RE: 12 volt RV batteries dead. How to start generator?

Don't know what type of RV you are driving......but....
If you are in a motorhome with an 'emergency start' buatton,
on the dash, hold it in while starting the generator
If you don't have this, get some jumper cables ( a neighbor
will have them) and connect the POSITIVE post on the good
battery to the POSITIVE post on the dead battery. Then connect
the NEGATIVE post on the good battery to the NEGATIVE post on
the dead battery......(sometimes they explode, so shield your
face/eyes)........when connected, start the generator, then
remove the jumper cables, usually positive first for extra
safety.

RE: 30 amp power cord melted

There may be some confusion here. One question was
about using 250 volt connectors.......he may be referring
to the MAXIMUM VOLTAGE RATING of the connectors....that is,
safe for use UP THROUGH 250 VOLTS (A C). He may NOT be
referring to the pin arrangement. IF he refers to the
maximum voltage rating, the equipment is safe to use, and
is what is normally available.

RE: 30 amp power cord melted

Someone wanted examples of dangerous electrical information on this site
1. Several submitters suggest connecting the R V generator output
to the house wiring. This can backfeed the power lines and
kill a lineman. This happened recently in Alabama to a
lineman helping with storm recovery in the area, which was
unfamiliar to him. Some said the lineman should have been
more careful.....maybe......but, that doesn't change the fact
that this is a DANGEROUS practice
2. Someone suggested connecting TWO 15 (or 20, he didn't know)
circuits to the main panel of an RV, from TWO DIFFERENT HOUSES.
He had no idea that the neutral currents might
NOT divide equally, overloading one of
the UNPROTECTED neutrals
3. Someone suggested, since he did not have a ground wire
(only a hot and neutral) from his house to his RV, driving
a ground stake at the RV, not understanding that the ground
resistance return to the house ground could be high, causing
a dangerous R V to ground potential.
Enough?

I did NOT say 'don't listen to advice on this forum"
I said SOME of it is dangerous, and suggested people
'be careful'
READ before quoting..............my advice STANDS,
supported by your posting.

RE: 30 amp power cord melted

Be careful about electrical advice from this site.
Some of it is DANGEROUS.
A LONG extension cord will cause voltage drop,......this
will cause the MOTOR loads in the R V to draw MORE current.
This can damage them..(Air conditioner compressor, etc)
Resistance loads (light bulbs, toasters, etc) will burn less brightly
or heat less, but will not be damaged.
You say your cord was damaged AT the connection.....this is
a sign of a poor electrical connection..... a high resistance
connection, which creates heat...... a LOOSE connection.....
Get new extension cord, or replace the connectors as required,
and be sure they are TIGHT connections.....then get a $5 voltmeter
and plug it into a receptacle INSIDE the R V, and watch it
as you add voltage......if the voltage drops below about 108
volts, reduce the load.....turn something OFF.....
IF you do this and keep watch on the connectors, you will probably
be fine.

RE: Common spelling issues

My favorite on this site is the misspelling
of 'refrigerator' as 'refridgerator'..........
that 'd' frequently slips in there.....
maybe from 'fridge'?

RE: Stove Heat

I suggest something that REFLECTS heat,
not plexiglass.........something silver,
or white. Consider something temporary,
like a sheet of aluminum, which can be
placed horizontally on the stove, out of
the way, when not in use.

RE: A/C pump keeps gpoing offand on?

If you mean the a/c COMPRESSOR, it is
doing what is called 'short cycling'.
This will destroy/burn up the compressor.
Don't let that continue. Have a service
center check it NOW.

RE: Gulf Shores Alabama

Pitapony will have later, and probably better information
, but here's my opinion.....read it ALL before
deciding.....
Southport is a second rate campground. It is almost under the
high rise bridge over the intracoastal coming into Gulf Shores.
The traffic noise is NOT noticeable. It is on the intracoastal
and it's fun to watch the notsooften barges pass. About 7 miles
to the beach on U S 59. I LIKE Southport, in spite of what I just
wrote. I would try to get a spot ON the intracoastal. There is
little spacing between sites, and no screening vegetaion. You
can walk to LULU's restaruant other side of the bridge..Jimmy
Buffett's sister, good place, not fancy.
U S 43 is four lane south of Thomasville.........two lane from
there to Tuscaloosa, but not much traffic and NO hills big enough
to bother anyone. Don't know about north of Tuscaloosa.
If you use I 65, consider, at Greenville, Sherling Lake Park,
a county run park about 3 miles west of I 65...VERY pretty
place.....nothing there for entertainment except a fine golf
course, but a good stopover. WalMart, etc at the exit from I 65.

RE: Gulf Shores Alabama

Foosh wanted this posted, although it has previouly
been posted.
Gulf Shores AL is a FINE tourist area, with MANY
good campgrounds and restaurants, shopping facilities,
and miles of great beaches. The area starts
about 7 miles inland, at Foley. A snowbird favorite campground
is Anchors Aweigh (has web site), very close to a large
'outlet center' which the women LOVE...and to Lambert's
restaurant, 'home of the throwed rolls' (yes, they DO).
This is a large new campground.....no shade,
. There are other campgrounds and restaurants in the
town and area....try rvparkreviews.com at Foley Alabama
South on highway 59, cross a high bridge over the intra-
coastal canal. My favorite campground IN Gulf Shores is Luxury
RV, an easy 2 short block walk from the beach.pool ...no shade,
concrete, a few palms and pines....has a web site. Great
restaurants in walking distance...Oyster House.......back at
the high rise bridge is LuLu's (sister of Jimmy Buffett), a
fine restaurant.....all these are NOT fancy dress up places.
Gulf State Park campground is a few miles east, and is about
a mile inland....usually booked up, but allows drive ups.
Call and discuss it.
A fun trip is to drive about 15 miles to Mobile Bay and ride
the ferry across and back, as a walk-on or in a vehicle.
About 20 minutes each way...windy, and may be cool on deck.
The 'other end' is on Dauphin Island.......has a web site,
and a campground.
Highways are 4 lane, and get busy on weekends. Crime is
minimal. Nice people.
A drive east on the beach, across Perdido Pass high rise
bridge takes you to the FloraBama, a FAMOUS beach bar,
which looks as if it will fall over any minute. You will
pass hundreds of condos on the beach, many 20 or more stories.

RE: Spare tire blew up

You are not alone. I had a spare,
attached to the REAR of the motorhome,
explode.........tore the cover off.
Had never been on the ground but was
maybe 5 years old.

RE: Running generator & A/C while driving

I agree with the previous replies.
The only problem I can think of
is this.....most generators have
a 'low oil' sensor, and if you
turn the corner too fast, the
oil 'sloshes' and the generator
stops. It can quickly restarted.

RE: Running A/C

Probably...........it depends on
1. The size (current required) of the A/C
2. The voltage to the A/C (long small supply
cords DEcrease the voltage and INcrease the
current)
So..........try it......but don't turn on anything else!
Most R V's can do it

RE: Missing thermostat (Ford 460)

I have no argument with the responses, but
..............years ago I had a BOAT engine
overheating.......I threw the thermostat
overboard, and all was fine after that.
Never could understand why a boat engine
HAD a thermostat, unless it was to allow
more efficient operation...and, on a
Greymarine straight six, who cared?

RE: Hooking up at home

Be SURE you know what you are doing !
If you plug into 220 volts with a
110 volt R V........you LOSE $$$$$$$.
All the smoke comes out of your
equipment.
Get someone who UNDERSTANDS it to
check it out.
