RE: Northwest Spring Rally, May 14-16, 2010

Bigdog, Here's a spot in Redding that we stopped at on one of trips south. It's just east of Redding about 8-10 miles off of I-5. It's Bear Mt. RV Resort & Campground and its in the foothills with trees and creek. Still one of the more picturesque spots we have stayed in. Its a Passport America park, so if you have that, you save half. Its not listed in the TL Directory though. BTW, the sun finally came out for about an hour at 2, but it still hit mid to high 70's!! Have a great trip.

RE: Class A suggestions for a 2010 Fulltimer to be?

Marge, Use all of the resources of the net to track down units in your size and price range. I would say that there is no way to find a selection up there!! Not sure what your situation is, but here is something you may want to do. If your retiring, you may want to hold off on committing to a purchase until then. You may want to block out some travel time to come down to the "lower 48" and look in person. Have a list of models and just track them down. When we got serious looking for our rig, I already had a years back issues of RV Trader and made the I-5 run from Bellingham to Eugene OR. about every 3-4 weeks. You probably can't do that, but maybe take 4 or 5 days every 6-9 weeks and fly down. I'm being parachoial here, but my understanding is that the northwest has the reputation of having very clean used rigs to select from. Of course, they are priced higher than So. CA or Arizona. Also remember, there are more sellers out there than there are buyers, especially now! Good luck

RE: new purchase

We have a 33' Winnibago with a super slide and find that it fits our needs very well even with our 2 terriers. My impression when we were looking for our unit is that its not the length that gives you the room, its the number of slideouts that gives you the space. Several things dictated the length. 1. Our driveway at home was only 34' long!! 2. We wanted to utilize national and state parks as much as possible, and anything over 35' you are limited in sites in those parks. The same holds true for number of slides - the more you have the more limited you are. If your not interested in state and national parks, no big deal then. As already mentioned, pay attention to the ccc - cargo carrying capacity. This is the amount of "stuff" you can load onboard after all fuel, liquids and 4 people are onboard. VERY important for fulltiming, as you will end up with lots of stuff you think you need. Tell wife that when your retired and traveling, clothes and styling becomes less important!! The only things we attempt to keep a good supply of is socks and underwear!! Once you have the clothes you think you need, take off half of that and you will still have more than enough!! We travel 8-9 months, then summer back in the northwest, have the house leased out, so I guess that makes us full timers! Good luck

RE: Lokoking for route and stop/activity suggestions

I think we are being spoofed again! I vaguely remember a very similar posting about a year ago with a very similar question starting at the tar pits with no car and then heading east. They must be getting bored with all of the reruns on this week and have nothing better to do!:B I think he's trying to pull our collective chains!

RE: Heading to RGV after Christmas from Michigan

Well, we just got into the RGV area-Mission right now- yesterday and the temps haven't hit nearly as high as the forecast said they would! It can only get better!! Can't help you with places to stay on your way down. I would say to just keep driving south as long and as far each as you feel awake then just Walmart it. As I was surfing the net for some places to stay down here I found this, that you may want to check out. Sunrvresorts.com has 3 parks down here in the area. (Sorry, I don't know how to the hotlink, clicky thing!) Alamo - Casa del Valle; LaFeria - Kenwood; and Weslaco - Snow to Sun. They are running a first timers special thrugh April- week @ $89; month @ $189. Haven't seen them, but may drive by one of them in the next several days. Good luck

RE: Northwest Spring Rally, May 14-16, 2010

What's going on with those Seahawks? They have the game on down here since its a Texas team they are playing. Down 17 - 0 halfway through the first quarter! They don't even look competitive! I saw that they fired the GM but goodness, this is embarassing. Foggy this morning, but very pleasant this afternoon. Not quite shorts and t-shirt weather, but better than what you guys are suffering through! Take care.

RE: Trying to decide to go to the valley or not>>>>>>>>

Well, we just got down into Mission today and sure hope the weather clears up. This is our first time into the valley and the better half is already talking about heading back to the southwest if things don't get warmer!! Yes, its better than up north and the northwest where the kids are really getting cold. I sure hope the weather forecasters are better at predicting the warmer temperatures than the ones up in San Antonio are!!

RE: 83 from Mission to Laredo. Then I35 north.

We just made that drive down today. We have a 33' Class A towing a Saturn. No problem. Several places with 4 lanes. Easy drive. Enjoy We also took 35 out of San Antonio. Mostly 4 lanes and again, no problem.

RE: Northwest Spring Rally, May 14-16, 2010

Sorry to hear about the cold weather back home. We have been complaining about how "cold" it is down here! Mid 20's a couple of nights and days in mid to upper 40's with wind and rain. Left San Antonio Thursday and we are now down in Mission in the Rio Grande Valley area. Actually quite pleasant today. Take care

RE: Montana places to see?

Let me add Bannock State Park and ghost town. This is right in the middle of wild west history. Bannock was the birthplace of the Montana vigilante movement and former territorial capital - by their claims! The ghost town has been left in its historical condition with no tourist trap t-shirt shops allowed to set up! The state park is along side the creek where gold was discovered that led to the development of Bannick. However, the state park does not have any hookups whatsoever, but it is a beautiful spot.

RE: Passport America

Use them as we travel whenever their in the area we are traveling through or to. You do have to read the individual campgrounds restrictions very carefully. Just like anything else, it is well worth it if you use it!!

RE: Gifts for the RVer?

We like the basic Visa gift cards that we can use anyplace. We enjoy using them to go out to dinner!

RE: Forest Service 50% off for Old Folks May Be Abolished

"Senior Citizens" aren't 65 any more, they're 90. FDR picked 65 as the retirement age because at that time most people were dead by age 63. People who turn 65 this year have an odds-on chance of living into their 90's in good health. Thanks mostly to the same U.S. healthcare system everybody says is "broken". Yet at the same time, the AARP (a FOR-PROFIT insurance company) has been pushing the definition of "senior citizen" from 65 down to 50. There are senior citizens on this forum who are wind surfing, mountain biking, hang gliding, mountain climbing, extreme skiing, etc, etc, etc. Those of us in good health should be grateful for it, yes, but it is no longer the exception, just because of age. Is everybody healthy? Is everybody happy? No, but age has a lot less to do with it that when FDR invented "retirement", which was merely a scheme to get older workers out of the factories and give scarce jobs to young men who were out of work and listening to the communists on the street corner. I notice now that respect for age is being linked to respect for service. But that's not what the law says. The law says that if you turn 65 you get something that younger people don't, regardless of service or need. Others are talking about a "contractual obligation". Well, very soon the contry of Italy is going to have 1 contractual obligation for every 3 workers. That means 1/3 of every paycheck will get handed over to someone who feels they've "earned it" by just standing there. Sandi (mod), sorry to try your patience. Aw yes, you must be getting closer to 65!!:B I know that 70 doesn't sound as old as it did 20 years ago!! I agree that 65 was probably an arbitraryly age pulled out of the hand, very much like the "8 glasses of water a day" was! I propose giving young families a discount - the more kids they have, the bigger the discount in the campground!! That will keep some of us old foggies out of there! I would STILL like to know if the concessonaires have to put any money back into the improvement of the campgrounds. I would accept the full price if that was assured. Why not a sliding scale for every 5 years after 65 starting at 10% and increasing 5% for every 5 years after that! Now you guys really have me trying to figure out why we should have any discount!!:h:?:@

Better living through chemistry!!:B Glad to hear it wasn't more serious. I think you guys need to head south in Oct. from now on!! Both of you are too accident prone during Dec.!!:B

Bob, Sorry to hear about your tumble. Nothing serious I hope. No broken bones? Stiff & sore? It sure takes this old body longer to recuperate from a fall or getting bounced around! Take care

The Fountain at Penitas RV Park, Penitas TX - RGV

Hope this is the best place to post this! Heading for RGV from San Antonio this next week sometime. Was looking through our Passport Am. book and found this place - has a R/C track! I can't find anything on the web about it. Is there anyone out there that has stayed at this park or seen it? It so, what are your impressions? Couldn't find any reviews on it online either! Thanks

Wow, the final score I got off the net was Huskies 42 - Cal 10!! Looks like the dogs are on their way back!:B Now, I hope the Husky BBers live up to all of the national hype I've been ready about them! BTW - it hit 25 degrees last night!! Suppose to be back in the 60 - 70's by the first of the week.

RE: Folks from up north must think we're nuts

We are currently in San Antonio and have been watching the local tv weather forecasters. Don't worry about it, they are the same everywhere!! We are from the Seattle area and were home last fall and winter for the first time in 4 winters. We did have our coldest winter in 20+ years with snow. We always laugh and make fun of the weather forecasters there about the first snow in the mountains, rains and rising rivers in the flood areas, etc.!! Believe me, they are all alike! Besides, in the Seattle area, the local weather forecast portions of their newscasts have the highest viewer ratings. I'm assuming its the same in most local markets. Opps, have to go pull the chocolate chip cookies out of the oven!!
