RE: AZ snowbirds - when will you head south??

3rd or 4th week in Oct. Probably Oct. 23rd.
I should read a little more carefully, we are headed for Texas.
Oh shoot - I thought maybe we had convinced you to switch your loyalties :)

RE: Calgary to Whitefish?

From Calgary - South on 2, west on 3 thru' the Crowsnest, to Elko BC and south on 93 into Whitefish
Easy with no big grades. Way back when I was growing up in Calgary we used to go to Whitefish once each winter to ski - back when Norquay was the only local choice (other than the slow long shuttle into Sunshine - with no lifts!) That route brings back memories!

RE: Hauling Fire Wood

We just returned from a one month trip to northern Colorado. We spent some time dry camping in the National Forest west of Ft Collins in Poudre Canyon. We have camped here before and have always brought a good supply of mesquite firewood.
We also spent over a week dry camping in the Roosevelt National Forest above Boulder. We camped at Peaceful Valley.
Trying to be respectful and follow the rules we did not bring any mesquite firewood this year. Well, that was a big mistake. :M
Good for you!
One of the first things the camp host asked is did you bring me any mesquite? :S
I told them no, because I had read on RV.net that this was a no-no.
Absolutely correct!
To be sure I decided to drop in at the National Forest Headquarters just outside of Boulder, (Hwy 36, on the way to Lyons).
I talked to the Forest Ranger in charge of the Roosevelt National Forest office. I asked him if there was any problem in bringing aged mesquite into Colorado. He comment there was none. Dry mesquite contains no bugs that are harmful.
USFS field folks are usually the last to know! I know because I spent over 20 years, with the Colorado State Forest Service trying to educate the "Feds" in how to recognize and be proactive in dealing with and recognizing harmful forest pests.
In fact mesquite logs can carry potentially harmful wood-infesting insects. To make such a comment without at least examining the facts is a bit lax IMHO.
So, chill7, thanks a lot for your info. :M
His information was/is correct! Gald you thanked him.
We missed out on a lot of good meals cooked over mesquite. Several camp hosts were disappointed in not getting some free mesquite to cook with. And I ended up spending a whole bunch of money on buying firewood in Colorado. And I use that term firewood very loosely. Pine and Aspen don’t make a good campfire!

RE: Monument Valley???

Anything in that area cheaper than $45. ?
I believe the Nation has a "rustic" cg (no hookups) adjacent to their visitor center. Don't know their rate though.

RE: Pa Co Chu Puk campground at Ridgway SP, CO, HD vs. HA

HA sites are normally reserved for handicapped folks until a certain time - usually 6PM and then they are "open" for that night. At least that is my understanding but check with CO S.P. first thing Monday or try to call the S.P. office direct.

RE: Raton Pass

I have a stupid question. If the engine and trans are warm from the climb, why stop when the downhill grade and no throttle input would have little to no heat generation, and the increased airflow from moving would allow for faster cooling of both?
Warm is one thing, hot to the point of boiling over is something entirely different. Water boils at a lower temp with increasing altitude.
If the engine is close or very near the boiling point for that day/altitude/temp, the reduced engine speed coming down the mountain will cause reduced water flow thru the radiator thus increasing the temp in the radiator due to the reduced flow thru the oil cooler.
This will cause the temp to automatically increase to a point of burning the transmission oil (fluid). Depending on the condition of the radiator hoses it will cause a tremendous pressure build up with the cooling system.
If the engine temps are just slightly above normal operating conditions, then stopping to let the engine components cool down make no sense at all. This is assuming that the brakes are not an issue. if the brakes are hot and smelly, then thats another can of worms.
Excellent answer! and folks - believe it!

RE: Delay of more than 5 vehicles

PA12DRVR - you summarized my thoughts on the subject so not sure why there would be flaming going on.
I am still amazed at the reactions. Really all that was said is when you drive on one-lane roads you impact traffic much more than if you drive on two-lane (each way) roads. Keep that in mind and be respectful to others by using provided turn-out lanes.
Have a really hard time figuring out what is so sensitive about this. It is almost like I hit a nerve with a few people......ooops
I agree - sensitive or not - too much flaming here so I am invoking the rule re flaming! But first - the law says 5 or more with NO reference to speed!
Bye all.

RE: Chevy 1500 LT 6.0 vs 2500 with a 6.0

I have been looking for a 2500 gas burner, but just can't seem to find ont that I like.. I found a good deal on a 1500 LT with the 6.0 that says Max towing is 10,500 lbs. I can't find any data on the towing weight of the 2500 HD with 6.0..
MY 2009 GMC 2500HD is rated to pull (5th wheel) between 13K and 14K with tow package. 6.0l and 4.10 rear end, 2 wd. ext. cab.

RE: Campgrounds around Gasper, BC

So - OP - which is it - Jasper National Park (AlbertJ) or Gasper BC. Most folks are assuming you mean the National Park. If so #16 takes you right intto the Park. Then I recommend you take 93 - the Icefields Parkway to Lake Louise. Then #1A - Bow valley parkway - to Castle Mountain junction with 93 and follow that south to Radium. Continue south on 93 into MT and Whitefish and you are right next to Glacier N.P. Good luck with reservations in any of those Parks. This is absolutely peak time for them Best bet - figure where you want to stop for the night and get in line before noon!

"Wasn't sure if I should post this here or in 'RVing in Canada and Alaska', but thought more people will see it here.
Effective noon Friday, July 23, no more campfires till we get some rain.

RE: Best RV Parks In The West

Burro Creek Canyon .. north of Wickenburg about 60 miles, Arizona
Kartchner Caverns State Park .. Benson, Arizona
Valley of Fires Recreation Area campground .. Carrizozo, New Mexico
Arrowhead Point Campground, Buena Vista, CO
Rex Hale Campground, Wapiti, WY
Buffalo Bill State Park, Cody WY
Chadron State Park, NE
Custer State Park, SD
Hey Shadow - Burro Creek is also one of our favorite bird-watching places in the spring but no FULL hookups IIRC!
But we agree it is one neat place! One spring weekend we tallied over 100 different bird species!
On edit: Oops my DW corrected me - along with our tarvel log. We were there for 3 nights in Feb. 2000. We actually only identified 20 + species and saw a bunch more that we could not identify. The camp host, of that time, told us they had tallied about 200 but later in the spring - March/ early April. By May it gets pretty hot 'cause the cg is in the bottom of a deep/steep canyon. Burro is one of the few streams in that area that does flow year around, most years.
Sorry that I mis-spoke but it still is a great place in early spring!

This Op-ED discussion has gone on long enough. National vs. Provincial vs State cv who knows where ?? Yes we seem to agree that our life style is getting more and more expensive. The alternative? Stay Home? Not for me thanks!

OK friend - I'll start with Winchester State park in N.Central Idaho.
Then move over to Jesse Honeyman S.P on the Oregon Coast, just south of Florence. And while I'm there one of the best pie shops is Nina and kathleen's cafe in Florence but I just hijacked your thread. Sorry I just could not residst!

RE: Towing your 5th Wheel

Might as well just find a nice condo. RV's need attention and they don't weather to well.
OR consider renting an RV or park model in the RV pasrk of your choice for what ever time period you want to stay.
For example - in our Park you can rent a new park model in the winter for about $2000 a month - fully equipped with weekly cahnge of linens. Now you do the math - buy a large RV (by law cannot be larger than 400 sq. ft (same as a park model) about $30,000 and suitable truck - $30,000 for a total of $60,000 plus upkeep, storage charges when not in use, expense of moving it etc. The initial outlay - 60,000 would buy (60/2)= 30 months, or 7 years of snow birding minimum.

RE: Propane - First test - Any advice?

Assuming a "pro" repaired your propane line(??)they should have finished with the proper pressure-drop tesit (manometer). If not done by a propane preofessional then I would worry. Even so - take it to a propane distributor or RV repair place and have them do a moanometer test. That is really the only way to be sure!

RE: tow vehicle weight ratings list.

No less than a 3/4 ton truck. If going with a gas motor, nothing less than a 350, 351 or 360 cid though a 454 or 460 would be best , 3.73 gears.
Moving to Colorado? If you expect/hope to do any traveling/exploring in CO - then ONLY consider 4.10 differential (your truck dealer will know what that means). 3.73 differentials have a tough time in Colorado - anywhere west of the flatland!
