It is hard to square the repeated claims of Fiat unreliability with Ducato wins MotorHome Base Vehicle award for third straight year

RE: The new Dodge van?

Loving Retirement
Perhaps it would be easier to make a comparison between the possible unveiling of a Ducato MH Chassis in the US and the Sprinter cutaway already used to build Views, Navions, etc. These are reported to do well in US mountains. There are serious mountains in Europe. Just a thought.
What I see in the Ducato is a more B-like low-profile C, primarily due to its front wheel drive.

RE: Sleeping in Camper Vans Could Be Deadly

I just got this e-mail that seems related...
Psycho Test
Read this question, come up with an answer and then scroll down to the bottom for the result. This is not a trick question. It is as it reads. No one I know has gotten it right — including me.
A woman, while at the funeral of her own mother, met this guy whom she did not know. She thought this guy was amazing, so much her dream guy she believed him to be just that! She fell in love with him right there, but never asked for his number and could not find him. A few days later she killed her sister. Question: What is her motive in killing her sister?
(Give this some thought before you answer). SCROLL DOWN.

Answer: She was hoping that the guy would appear at the funeral again.
If you answered this correctly, you think like a psychopath. This was a test by a famous American Psychologist used to test if one has the same mentality as a killer. Many arrested serial killers took part in the test and answered the question correctly. If you didn’t answer the question correctly good for you. If you got the answer correct, please let me know so I can take you off of my email list unless that will tick you off, then I’ll just be extra nice to you from now on. Be sure to share the test.

RE: The new Dodge van?

A lot of RVers on these forums swear by the big rigs, and that is fine by me, but I like the smaller style RV, and I know we will gain plenty from bringing over smaller vehicles. I am especially anxious to see the Ducato RV chassis made into a low-profile C, and I think the Bers here will look forward to the Ducato van.

RE: The new Dodge van?

Do you suppose GM's decision to hang onto Opel/Vauxhall was partly for their vans?
On NPR today, the reported reason GM wants Opel is because they have success with small, fuel-efficient cars.

RE: HOLY COW !!! Check out this rig !!!

This style is called a truck conversion motorhome. Several companies have been producing them since the mid to late 1990s.
While the people who say they would rather have a diesel pusher probably won't be able to change their mind, here are some things to know about them.
A much heavier rated chassis than a DP if they are using a Class 8 truck chassis. Especially a full tandem chassis like the one picture. That is not just a tag axle.
Towing capacity. The heaviest capacity I have seen in a DP is 15,000 lbs. The hitch on a truck conversion this size is rated for 40,000 lbs. and the truck has the capacity to tow that weight.
Safety. In the event of an emergency you have three doors. Two in the cab and one on the side of the coach body. Escape windows would be similar on either motorhome. You don't have to constantly enter through the passenger seat.
Access for maintenance and repair. It takes about 30 seconds for you to open the hood to get to the engine. How long will it take to take apart the bedroom to see the top of the engine in a DP. Some repair shops charge a premium labor rate to work on a DP because of the access problems. Talk to diesel mechanics who have worked on both styles of chassis and see which they prefer.
Transmission. A DP uses a Allison 6 speed transmission. This is a hydraulic based transmission so cooling can be a concern. The truck conversions use a 12 speed automatic transmission. It is actually a standard gear box with a computer controlled clutch. There is no clutch pedal. It has a load sensing feature which means it can skip gears depending on the load, elevation of the road, etc.
Conrad
To your knowledge, could all of these benefits of the C-class truck conversion be delivered in a comparable floorplan MH with comparable price range to current DP A-class MHs?
If so, maybe we should have ways to share info on these in-between class MHs/

RE: Buying RV "Factory Direct" Phoenix Cruiser

We bought a Lazy Daze a few years, factory direct....the only way you can get a new LD. It was a wonderful experience, price was good (non-negotiable) and delivery was super. And we love the rig!
Ted H.
That sounds really good! It seems like selling RVs thru dealerships like we do for autos is a poor business model for the RV type product. Since they are meant for long trips, fly and buy from the builder makes good sense. We were discussing the numbers as to how more $ could go into the product w/ factory direct...
Say we have a very large average-quality builder who uses dealers to sell his Model Q RV which costs him $40k – say $24k material and $16k labor, This model generally sells for a purchase price of $68k (MSRP = $80k). Both builder and dealer each made $14k on this unit.
Now, what if a well-known-for-quality builder sells directly to public and sells its version of the similar Model Q RV (MSRP=$80k) for the same $68k. Suppose they are also happy with a profit of $14k for a unit.
That means there is $14k available to make the previous builders $40k unit better. What would be the breakdown of how this money is spent. For instance
$5k extra for materials
5k for labor, and
4k for warranty. Advertising, and inventory financing
In this very WAG, it would mean that to make a typical quality rig costing $40k to build would require another $10k to turn it into a high-quality unit, or a 25% overall increase - $20% increase in materials and 30% labor increase.
Is this close to the $ cost of quality?
On Edit: If so, we have merely taken $10k of the $14k that a dealer would get, and diverted it directly into product quality.

RE: HOLY COW !!! Check out this rig !!!

For a vehicle of this size, I wonder if, in addition to the department of motor vehicle registration, you also have to take it to the post office so they can assign it a zip code?

It is arguable that the looks of just about any RV is pretty much an acquired taste. I think that is why we have all the swirly decal/paint jobs.

For anyone who really embraces the adage, 'Don't leave home without it.':)
Obviously no need for a toad, since its gravitational attraction causes anyplace else to close-in to within a walking distance.
The omnipresent deity should find this a good fit!

RE: questions from a Class C beginner

I think klhutch has one here and has said a lot about it. I toured one at a cg and really liked it. We have the Chevy 6.0 and it has been fine and lots of power. We towed the boat once, but only 1000 lb.
