RE: Can't justify the expense of a new camper!

I guess we were lucky back over 10 years ago when we decided to get what we thought would be our last RV/TC...We, over the years put up with leaking campers and a Motor home. After searching we got down to a Northern Lite and a Bigfoot. We finally settled on a 9.6 2500 brand new Bigfoot. We paid 18,500 for it....and said ouch!!!!
Now that camper gets cheaper the longer we have it!!!
18,500/months owned (147)=$126/month now..Hee hee....
We call it our Portable Cabin....
One leak in all these years....It was the skylight.
Still looks new.
We use it over 80 days a year for trips and visits to friends and relatives. We have not stayed in a Hotel/motel when traveling and we usually do not eat out. Lots of money saved.
The only decisions that most folks need to make about spending the money on a TC is, can the 2 of you get along well enough in the small space and will you really enjoy it?
If you don't know the answers to those questions you need to buy an inexpensive used one and try it...That's what we did after raising out boys and deciding what we wanted to do. We bought a 8'1978 Sixpack for $600 bucks and did that for about a 1.5 years...Even bought an old 1981 3/4ton chevy for $1500.We were sold...
Jim
Don't forget Jim. You have some residual value so it's probably less than 125. I had my jayco listed in my sig for 7 years. Paid 8500 sold for 4500. 4000/84 53 dollars a month. Of course I can only use it about 5-6 months a year. Don't think I'll do that well on my new one.

RE: Where can I buy...

Check fourwheel campers. I think they make a shell for about 6000

RE: Ewww - sewer question

It isn't the most pleasent job in the world. Usually they are stored the the bumper of the rv. If it's too ewww you can use disposable gloves and throw them out when your done. You can also use rubber boots. After a while you'll get good at it and you won't even think about it.

RE: Short-term Internet Access While Traveling

Look at Virgin Broadband. They don't have a contract commitment and I thought the lowest was 20 a month. They charge you 100 dollars for the modem though. No contracts. They use the sprint network if that works for you. I think Verizon has the best off the beaten path signal.

RE: TT's with rear "Garage Style" Storage Area

Just bought a 2010 Springdale 296bhssr (pick it up may 1st) and has the rear garage. I don't know if any of any other floorplans by Springdale have them. My Jayco had a front liftup storage area outside the coach which was pretty handy. It's nice reaching the stuff you need without reaching through the side compartments. I guess you loose some living space with the garage.

Countless hours - New TT

After countless agonizing hours of looking at TT's I just made a down payment on a new TT. Springdale 296BHSSR. Still keeping my Jayco for a little while for those short trips in case I don't want to travel to my permanent site to pick up this beast.

RE: Hitch Weight - Chev 1/2

I know it will take 1,000 with the current hitch and I will be right at that depending on load. I was wondering if I can put a 1200lbs hitch on it. And would it be ok to do provided I'm within my weights.

RE: Hitch Weight - Chev 1/2

I was thinking more like 1000 lbs of stuff which brings me to 6600. Which .15 would be 990. Again a little close. If I needed a different hitch that's fine. Just didn't want to look at another hitch if the truck would not take the load.

Hitch Weight - Chev 1/2

Looking at purchasing a new RV. Dry weight is 5640 and hitch Weight is 840. Is the limitation of the hitch weight due to the OEM hitch on the truck or the truck itself?
The truck is a 2009 Chev Silverado 1/2 tow rating 9500lbs and payload of 1680. Factory hitch has a rating with weight distribution of 1000lbs. The 840 is a little close to my liking espcially with the propane tank up front. I usually tow without water, but not sure where the water tank is in this unit. I don't plan on pulling it across country mostly local trips.
Would I get the 1000 spring bars or 1200. Thanks in advance.

RE: OpenOffice.Org vs Windows 7

I would be surprised if it worked under Vista and not Windows7. They are basically the same internals.

I drove down there in a pouring rain storm. Only the people in florida really know what real rain storms are. Not so much fun. Very interesting place though.

The first day of the reservation must be 11 months way. The other days will be more than 11 months away which is ok. That's the way it works in WI

RE: Looking for TT size/towing suggestions

I just bought a 2009 Chevy Crew Cab. If you got the external Oil cooler which is in the performace package/Tow Package (Depends what they call it in your region) the rating is 9500. If you didn't then the rating is about 6500lbs. If you just are starting out I'd keep the length and weight low so you can get use to pulling something like that. I think 26' would work fine. If you didn't get a slide it would be no problam at all with weights with a slide might get heavy depending on the model.

Some people don't like the factory brake controllers. In my case with it doesn't come standard with the brake controller.

Emailed them. They responded to me in 4 hours and sent me a technical document on how to do it. FYI no more plug in connectors. I just surprised I got a response from someone. Isn't that a novel idea...good customer service.

Go to the the prodigy site and see if that harness is compatable with the newer truck.
They don't list it for my year truck. I've checked. I didn't know Tekonsha bought prodigy...
