RE: First Ever Trip - Need some recommendations

Well, your right. You shouldn't have too much problem getting into state parks now that school is back in session. If you want to take 101, Sequim SP in great, as is Fort Warden SP in Port Townsend. From that point on you can set your own pace down the coast. There are great state parks about every 2 - 3 hours apart that you can use. Sept. along the coast is usually great weather and if you get any rain, just sit and enjoy the scenery and surroundings. Some suggestions to see: Maritime Museum and Astor Tower in Astoria; all the scenic spots along the coast. Tillamook Cheese Factory. Aquarium at Newport. If you get inland for some reason at McMinnville, be sure to stop at the Evergreen Aviation Museum and see the Spruce Goose. On down the Oregon coast, the Oregon Caves, Rogue River jetboat trips. If and when you hit the CA coast, you've got a whole new selection of choices. Redwoods for one. If your wine drinkers, you can fit in various wine tastings as well!! Enjoy

RE: What do you read on the road?

If I am on the road, mostly road signs. Very good, still chuckling!! I get into some of the local/regional history and other information about the areas that we are in, especially if we are spending a length of time there. Have read some great nonfiction stuff like this, several things that were better than fiction! Then I fill in with fiction, motor home and radio control car magazines. Try to fit in history and biographies as well.

RE: Travelling North

Check out this link. It should tell you what you need to know: Canada Border Services Agency The main thing from this website that you need to pay VERY close attention to are the restrictions on firearms! There are restrictions on the amount of booze and tobacco that is listed. Generally we are asked about potatos and pitted fruits. If you have dogs, have updated vaccinations, however we have never been asked about them in the 20 or 25 crossings into Canada that we have made. Coming back into the US is another thing! Be sure to eat all your beef before you hit US customs. If you have dog food, keep it in the orginal bags, they were going to take ours because I had it in a plastic bucket and they couldn't tell if it was purchased in Canada, which it wasn't!

RE: Safest route from Florence, Or to I-5?

We just took 126 from Florence out to Eugene last week. A piece of cake and a beautiful drive. I would say that you can't really go wrong with any of the e/w routes to get you to the coast and back. The closer to the Portland area you take off from, the heavier traffic you will have for a time, just because of the greater population!! Those south of the Portland, except for Newberg, are great drives. Good luck and enjoy.

RE: Do I need a generator in Southern Utah region?

if you are planning on a honda someday then you might as well get one now. the hondas dont go down in value, so it is not like waiting is buying you anything -- buy it now and use it as much as possible Couldn't agree more! We love to boondock and use ours alot as we preferr the national park campgrounds or BLM. The campgrounds in those national parks don't offer full hookups or only water, so it will come in handy. As stated, nights will be very cool now and a furnace eats up battery power. The Fruita campground at Capital Reef NP is everything a np campground should be. Be sure to stop there. The campground in Bryce is just steps away from the rim of the canyon - great! See our travel blog and photos to see what your in store for!! Enjoy your trip.

RE: Colorado State Park Camping Vehicle Fees?

When Colorado "ambushed" me I had made and paid for reservations. When I arrived in the motor home with a vehicle in tow, I was informed that I owed the daily fees for both vehicles. I was staying for two weeks and it was less expensive to buy an annual Colorado parks pass along with a second park specific pass. I have since been told Colorado has changed something about their fees, but I have never stayed at a Colorado park again nor will I ever do so. BTW, Fifth wheels with a tow vehicle only pay for one vehicle because the fiver is not a vehicle. Even though this is an older thread, I thought I would add my .02 worth. Our experience last summer was very similar to imgoing4it. However, at the first park we stayed in, they didn't charge for the motor home, just the toad. The next park we went to, charged us for the motor home as well. We were finally able to buy the second seasons pass at the discounted rate for it after some spirited discussion from my better half! What bothered us was the inconsistency of how this was intrepreted and applied with a Class A and a towed car. HOWEVER, I have to fully agree with the posters who talked about the size of spots and the sittings of the parks there. We have never found a private, commercial rv park that gives you the room and/or the setting that the Colorado SP do. We have found that almost any state or national park is a bargain and well worth the price vs. the costs in a commercial rv park. I just wish Colorado would get their act together on how they apply the vehicle fees and make it clearer on their website!

RE: Glacier National Park Campground

Renee, As already stated, your rolling the dice on weather, especially on traveling Going to the Sun highway. We have a 33' Class A with one slide out and we were able to easily fit a spot at Agpar. That time of year you should be able to drive around and find a larger spot anyway. Good luck and just be prepared to bundle up!

RE: Northwest Spring Rally, May 13-15, 2011

I see our coastie friends are rather quiet today. Is that perhaps due to losing your voices rooting for the hawkies only to see them do a seaturkey again in the fourth quarter? :h Wow, all that for just a preseason game?!?:@ What would/should us "coasties" have been doing if they had won a meaningless game except to the rookies trying to make the team? I truly don't identify with how satisfied I am about being a "coastie" with what our professional sports teams do! Now, to all you kitty cat lovers out there. Sorry, your loyal fans will probably be leaving the games even BEFORE halftime this year!!:B The purple and gold are on their way back!!

RE: guadalupe mtn. nat.park

It is not too late and Hwy 180 is a good road. We have been there in Jan. and it was cool at night and warm in the day but it can have snow in Nov. too. If you plan on camping in the park there is no hookups and my wife called it a Wal-Mart parking lot. They do have water. Lots of hiking if you like that. Enjoy Jamway hit the nail on the head! 180 is no problem, just watch the wind. Last year, late Oct. early Nov. we had a lot of wind from Carlsbad down to EP. Pulled into the park to kill some time. As stated, no hookups in the campground. Just because it says mountains, don't expect greenery of any kind!! Pretty rugged, but lots of hiking. Enjoy your trip

RE: RV Show deals?

Here us my personal opinion for what it is worth. Yes, they have some good deals at shows, but so do dealers. The advantage of going to the shows is that you can look at a lot of different units and manufacturers product in one place. Saves a lot of running around from dealer to dealer. Most dealers have staff at the show to work trades, financing, etc. Love RV shows, but they can get scary when the better half gets shopping. Agree with the convience aspect of shows. What my impression has been is that the dealers at a show claims that there is a manufacturer incentive within the "show price." However, I have still seen that "show" price posted on the rig a month later back at the dealers lot! The salespeople will give you all sorts of reasons why you have to "buy it at the show," just don't get stampeded with the glitz and pressure they will exert. We did miss on a beautiful clean rig at a show once, but it was 2' longer than our driveway anyway! We still found one that fit, fit 90% of our criteria and was well under the top amount we wanted to spend. My suggestions - kick a lot of tires. The more the better. Remember, there are far more sellers than buyers, especially now! Be patient - I can't emphasis that enough! Set your budget and stay with it, no matter how great the terms and interst sounds. IF you really find a rig at the show that you fall in love for, be tough in your bargaining and don't be afraid to walk away. Good luck and enjoy the search/hunt!

RE: Safe to visit Algodones or San Luis?

We will be going back there this winter. I would assume that since both of them - however, only been to Algodones - depend upon the snowbirds for their economic survival, that the authorities keep things very safe for us!! We're certainly not anticipating any problems. If you watch any local news of any large American city, you would wonder if you were safe in any of them!! See what I'm saying?

RE: Northwest Spring Rally, May 13-15, 2011

Bigdog - the 747 building is going to be the waterpark addition! Ryan - will see what works out. Carolyn is starting to get twitchy about the timing of packing and such. We are looking at the movers coming in around the 10th. of Oct. so things maybe too tight for us to fit it in.

RE: Northwest Spring Rally, May 13-15, 2011

We just got our rig back to our daughters place in Monroe from the Pt. Townsend mini-rally. Great time working down the pennisula and having 5 days with daughter and family at Ft. Stevens SP. From there we went on down the Oregon coast to Florence. Hobo - did I mention that we stopped in Tillamook for some of their fantastic chocolate ice cream. Was thinking of you so I had 2 scoops!! If any of you have thought about stopping at the Evergreen Aviation Musuem in McMinnville, by all means DO IT!! This is the home of the Spruce Goose and we really enjoyed the stop there on our way back north. We have driven by there many times over the past several years, so finally made the stop this time. Glad we did.

Welome back Bob & Sue, Good to hear that your back. Any chipped windshields? Broken tow bar parts? How's that fish tasting? Hobo - had some good ice cream in Seaside today!

RE: Northwest Spring Rally, May 13-15, 2011

We got into Ft. Stevens SP yesterday and daughter and her family got in about 30 minutes after us. Somewhat overcast but very pleasant. Nice walk with the dogs this morning and just getting ready for breakfast/brunch. Not sure whats on the agenda for the day, but it will be fun anyway. Grey whales blowing just off the beach yesterday afternoon when we walked down to it. I guess that is the one drawback here. A long walk out to the beach or a short drive in the car! Should have taken the bike! Bigdog, glad to hear the wedding was a success. Take care everyone.

RE: Northwest Spring Rally, May 13-15, 2011

We will be making a swing through eastern WA. the first 2 weeks of Sept. We will be around then, but will be getting the furniture ready to move down to AZ. Will try to pencil that in but it will depend upon if we have selected a moving company by then or not. Sure hope we can do that by the end of Aug. Sure been grey, overcast and cool down here on the coast this week! Hobo - that homemade ice cream was really good, so didn't make it over to the Elevated Ice Cream Co. in PT last weekend. However, we will stop in Tillamook for ice cream and I will have an extra scoop for you!!

RE: Don't want to miss anything around Colorado Springs

I would suggest Cheyenne Mt. SP just west of CS. Great views and easy access to all things around CS. All of the given suggestions plus: the Olympic Training Center; Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame!! Second the Air Force Academy. For Pikes Peak would recommend the Cog Railroad. Far more relaxing to let them pull you up the mountain! Enjoy the area!
