RE: Desert camping w/ freezing temps

Dove Springs for MLK weekend it got down into the 20's. Sure enough we awoke to a frozen fresh water tank and lines (yes I had the heat on all night). Around noon the waterlines thawed and we had water. I ended up blasting down to Ricard campground with a 5-gal water jug for water in the morning. Most likely the design of the TH and placement of waterlines will determine if yours will freeze or not. Philip what is mlk? Martin Luthor King I thought he was answering a Jeopardy question: "What is 'mlk', Alex?"

RE: Adding A Second Invertor Switch

Here's what I did: Have a little 400 watt for the T.V. and DVD player. Mounted it next to the batteries, ran romex back to the T.V. cabinet. Then opened up the inverter and soldered two wires onto the existing switch, ran these two wires to a switch mounted in my fuse box. To turn on inverter you either use the factory switch or the one wired in parallel. Using this method you could wire as many switches as you wanted, just all would have to be off for the inverter to be off. Of course this would probably void the factory warranty but I didn't care, have had it quite awhile and it only cost about $30.00. I may have to drop by your camp to check this out. Will you be at Teagle this weekend?

RE: California Weight Check Point Calimesa This Week

FYI, all pickups including the smaill ones have to be registerd as comm. vehs unless there is a permanetly attached camper attached. Shell do not quailfy as campers. This is first hand info not heresay. That's why I shamelessly park in the yellow "Commercial Loading" zones. If I have to pay for the premium plate, I might as well get a nice parking (I mean "loading") spot.

It sounds risky to me. Strangers from the Interwebs give me the creeps.

RE: "Other Side" of Hwy 111

Don't you just love pool contractors? :R (Sorry if anyone reading is a pool contractor. I'm sure you're the exception to the rule.)

RE: Heartland Cyclone 3010 Fifth Wheel

Regarding the CA Endorsement, there are threads on this forum, but YES, you do need to get this endorsement. It's called a Restriction 41 Endorsement. It consists of having to take the written non comm'l class a test. Not the drive portion. I can assure you it will take you half a day at the DMV because only 1 or two people in the whole joint will know about this test. I came with all the info, pointed it out, drew a picture, yada yada and it still took them a couple hours to figure it out, literally. Never been pulled over to check it, but it Cali it is law, and I've heard of holiday weekends out towards Glamis and busy areas that cops had pulled some people over checking for this, so better safe than sorry. I just took this test today. The test is very easy. Just common sense stuff. Just went to the test window with no appointment. Was in and out in a half hour. Manke was right though, they had to check around to find out what to do but it was quick. After I passed I was given a sticker that says I may tow a fifth wheel between 10,001 and 15,000 lbs. They will send me a new license with it on it. I did this last December. I didn't realize it meant a new DL photo. I had to give up my nice sun-tanned photo that I've had for years and trade it in for a rain soaked pale trailer trash picture. I guess that's the real me. :S At least the test was quick. My DMV (Newhall) found the test right away and took care of me pretty quickly.

RE: Fuel Leak - Onan 5500

Thanks btd. It looks like there's a small filter (maybe 2" long) in the fuel line right before the carb. It looks like it's leaking near that filter. Anybody know what that filter is on the 5500? Anybody had any experience with it?

Fuel Leak - Onan 5500

Last weekend I discovered a fuel leak in my Onan 5500. The fuel line is leaking right below the carb and running down the line. Any tips on troubleshooting this? I've never done anything more to my gen than change the oil & filters.

RE: Question on outside speakers?

It is clear that you have no idea of the origins of the term "blue-hair." Firstly, duh. The origin common knowledge. The recap is appreciated though. Secondly, it's a metaphor. We can't actually see anyone's hair color on these forums. Gotta bet back to licking the windows now. Peace.

Now you did it.......I think I hear the tree huggers!..:E I was so proud of myself for not mentioning the Greenies in the same post as the Bluehairs. :C BTW - Sorry code3run for the complete hijack. It couldn't be helped. :B

RE: Question on outside speakers?

Thanks for all the nice comments, especially the blue hair as it's better than no hair. Besides a MH I own a F350 and 5er but not a TH. In my many years on these forums this is the first where I should not comment unless I own one. You all seem to be a touchy group and part of the me generation. I ride dual sport and boondock a lot but usually camped besides a lake. The Desert is not my thing so maybe sound does not travel as far and loud as it does across water. Having to listen to someones hard rock from 1/2 mile away (sound travels that well across water) is not my idea of being a good neighbor and is not how I was brought up in the camping community. You were correct in assuming that outside speakers are not my thing and yes, I use headphones when watching my outside LCD and no, it's not becauses of the generator running as I have an inverter with lots of batteries to power it. Again, the comments come from a point of total inexperience. It's a shame you had a bad experience where you camp. Your river experience and our desert experience are apples and oranges though. Is our group touchy about this subject? Yep. Kinda like you're touchy about loud music at the river: it's intrusive. Likewise, the off-topic posts are intrusive. See how that works? And as far as the "me" generation goes, how insulting (and off base). :S You can see how we get "touchy" when folks wander into these conversations and make baseless judgments like these.

RE: Question on outside speakers?

Just to chime in with my own 2¢... Tolerance is a two-way street. The "Bluehair" threads follow a typical pattern where someone either innocently stumbles into a Toy Hauler thread without realizing it or intentionally jumps into the thread out of oneryness so they can pick a fight. Either way, the comments are generally the same: "Stop doing whatever it is that you're doing and start doing what I think you should be doing." Well, I guess they'd be right if we were in an RV park, but we're not and they're not in a park and they're not right. So the word "Bluehair" inevitably pops up to describe the person. Not once have I seen someone say "you old bluehair" or any other mention of age. The word isn't describing a certain age, it's describing a state of mind. It's a word to describe "them who are not part of us and are acting a certain way about it". However you say it or whatever word you use, the meaning is the same. We can be politically correct and substitute the term with another one, but what does that solve? We've abused our language like that for years with all sorts of different words. Every time a word is shunned, another one follows right behind it. Think of all the fun words we used to have to describe someone we thought was a moron. My favorite word when I was a kid (I can't say it anymore) rhymes with, uh, tree-guard. How many different incarnations has that word seen over my lifetime? I think the current version is "window licker". Anyway, hate the word Bluehair if you want, but another word will come hot on its heels. Is anyone using the word to disparage the elderly? No way. Frankly though, it's about the most decent term I can think of to describe some of the folks who rant on about the evils of outdoor speakers in a Toy Hauler thread. So tolerance? You bet, I'm all about tolerance. Even better than that, I appreciate, rather than tolerate people who were born different than me. But being born different is not the same as acting different. And if you chose to act a certain way, then don't act surprised by the consequences. /Rant

RE: Microwave broke, do i need a special one to replace it with?

I didn't know that lol. I thought it was 110v and 115v was some weird thing... Thanks! If you plug your 115v nuke into your 110v outlet the carousel will spin counter-clockwise and it will freeze the food instead of cooking it. :W
