RE: Building my own looks....

Your project is an inspiration to all of us who want to do the same. I would suggest at least investing in a couple of extra batteries and charger. It would at least double your work time. As for the wings go I would I would recommend an aluminum skeleton of say a 1"x1" box tube or so. PM me and I could probably help u with this. I have a lot of scrap lengths around the shop and would be willing to try what I can. Aluminum,as for now, is extremely low and is rising slow. I have been purchasing lengths at competitive prices to steel.

V-10 question

I was just curious of how the V-10 does. How well does it do on climbing hills with a load. I have a big block now. It does ok if I do not have a toad.

RE: Tire opinions ?

I agree with SoCal. I am on my third set of BFG's and have no complaints. They stick well in wet grass, over 60k on all three sets. They have a huge selection of sizes and load ratings.

RE: Open letter to all truck camper manufacturers

An all aluminum TC has been on my mind for some time. Take a marine/ automotive approach. I have built hundreds of towers on off-shore fishing boats and they were all 100% welded frames. Take aluminum boats now they are all welded. They all take a beating beyond what we put a camper through. With the right structure the entire frame and skin could be welded to ensure no water intrusion. The key would be were to allow flex to happen in order to eliminate weld failure. This topic really gets the mind racing!

RE: jponder what is a throttle cable?

jponder,
Is everything else stock on your truck. I was wondering about what gear ratio is best and other components that effect fuel mileage. I have a gasser and get almost 15MPG loaded and 11-12MPG loaded. I am always in the market for a diesel if I find what I want. I am trying to get more knowledge on what I need to amke the right purchase.

RE: Truck Campers and HOAs

I agree that HOA's have a purpose to protect your investment. Yet the rules can be taken out of context when applied to a temporary violation. I would contact the president of HOA and ask to see the R&R's. I would even go as far as leaving a note with the LEO's number that you contacted in order to show your initiative to resolve the conflict.
Good Luck,

RE: 16.5 rims with E-load tires

This post is very interesting to me because I would have never thought that a manufactured part that was originated for a four wheel drive would be so limited. The rims I went to look at are an ALCOA-type rim that the man had bought to use on a rock crawler that he is building. They are 12" wide!! I am going to need to be sure they are going to work before I use them but at $100 buck for four I almost could recycle them to get my money back. I don't know also the way to determine hub centric or lug centric. Our camper was damaged last week by a tree falling on it and may be totaled because I just discovered the damage and it has been rained on all week.

RE: 16.5 rims with E-load tires

Thanks for all the help. I knew I would get it here. I am going to get more info tomorrow on the wheels when I see them. I am very skeptical though. I'll post what I discover.
SoCal,
I am back in South Carolina. We cut the trip short at three months but had a great time and learned a lot. We both had job opportunities arise. Christina as a spa manager and I got on with the railroad. I am manufacturing large equipment that builds and maintains railroad tracks. I also am up to my ears in ornamental work at my shop. I am putting in 15-17 hr days between the two. Isn't that the life of a welder though?;) Thanks for asking.

16.5 rims with E-load tires

I found a nice set of aluminum rims for a great price they are 16.5 diameter. They have a 3700Lb rating. I am trying to find a set of tires that are all -terrain and E load. I checked a couple tire sites but i had no luck. It appears that the size is not popular or just not in an good aggressive and E range. Anyone come across it before? Thanks.

RE: Genny question.

SoCal,
I had little trouble out of my Dynasty 200dx as long as I stay under 190amps. I was installing some Outrigger plates on a center console boat while on dock and needed 200 amps and couldn't get it. My Passport plus will push it until it is run close to max. The only drawback is getting enough voltage to initiate arch till the generator really draxw on the engine. I have an idle control switch that will let it idle up for more initial power. I believe I need to check the condition of my outlets and see if there is a clean connection giving me max flow of voltage. As for the diesel, I will look into those locally. The prices on welding equipment are unbelievable right now.
The Alton name is new to me until I found this one locally. It is a 4 stroke, it boasts a 65bd. I have not been around any four stroke gennies to compare them to. I would only use it when I am boondocking (hunting properties,etc.). If I camp in a park I have no need for the genny.
Thanks for the help,

RE: Genny question.

Thanks for the help! I had a feeling that it would be incapable. Well I guess I will sell the 4000watt because I found an Alton generator for $225 new in the box and it is four stroke. Now I have to match my needs to the correct generator. That I may need to do some research on figuring what a 200 amp welder will need to run.

Genny question.

I have a 4000w Generac now. It has 110/220 outlets. I use for running the camper as well as work. Its not enough to do what I need when I run welding equipment but it is close. So rather than buy a large unit that would only be used for work I was wanting to buy a 2500w 4-stroke for the camper and then possibly run the two parallel. The Alton 2500w has 110/220 outlets. How would I set the two up? If I had two 110v units could they be run parallel to make 220v?
Thanks

RE: Young full timer?

First off you have found the right place. This forum will give you most any answer you will have in the full-timing adventure. The folks you meet here all an individual strength that can help you different ways technically.
My advice is take a hard look at what you purchase as truck/camper because it can make all the difference. Spend time deciding how much room you need and how you plan to travel and live. For me the truck camper gave me the most versatility to travel, boondock easily and most of all cost(no tax,tag and low maintenance). Preparation is key, use the resources you have there as much as you can before you go. You wont be able to assume you can fix it yourself all time. You don"t know when it is going to break and if you will have a place for you to fix it. The road can make you feel alone when you really need some help. The other hand, I meet some the best people that don't hesitate to open arms to a new friend while traveling.
As for making money, I would recommend a trade in construction. There are nuclear power plants being built and that wont quit. The key is finding people that are willing to travel for work, ie. you. You could get some welding education/experience and get into a field that pays well.
Good luck on whatever you do. Don't be afraid to post your thoughts here and take the good with the bad, reality with the fantasy. You only live once. There is no argument to that!

RE: Do friends and family treat you different?

In our situation we planned on six-months and then return. We tried to maintain our social life and prepare for the trip. It really became overwhelming at times with work all day then come home prepare (downsizing, sell house, pack, repair camper,etc.). I was surprised how many of our friends took offense to our busy schedule. Even more surprising so was our parents were most supportive only a lot of questions from them, most of which we had the answers (other than the infamous "what if"). All in all I found out a lot about my friends and I can't be sure if it was jealousy, but it was some sort of selfishness.

RE: How bout some GOOD news...and a question

I don't have a class A but I wired my roof top duo therm to 115 volt plug. This way i can run it out the camper and use a heavy extension cord to run it solo. It only trips a breaker when the fan is set to high for a long period of time. I run it on low/ medium with no problems. The rest of my rig I run off the inverter.
