is, when your phone gets back onto the network and actually sends the message. It is essentially a store-and-forward system - just like email.
Dave
Dave,
When I used it said that it could not process. I certainly hope you are right. Because I know that when I contacted them directly to explain the problem, no promises were made to rectify the reception issue. It is interesting how Verizon has no problem with service in my area.

"Maybe it's just to try and convince you that someone cares? "
I think you might be right. I have e-mailed them regarding my concerns in the area that I live and the lack of service coverage and nothing is ever done about it.
Also my son who has Verizon has reception in my home and area. I have notified AT&T that as soon as my contract is up (not til 8/2011), if reception has not improved, I intend on switching to Verizon. Hopefully by then some major changes will be made.

RE: Guns in Mexico

This poster states that he recognizes that firearms are prohibited in Mexico. He wants to know what kind of alternative protection is recommended. There is no adequate protection if you are faced with the barrel of a gun. Maybe others can post what they carry for emergencies. Bat/baton, pepper spray, tazer(maybe illegal in Mexico, I do not know).

RE: Emergency Roadside Service

Actually we were grateful to have had Good Sams, because AAA just left us to fen for ourselves. Good Sams did take 2 hrs to arrive and we are also taking into consideration that is was the day before a holiday. It was concerning when we initially called and were placed on hold for 15 minutes before we could explain our emergency. Just want to know if there is better roadside assistance out there and your opinions on the subject.
Thank You for your responses

Emergency Roadside Service

Yesterday we encountered a situation of waiting for some emergency road assistance for 5 1/2 hours on Hwy 12 in California(called Blood Alley)as we had a blow out. It was an inside tire back tire. The amount of time (5 1/2 hours)although frustrating was only part of the issue. We have two ERS providers that we pay for, one is AAA (200 miles) and the other is Good Sams. We first called AAA letting them know that we have a 36ft motorhome. They sent someone out and his jack was not adequate to raise the motorhome to change the tire. So they told us we needed a commercial tow vehicle and therefore could NOT help us.
Thankfully, we had Good Sam as the other option and called them (after waiting on hold to speak to a dispatcher for 15 minutes). We explained the problem and after 2 more hours they sent a guy in a regular pickup to change the tire. He had a high powered jack and taped up some wires that were hanging down that the steel belt on the tire had severed and changed the tire. Obviously a commercial Tow was not necessary , just the right jack and tools.
Now my question, what is the best roadside service to have? AAA, literally left us and said your on your own and Good Sam who finally came out to change the tire after a total time of being on the side of the road for 5 1/2 hours unitl 10:30 @ night. The tire blew out @ 4:30pm and we were 1.5 miles from our destination.
I have heard some good things about coachnet, what are some of your opinions here. Thanks you in advance for your advice.

RE: Personal safety while boondocking

".. cell phone reception is non existant where we camp"
Deputy Chief P.O.,
(unless you have satellite phones - the ultimate) In addition to personal safety emergencies .... no cell phone service at remote camping locations could present a much worse danger - a medical emergency. ..... Or mechancial breakdowns out in the middle of nowhere, too
Have you ever considered for your motorhome a roof top cellular antenna direct wired to an inside cell phone transceiver ("amplifier/enhanced receiver") with the transceiver then direct wired to the external antenna connector on your cell phone(s)?
We have this setup in our Class C MH and it works as advertised. Both our cell phone and cellular Internet access are greatly improved - at way less cost than a satellite phone. We used this on an extended 9000 mile trip this summer and found it very rare to not have our cell phones connect and Internet access in all sorts of situations and locations.
Actually I just ordered a "Wilson Electronics iBooster Cellular Amplifier Cradle Kit with Mini Magnet for iPhones"and should get it this week. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0023RRCPY
I am looking forward to seeing if this will provide us with cell phone reception where we boondock. Is this similar to what you suggest? What model or specific amplifier did you purchase for your rig?

RE: Personal safety while boondocking

I prefer that the people who are uncomfortable with firearm possession, NOT PACK. I also respect their decision and reasons for not doing so.
I can tell you that we boondock on BLM land and the Forest Rangers do not carry firearms pursuant to their policies. They stop @ our campsite to visit, and they know that we are retired and current LEOs in possession of firearms. They specifically stated to us that they know who to be calling for backup assistance in an emergency, US. Certainly we would help in an emergency, but we do not pack to provide Rangers assistance and would prefer not to get involved in their jurisdiction off duty.
We saw this year on the Fourth of July the Rangers drive by our campsite with a couple of Sheriff's patrol Units for back up assistance as they were responding to a call at another campsite.
Incidents do occur and cell phone reception is non existant where we camp. My point in telling this story is that I am sure if an incident should occur when the need for firearm protection is necessary, those that do not carry may be grateful for camping neighbors that do.
I like the comment that the dirt engineer made, "I wear my seatbelt even though most drive without getting in an accident, too."

RE: Personal safety while boondocking

Groover, your comment,I heard of an interesting, legal and inexpensive option recently. Carry a can of wasp spray. Most have a range of over 20 ft and it would probably run off most wildlife and humans if sprayed in the face. I feel sure that a good spray in the face would take the fight out of me and mess up my aim with a weapon. Since it is legal everywhere you could keep it closer at hand. A firearm won't do any good if it is not with you when you need it. Also, virtually any family member could use it, not just trained and practiced individuals.
This option certainly is better than nothing.
However, in my experience, pepper spray on some humans doesn't always work. I have seen people that have been sprayed, not affected (certainly not the norm). Beware of spraying dogs with pepper spray unless there are no other options, I have witnessed it not work on dogs. I never tried pepper spray on a bear, but if it failed to work on a dog, God forbid should you spray a bear with it.
I do not have any experience with Wasp spray and am interested in it's chemical makeup, if you have any information on this, I would appreciate it. But please remember even wasp spray will not stop another gun.
