RE: Short Box 5th Wheel Towing?

According to my 2008 Chevy owners manual, for 1/2T's, only reg. cab and ext. cab with 6.5' or 8' box are suited for 5th wheel. I'm sure they exclude the crew cab due to the short box, because otherwise the crew has high towing capability.

RE: 3.42 Gears????

What tranny does the GM come with? MANY of the newer 6 sp autos have a lower overall ratio with 3.42's than the older ones with 4 sp auto's and 4.10's. So reality is, with 3.42's you would get the best of both worlds. Low initial take gears, and a taller high gear for mpg's while driving empty.
Marty
Like he said.
I suspect the new one you're looking at has the new 6spd auto, which will be better than the older 4spd/3.73 combo. If you normalize the overall gear ratios, then 1st gear in the new 6spd/3.42 will be equivalent to a 4spd with 3.92 gears. I would go for it.

RE: buying off lot or special order..best deal ?

If i can not find what i want on a dealers lot and forced to special order...will it cost a lot more. ....what happens to negotiations at this point ? thnks, wolfie
No, it will not cost more... probably less since you can delete the stuff you don't want. The only penalty is you have to wait, but that's no big deal.

RE: Allowable weight

Yes, you can. Any pop-up that's less than 1500# will work fine. Just make sure it's intended for a short bed.
Good luck.

RE: Largest Bathroom in smallest tc

Going off-road with a TC?
There are several choices, including Northstar.
N*
Think about unbolting and removing the jacks before you go off the pavement with any TC.
Good luck,
John
I've never heard of anyone removing their jacks routinely; I'm curious to hear how many actually do that?
I now remove my jacks in May, and reinstall them in September because the camper is on the truck full-time for the summer. Before that, I came close to snagging some rocks while off-road. For the rest of the year, my camping is very limited, and never off-road, so the jacks stay on.

RE: Cassette Toilets

To me that's the only downside to the Earthroamer. I've been wondering the same thing. Seems like it wouldn't be much better than a port-a-potty.
A cassette toilet is nothing more than a glorified porta-potti, which works fine for us. Just dump it when you can.

RE: Has your TC ruined your truck?

After 2 years and 21k miles, my '08 is still quiet when the camper is removed. I'm right at the 7000lb GVWR with camper & passengers, and a little over with the boat also connnected.
I know what your're talking about, however... my '98 Ford started to creak after several years of TC hauling, but nothing ever broke.

RE: DO YOU know what your TC floor is made-out-of ?

3/4" plywood with another 3/4" plywood & foam structure glued & screwed underneath (built by me to elevate the camper another 3/4").

RE: LT or P tires?

The P's are fine unless you have a VERY heavy trailer. I use the stock P's and I like them. Will probably replace with LT-C's when these wear out.
Some may try to tell you to get LT-E's. A big mistake for a 1/2-ton in my opinion (rough ride).

Yes, snow! We got hit today.
Really stinks because my garden did so poorly this year due to the global cooling here in Colorado.

RE: Brake Pads and a dealer quote for them....

The front disc brakes on my previous truck (98 F150) lasted 112,000 miles and the rear drum brakes were still OK. That truck carried my pop-up TC and towed my boat (w/o trailer brakes) for years.
That amazed me since I've heard that the F150's had poor brakes.
We'll see how long the brakes last on my new Chevy.

RE: setting up chevy to tow

Get the prodigy plug and play and another mount then you can swap easier from vehicle to vehicle.
Your trailer isn't big enough to swap out a new hitch and tires.
Reset the weight distribution hitch for the Suburban and pump up the current tires to maximum psi and hit the road.
I agree. You don't need to change the tires. I probably have the same tire size as you on my '08 Chevy and the factory P's work great. I'm sure I have more weight on my rears than you will, since I have a slide-in camper and tow a boat.

RE: 2009 K1500 Suburban Towing Experience

I asked earlier in the year...no reply. So I will ask again. Anyone towing with 09 K1500 Burb 5.3 liter, 6 speed AT, 3.42 rear end. What are you towing? How does it tow? Any comparisons to the "older" Burbans....mine is a 2006. Thanks
I don't have the 6-spd, but plan to get one in my next truck.
1st gear is 4.03:1 in the 6spd versus 3.06:1 in your current 4spd. So, with a 3.42 rear-end, your effective gear ratio would drop to ~3.93 compared to your current 4.10.
You probably won't notice much difference towing (ignoring HP gains in the newer motor), but should get better mpg unloaded.

RE: Storm chasers

Thank you snowhawkwoman,
That is a good start. I also want to see the tall grass praire in Kansas if there is any left.
I reckon with all the wide open space out there that boondocking should not be a problem either.
Wide open privately owned space.
True, is mostly privave land.
We go to Nebraska every summer to enjoy the fishing & boating and we never have to chase storms; just stay in any State Park and the storms will come to you, every night.
If you want to see how watertight your camper is, just go there. When the rain comes, it'll be coming at you sideways at 50mph.

RE: Truck Camping Mileage

Your truck must get VERY low mileage. Our Honda gets 35mpg hiway and our truck gets 16.5mpg with the camper. We frequently take the TC on 150 mile trips from our house to the mountains. The TC is less expensive for us, although that's not why we choose to use it.
Here's the math:
Honda: (300mi/35mpg)*($2.40/gal) = $20.57 fuel
Truck & Camper: (300mi/16.5mpg)*($2.40/gal) = $43.63 fuel
Cost delta = ($43.63 - $20.57) = $23.06
I won't stay in a $23 motel.

RE: TC Pass thru window

Our slider doesn't leak and yes, we do use it to access stuff in the truck.
We just returned from a camping/fishing/boating trip, and drove through 1 hour of torential rain with no leaks. The rain was so intense that water poured out of bilge of the boat for 30 minutes after the rain quit.

RE: Air Bags shifted on axle

Solution. Quit messing around with PITA balloons and get some real suspension. Steel for instance!!!!
Unless you plan to keep the camper on the truck full-time, I wouldn't. I did that on my previous truck, and will never again mess with the stock springs.

RE: Broken Firestone airbag

Wow, what are odds, two broken airbag situations posted on the same day!
Like I replied on the other post, contact Firestone directly. Maybe they'll send you a new bag free under warranty.
Thanks but I need a fast fix.
Can I buy a single airbag without all the hardware.
Yes, you can buy a single airbag, without the hardware, from suspensionconnection.com, and probably many other mail order sites.
