RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

I hope everyone had a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving. Sue and I along with the fur gang had a great time at Camp Dixie. The nights were cold but the day time was nice. We lost our heat Friday afternoon so it was kind of cool inside the camper. The generator would only pull the electric heater in low heat so it had a hard time keeping up, but it was 65* inside the camper this morning so that wasn’t too bad compared to 32* outside.
Monday we start on the walk leading to the Old Fella Memorial statue and most likely will be finished by Wednesday. What a great year this has been for the Old Fella organization and myself. Soon there will be a new RVer of the Year and I hope they will be as excited as I was at being named to such an honor. The Good Sam Club is really a great organization with a great staff to boot. I think Sue Bray is top of the line with a great personality to go along with it. I look forward to meeting the new winner and seeing the Good Sam people again in Louisville next summer.
Okay I have to unload the truck and the camper so I will go for now and talk with you later.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good morning everyone. Well it is still very over cast here in the Deep South, but it is supposed to clear today and Thanksgiving Day is to be clear with lots of sunshine. Wednesday we are leaving for Camp Dixie with the fur gang to enjoy the day with Joshua our oldest grandchild. He is staying behind while his family goes to North Carolina to visit kin folks, so we will be able to keep an eye on him. He has his first job at Cracker Barrel Restaurant so he isn’t able to travel.
I have been watching the Christmas stories on television and it sure gets you in the mood for the season. Mama, Hobo, Peaches, Suzie and Izzie haven’t gotten their Christmas list together yet, but I am sure it will be coming soon. Yesterday Hobo and Suzie spent s a lot time outside even though it was raining enjoying chasing the squirrels. Hobo just loves this cooler weather we have been having the last few days and wants to sit under the large Pecan tree waiting for a squirrel to drop out of it into her mouth. Honestly, she will sit for hours staring up into the branches of the tree just waiting for something to happen. Suzie will stay for a little while but soon loses interest and moves on to something else. Mama and Peaches are fair weather fur babies and don’t like the outside when it is wet and raining. They had rather curl up in their beds and sleep the day away.
I have a lot of things to do today so I had better get started, talk with you later.

When we adopted her she was a little shy, but Bella (we kept the name) has been rapidly gaining confidence and has become an outgoing, playful puppy. It seems like she gained two inches in the first three days just by standing up straight! In the two weeks since then, Bella has gained six pounds, and gets longer every time you look at her.
She is great around children and other dogs, and gets petted by all the children in the playground. Our daughter loves to run and play with her in the yard, and then sit with her on the couch and scratch behind Bella's ears.
Bella is a great walker, and can make seven miles a day. She is also starting to show her lab heritage, as she loves water in all forms, whether splashing through a puddle or a stream, or romping on the beach.
Thank you again for rescuing her and all the other dogs; hopefully seeing the wonderful dog Bella has become is some small reward.
Sincerely,
Eric, Stefanie and Leah

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good morning everyone. I hope many of you subscribe to the Old Fella news letter because there is a story in it about Bella.
HAPPY TAIL: BELLA
Bella was rescued and cared for by the incredible Shanks Family . Bella's new family in Massachusetts recently wrote Old Fella to let us know how happy they are with their new puppy. They have also shared with us some extraordinary photos of Bella in her new life.
SEE MORE PHOTOS OF BELLA
Maybe I can post the story along with the pictures later on, but it is very heart warming story about a rescue who found a wonderful home.
Here's wishing everyone a blessed day.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good morning everyone, its another beaqutiful morning here in the Deep South. The spring like weather continues to visit us well into the cold season. I don't remember warm weather like this into Thanksgiving.
Yesterday I took Mama with me to Augusta to pick up the camper after having repairs made to the antenna system for the TV. It turned out to be a major deal as cables had to be replaced and rerouted to get rid of a short that disrupted the whole sustem. But now we have a very clear signal and the added DVD and VCR now plays through the sound system, which is nice. Mama was like my shadow yesterday as she followed me everywhere I went. It didn't matter where I was in the house, she was there and if I went outside she would whine and bark until Sue let her outside with me. Last night she wanted on the couch with me, but once again Peaches and Izzie were already there, so this time she settled for the floor next to my feet.
Peaches has been throwing up for the last two nights, she vomits grass she has eaten and nothing else? Hobo, Mama, Suzie and Izzie are all doing well and looking forward to the Holidays. We are still trying to figure out where we are going for Thanksgiving, maybe Camp Dixie?
The eye continues to improve with the vision becoming clearer every day. I pray that the vision will improve to the point that I can read once again with the left eye.
Okay I have to go for now, Dan good luck with the therapy and contined healinig process.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

That start date for the memorial walk Way is the first Monday after Thanksgiving. It should be finished in three or four days after the start date. I am looking forward to seeing it completed and just as soon as it is done I will take pictures and post them to the thread.
The eye continues to improve but the bubble that is inside the eye makes it look like I am looking through Jell-o as it giggles about.
All of the fur gang is doing well as they wait for me to get ready for their morning walk about town. Last night Peaches was first up on the couch and then Izzie, so Mama waited patiently until they moved and then she made her move pushing herself into my lap. There was much complaining when Peaches got back from the kitchen. She began to bark at mama talking to her in dog talk, but it didn't matter to Mama, she was there and wasn't going to move. Izzie, who had been pushed aside still clung to an area of my lap and was not going to give an inch. Finally all settled down and there we were for the rest of the evening.
Okay I have to go for now. Everyone have a blessed day and I will talk with you later.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good morning everyone. This morning Mama and I went for a walk while the others stayed behind. Sue couldn't go this morning so it was just Mama and me. We will take the others for a walk later on in the day. This afternoon I will meet with Barry and we will start the planning for the walkway. I hope to break ground oni it tomorrow.
The eye is really better this morning with more vision than I have had in three years. What I thought was a set back was just a natural progression in the order of things. The Old Fella Organization was on ABC Channel six Sunday and Monday bringing attention to the voting for the Rachael Ray Mutt Madness contest. I hope everyone votes for us in this final round so we can get the $50,000 prize money.
I talked with Dan Yesterday and he is mending well with Lori's help. I can't get over this warm weather. It is still slike spring here with day time temps in the 70's. We haven't had any frost at all so far. Maybe we need to go camping some where while the weather is so nice. I hope all is well with everyone and you enjoy your day and I will talk with you later.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

The doctor gave me a good report. He said the reason the vision darkened was because the bubble in the front of the eye desolved, which it was supposed to do. The bubble was capturing light and sending it to the retina which made things brighter. He said everything looked great and I was heading for a complete recovery. Now there is another bubble inside of the eye that needs to desolve for me to have good vision and in time it will also go away.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Today has been a day of doubt about the eye as it began to lose sight yesterday and has continued to do so as the hours have gone by. I still have vision, but not as sharp as before as it seems less light is reaching the back of the eye making all look dim. I go to the doctor tomorrow, maybe he can come up with something as to why this is happening.
The last time this happened it was the oil that became cloudy blocking light from coming in. Anyway I hope it is just something that is temporary as the eye heals. Mama and the rest of the fur gang are doing well enjoying the nice sunny weather we were blessed with today. I watched them today as they lay in the sun sleeping and perhaps dreaming about Thanksgiving dinner that is just around the corner.
This Christmas will be special as we look forward to family and friends and remember those who have gone on before us. We will miss Levi, Charlie and Old Fella but will remember them with their Christmas ornaments on the tree. Old Fella is making the local news tonight as he climbs in the Rachael Ray Mutt Madness. They filmed the statue in the city park this afternoon and will tell of the organization’s contributions to the community. The walkway will be finished this week I hope so I will post pictures of it when it is done. Okay I am going to call it a night, talk with you tomorrow.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good morning everyone, it’s a beautiful morning here in the Deep South, sunshine, blue sky and not too cool outside. The fur gang is doing well and ready to face another day. Mama, Hobo, Suzie, Peaches and Izzie are all very happy and content. This morning as I walked into the kitchen Izzie was in Sue’s lap getting his morning soothing massage. He will allow Sue to touch his tummy but no one else can without some objection and perhaps a slap from his paw. Anyway he was getting his morning attention and he was in hog heaven.
I have been feeding Hobo separately to keep her from eating the other girl's food. I have watched her tactics in that she will stand close to the feeding bowl waiting for her chance to step in and finish off what is left. This encourages Peaches to clean her bowl and Suzie will stand guard over hers until she gets tired and walks away and then she is dumb founded that her food is gone when she returs. Mama will allow Hobo to come and eat out of the bowl with her making sure she gets her share just like a mother would do for a child that is hungry. Since I have been feeding Hobo in a different room I am beginning to see her lose some weight.
The eye continues to improve as the vision becomes clearer and I am able to see objects that are close up. With the bubble in the eye it is like looking through jiggling Jell-O. But anyway I can see and that is great! The blood pressure is still a little elevated along with the blood sugar so an increase in the blood pressure pill was in order along with a little change in the amount of insulin I take. The Doctor wasn’t too alarmed about the situation because of the eye surgery and the healing process that is on going.
Dan is supposed to come home today from the hospital with his new hip. I hope he does well once he arrives at home and can relax in his own surroundings. Okay, Sue has plans for me this morning so I have to go and face the music, talk with you later.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Joel I am glad to hear your surgery was successful, sorry you had to go through it. The vision in my left eye has come back and will return to normal vision by 6-8 weeks, that according to the doctor. I thank God that I can see once again and will be able to judge distances and tell when there is a step down in the sidewalk.
Mama has been so attentive lately, making sure I am okay. She seemed more concern about the bandage over the eye than anyone else. She sensed something was wrong and began her vigil over me. Yes the dogs really are special and show their love and concern in many ways.

Good morning everyone. This morning I am dealing with elevated blood sugar and blood pressure, which is out of control. I don’t know what is wrong but I will see the doctor sometime today. I met with the City yesterday and work on the Memorial Walkway will begin next week. Right now I am so exhausted I want to go back to bed, but I know better than to do that. I will keep you posted as to what is going on later today.
Prayers for Dan and Lori in that they get to go home very soon.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

There is so much going on right now I don't know where to begin. Sue's business is taking a life of its own and it is looking as if she is going to be very busy for a while. I guess I will be the step and fetch it guy, but that's okay.
Last night Mama let me know I wasn’t giving her enough attention. She had been acting kind of funny all day and last night she wanted to be close to me. I was sitting on the couch with Izzie and Peaches when Peaches decided she wanted to go outside. So I let Peaches, Hobo and Suzie out, but Mama stayed behind. When I approached the couch Mama came running and climbed on the couch and waited for me to sit down, she then crawled up and put her head in my lap, let out a long deep sigh and immediately went to sleep.
I began to think about Christmas this year as were celebrate the birth of Christ and thought that this will be Mama and Hobo’s first Christmas with us. I began to think about decorating the house and putting up a tree and the special ornaments we have saved with Fella, Levi and Charlie’s memories attached to them. Life is so short when you really stop to think about it. Both of my parents as well as my brother are gone, but what wonderful memories I have of them.
Last night I was thinking about my Grandmother and her making dresses for the grandchildren. She would go the general store where they sold all kinds of feed and seed for farming and she would carefully pick each bag with different designs on them. She would take the bags home and when the chicken feed was emptied out of them she would take the cloth bag and make a dress out of it for the girls and herself. I remember her sitting at a table for hours cutting patterns and sewing the cloth together with her old Singer Sewing machine driven by a foot pedal. Granny had a dog, I can’t remember his name, but he was such a part of the family. The dog was really one of the children’s, but you know how that goes, Granny did all of the feeding and taking care of it. So many memories packed into such a short life time, yet so rich and meaningful. Old Fella will always live in our hearts and his gift to us was the fact that he loved so much his second chance at life. Love goes a long way toward making life meaningful for those around us, what we share and give just by being a part of people’s lives.
There will be changes in the next few months that will touch those around us, I just hope that when these changes come Old Fella’s legacy will continue to be a big part of this community. Mine and Sue’s health is playing a big part in this decision that is coming about, I just hope that it will bring family closer together. I have to go for now, talk with you later.
