RE: Why so few GM class C's?

I love Chevy vs. Ford debates... it always brings out the most intelligent conversations : )

RE: Allison 1000 Tranny Stuck in 3rd after bump!!!

Update: The Chevy dealer sent the TCU out to be re-programmed. Hopefully I can pick up the MH on Friday.

RE: Allison 1000 Tranny Stuck in 3rd after bump!!!

So the shop called today, and good news... the Chevy dealer found the problem. They said the TCU shorted and had to be reprogrammed. I find that interesting because I believe that was the same unit they sent to the Allison facility to be tested last week. The Allison facility supposedly tested it and said it was functioning properly. I guess i'll have to wait and see when I pick up the RV.

RE: Allison 1000 Tranny Stuck in 3rd after bump!!!

Update: The shop is throwing in the towel and taking the coach to a Chevy medium duty truck dealer on Monday. I guess they are thinking the issue is on the "truck" side of the RV. We'll see what they have to say.

RE: Allison 1000 Tranny Stuck in 3rd after bump!!!

Latest Update: I spoke to the tech yesterday (Thu), he said they got everything put back together and took it for a test drive. Actually, the owner of the shop drove it. The good news is the "check transmission" light is off... The bad news is the "check engine" light is on and giving "alternator" and "voltage" error codes. ???

RE: What did you do to your Toy Hauler today???

Didn't actually do anything to a TH, but did see plenty of them out at Pismo Beach!

RE: What did you do to your Class C MH today???

Laying here in the RV typing this post on my Blackberry. We're spending the night at the Laguna Seca campground. In the morning,we're taking the coach over to an Allison repair facility in hopes thay can figure out what is causing the "check transmission" light to come on and resulted in the tranny to default into 3rd gear. Wish us luck! Had that happen on my 06 Ram, ended up being the input speed control sensor. Cost me about $150 to repair, new sensor fluid and filter. Thanks for the info. Here's the thread on my situation: Allison Transmission stuck in 3rd!

RE: Allison 1000 Tranny Stuck in 3rd after bump!!!

Latest Update: It's Thursday now, 3 days after we dropped off the MH and it's still at the shop. The family and I came home in the Toad on Tuesday night (thank goodness for a toad). Anyways, the shop spent a day and a half trying to diagnose why they could not get multiple laptops to communicate with the transmission. Eventually they pulled the TCM and sent it to a specialized Allison facility in the Bay Area to have it tested. Unfortunately it tested out ok. So back to square one. At least we're home and not "camping" in front of the shop.

RE: Allison 1000 Tranny Stuck in 3rd after bump!!!

So after 8 hours at the shop, they could not pull the code from the transmission. They were having difficulty with communications between the TCM and the tranny. The tech said he pulled the TCM out of my engine bay and installed it in a school bus they had in the shop... No problem. But when he took the bus one and put it in my RV, no luck! So here we are spending the night in front of the shop. : ( We'll try again tomorrow.

RE: Allison 1000 Tranny Stuck in 3rd after bump!!!

Well we're here at a shop and having the tranny looked at. These guys at the shop are real pros. Looks like they specialize in commercial heavy duty applications, so they should be able to handle our 18K lb. MH. The tech is pulling the code as we speak. I'll keep you guys updated.

RE: Allison 1000 Tranny Stuck in 3rd after bump!!!

An OBDII scanner can't pull codes out of the TCM, but I would see if I could get my hands on one to see if there are any codes set that are tranny related, especially any TCM related loss of connection codes. Does the truck go into reverse? If so, I ran across this one time, no guarantee it is the same thing, had reverse and 3rd only, it was the NBSU, which you can get from an Allison or GM Dealer for 75 bucks or less, but on the 06 and later Allison's they are internal to the tranny, but can be replaced roadside. Could also be a sticking valve which you would need to drop the pan to get to, and most of the time a little fine grit sandpaper to remove any burs will fix it, but I am not sure I would want to drop the pan without having all my tools handy. Is there a programmer on the truck? Thanks for the info. I still have Park, Neutral, Reverse and 3rd (as you all know!) Replacing the NBSU and dropping the pan are definitely out of my league. We did locate a couple of the repair centers Allison recommended. Unfortunately being away from home, I have no idea how good they are. One of them is a Ford dealer, how do you think they'll feel about working on my Chevy Kodiak chassis? : ) Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

RE: Allison 1000 Tranny Stuck in 3rd after bump!!!

When this happened to me on a previous motorhome, it meant a transmission rebuild. Really??? Did your MH just stop moving because of a mechanical failure in the transmission?

I tried disconnecting the negative terminal on the chassis battery, but no luck. The "check transmission" light is still on. : (

RE: Allison 1000 Tranny Stuck in 3rd after bump!!!

Hi All, I have a Jayco Greyhawk built on the Chevy Kodiak chassis, it has an Allison 1000 transmission. We were pulling into a dirt parking lot and there was a small lip on from the pavement to the dirt. It wasn't any bigger than a speed bump. Anyways, when we went to park, the "check transmission" light went on and now the tranny is stuck in it's default mode of 3rd gear. After speaking with Allison, they recommended we have it towed to an authorized Allison transmission shop. Unfortunately, the closest one is about 45 miles away. I did crawl underneath to take a look around and everything looks good: all connectors are connected, shift lever is operating properly, no tranny oil leaking, and I check the fuse in the coach. Any suggestions??? After letting it set for 3-4 minutes with the ignition off, if it will run normal, drive it to the nearest dealer or if you have a Shucks,Checkers or Chief parts store close take it to them for a free code reading. I did try letting it sit with the ignition off, but no luck. When I was on the phone with the Allison Tech Center, they said you could not pull the code using a standard OBD-II scanner. He said there is one specific to the transmissions called an Allison DOC. Is this incorrect?

RE: Allison 1000 Tranny Stuck in 3rd after bump!!!

An electrical connection inside or outside came loose sounds possible for sure. Have your removed the chassis neg battery cable long enough to reboot the computer? I have not tried removing the negative cable from the battery. I will give that a go. Thanks.
