RE: Stabilizer jacks

We only use the "Lego" blocks for leveling. Even then, the spaces are usually level enough without them. The least level sites we've ever encountered have all been in KOAs. We avoid them. Sprinters are reasonably stable. Leveling/stabilizing jacks are an extra weight and an extra bother when all we need to do is plug into the electricity if there is any there.

RE: pros and cons

Are there any Leisure Conversion Van owners on this form who would be willing to offer the pros and cons of owning a Leisure Conversion Van? There are a lot ov LTV owners here but you need to clarify a bit more, as Rodger points out, which LTV model you are thinking about. We have the LTV Free Spirit. We've had it nearly 4 years and are quite satisfied with it. In various campgrounds I've met people with RoadTrek Sprinters and PleasureWay Sprinters and when we look at each others' units and compare experiences, we always agree that, except for minor differences, they are pretty much interchangeable.

RE: LTV Electric Sofa Question.

Hi MPSAN, we have the Free Spirit and we had the passenger side gear go bad. We got a new assembly from Wally. As for the brand? LTV makes these sofas in-house. When ours went bad we played the devil trying to understand that the thing that's not a cotter pin is called a cotter pin and how to get it out. Once we had it out I tied the sofa up with ropes looked around (I think) the wooden blocks or some other part of the lifting mechanism and then tied the other end to the frame. To let the sofa down I just untied the ropes. Pretty simple chore but since we got the new assembly we've had no trouble with the sofa..... except for steel rods that come out through the upholstery and poke. I think that when the made our sofa they forgot to weld something. I figured out that our sofa went bad in the first place because people sat in it to raise/lower it, both in the showroom and after we got it. Puts too much strain on the little gears.

RE: Sprinter ?s

BUT the six 6cyc eats alot more fuel for the same horse power From reports of actual results it appears the 6 uses gets about 2mpg less than the 5.

RE: Class B's

It appears to me that you probably can't live in them for extended periods. You're wrong on that score. A good many B owners live in their RVs for various extended periods. And happily at that.

RE: Class B's

Flat out, there just aren't as may Bs as there are As, Cs, TTs, and 5ers.

RE: Towing a small car

Most of those who are recommending specific toads are owners of Class A or C Rvs. As you've seen, nearly all of the B owners can't see the value of a toad. We are highly mobile without one. Yet, the responder who uses her B as a kennel for dog shows has a point.

RE: confusion

Not to brush your important question aside, but this forum has (perhaps) hundreds of identical questions and (perhaps) thousands of replies. You can find them and read to your heart's content. Most everyone replies with what their own favorite is. The true answer is for you to look at floor plans, inspect real RVs, spend a little time in any of them you consider to see how you fit (assuming you are a couple, both of you need to do this). Don't sweat the small stuff such as "which engine".

RE: Help me decide

Did you say you are full-time? That would put a different light on down-sizing. Otherwise, there are washers and dryers in campgrounds. There are small freezers in Bs and plenty of grocery stores en route. Most Bs don't spend much time in one spot; we travel. That's why Leisure Travel calls them travel vans. Most of us don't hook up the sewer pipe because there are dump stations. Most of us don't tow a car because: why?

RE: basic driving questions

When going downhill start cautiously until you know more how your vehicle and you react. On longer downgrades it's important to do like the big trucks: avoid using the brakes. Low gears are preferable to brakes, saving the brakes for the emergency because they will heat and fade if you use them instead of lower gears. We just got back from a trip over the Siskyou pass and on into Oregon (and the reverse). Northbound there are some places where rather sharp curves follow lengthy downslopes. I was able to travel all the way down without using the brakes and, at the same time, keeping a speed that did not interfere with other traffic. In the Sprinter, 5th, 4th, and 3rd gears are all functional up to 60 or more mph.

RE: How to Reduce Overall Cost? MPG vs initial expense.

Other factors to consider: safety in a crash (fibreglass or steel body); stability program and anti-lock brakes. Floor plans. Driver height (above road). How many miles will you use the vehicle before scrapping or changing? (engine longevity). How you maneuver inside the vehicle -- spend some time in the vehicles you consider so you become accustomed to sharing the space. Convenience in emptying your portable sewer.

RE: Engine Oil

We use the Chevron Delo from Costco. Good deal. Good oil. Approved. Got great Blackstone report after 10k miles.

RE: A for-real Camping Van Conversion.... for the DIY'ers

When considering tent-like conversions keep in mind that some National Parks where bears exist have rules that forbid soft-sided camping.

RE: Roadtrek vs. Airstream Interstate

As for the videos, it seemed the Roadtrek one was for the 170, hardly an equal comparison with the Airstream Interstate. The earlier versions of the Interstate had a terrible floor plan but now they seem to have gone with the flow. If you plan to travel as a couple then the extra two chairs in the front take up space that could be devoted to something more functional for full-timing. My vote would go to the 2500 chassis as opposed to the 3500 and I would make certain I stayed within the weight limits. As for you actual choice? I suspect no one has rented both so you're on your own.

RE: I just LOVE Class B's!

I've been tent camping for too long and started looking at RV's in the last few years. I really wanted a VW camping van, small, you can take it anywhere... But since they don't import them anymore I started checking out Class B's and fell in love. I'm saving up for a Sporstmobile now, hoping to find a good deal on a used one...B's ROCK! Coming from tent camping you are one of the ideal individuals for a B.

RE: So Many Sprinters...

Why is that, Rodger? Don't all three build new bodies for their respective models? To perhaps anticipate Rodger's answer, the Freedom II is built on a cab/chassis while the others start as a van and have the body cut away. A rather fine distinction.

RE: So Many Sprinters...

Keep in mind that with the Sprinters (those actually built in the van), all the furnishings have to be carried in through the door rather than built in place. That adds to the labor of building a Sprinter B. Sort off ofsets the cutting off of the body and attaching a new one. Another disadvantage of the Sprinters is that it's more difficult to build and install holding tanks that mold around frame structures and the capacities frequently suffer as a result. However, our personal choice, the Sprinter, is our preference for all of the reasons others have stated and even more.

RE: So Many Sprinters...

WE have a 2007 ltv freedom serenity II . and love it . we looked high and low found nothing better . I:M a big guy 2353 6ft and I fit in the shower just fine . theres plenty of room all over and the M/B diesel at 20mpg didn;t hurt . they seem to be the choice of U.P.S and FED X . before you buy take a real good look at all of them . and for sure fuel will hit $5.bucks a gal soon. It's on a Sprinter cab/chassis, though, and isn't a B (even though LTV claims it to be a B by some sort or regulation they found.

RE: Class B Time Sharing

What seems to work for flying clubs doesn't seem to work for RVs. Most insurance companies dislike such sharing arrangements and without the insurance company being aware of the entire arrangement, it's a big hazard. I've been in two different flying clubs. The monthly dues were collected and the maintenance was done by fixed-base operators. The clubs were incorporated and the insurance was not a problem because aviation insurance companies deal with incorporated clubs. In the last club one of the members wrecked the airplane and the insurance paid off. RVs: a different story.

RE: Which Class B do you drive and why?

All these comments about cheap fuel. Many, myself included, have been paying less for diesel than others pay for regular. In fact, for 5 months now I've bought legal diesel at a regular truck stop for less than Costco sells regular.
