RE: TC Registration -- Washington?

I am fairly certain that active duty military who are assigned to Washington State (Ft. Lewis, Bremerton Navy Base, etc.) do not need to obtain Washington registration on their vehicles while they are assigned to Washington as long as the service member continues to consider some other state as his "place of residence". So if you still have your CA plates and wish to claim continuing CA residence (and deal with CA income tax, etc.) you should be able to keep and use your CA plates in Washington. If you are voluntarily re-registering your truck in WA and/or claiming WA residence to avoid CA income taxes, then you may be stuck paying WA use tax on the camper (and probably the truck), as I don't think the active military provision would be applicable. Washington DOL and DOR aggressively seek out and prosecute those who don't follow state licensing and registration rules. There are lots of examples around here of people buying cars, trucks, RVs, airplanes and yachts in Oregon where there is no sales tax and then trying to sneak them into Washington without WA licensing and without paying use tax. If I were you I would play by the rules as the penalties for not doing so can be substantial. I believe the civil penalty starts at 200% of the tax, and the penalty for willful evasion can involve criminal sanctions. Happy Camping!

Dash Button Linking House Battery to Starter?

I recently read about a Class C which had a button on the dash allowing you to connect the RV house battery to the engine starter so you could start the engine in an emergency when your engine battery is dead. I assume the dash button was a bypass of the solenoid that protects the engine battery from being drained on the house circuit. Anybody have do-it-yourself instructions for installing a similar button in my gasoline engine Chevy 2500HD? Thanks, and Happy Camping!

RE: Best battery

Go to the Lifeline web site and check out distributors. I got mine from Empire Batteries in Tigard, Oregon. Batteries Plus can order them (or so they claim) but their prices on other products are not the lowest, so not sure what you would pay. Happy Camping!

RE: Best battery

I have had a Lifeline Group 31 in my Lance for 6 years. I have not opened the battery compartment door one time in those 6 years, as Lifeline batteries are sealed and there is nothing you can or should do to them. Cost more to buy but worth it to me. Hoping to get 2 or 3 more years out of it. Happy Camping.

RE: Lance Warranty/Customer Service is PO me off // Update

This post demonstrates the hazard of buying a brand of camper without local service availability. Lance did not promise that they would pay somebody in your hometown to fix your camper under warranty. They promised that if something breaks and is covered by warranty, they will fix it after you bring it back to the dealer. Don't see Lance as the bad guy here. Perhaps OP should have purchased a different brand with local service facilities. Around here every camper manufacturer has a dealership within 20 miles of my house. I understand the situation is different in other parts of the country.

RE: Leins

As others have already noted, if the camper is titled under state law, a lien must be shown on the certificate of title to be enforceable against a buyer. If state law does not require the camper to be covered under a certificate of title, you can check with the UCC filing office (typically the Secretary of State) in the state where the seller resides. UCC liens are filed under the name of the owner (seller) and you need to be very careful with exact spelling of names or your search will be worthless. In the absence of a certificate of title or filed UCC, you as buyer acting in good faith and without actual knowledge of existing liens will take the camper free and clear of any other liens that may be floating around out there pursuant to Section 9-307 of the Uniform Commercial Code. This assumes that you actually pay the seller fair value for the camper. Happy Camping!

RE: lance camper

I have had a Lance for 6 years and love it, but I would not necessarily describe Lance campers as the "best". I have always thought that BigFoot were the best for fit and finish and a used BigFoot would probably be less likely to have water damage than traditional built campers. Lance may be the Chevrolet of campers rather than the Mercedes, but they make a good reliable unit.

RE: Lance solar panel

I bought my panel and charger from Arizona Wind and Sun and then took the panel and parts to the Lance dealer for mounting. I think they charged me a hundred bucks - maybe less - on my prewired 2003 model 1010. If you want a bigger panel than Lance sells but don't want the risk of drilling the roof, etc., my way works great. Happy Camping.

RE: Lance Model 1010 2002

I have owned a Lance 2003 1010 for 6 years and love it. I carry it on a 3/4 ton HD truck and have never had any issues. Price you were quoted is around 2000 - 3000 less than what I have seen for similar models, but check for damage, etc. Happy Camping

RE: fold up bulkhead step

You can store Lifeline AGM batteries inside occupied spaces. Don't know about other brands. Happy Camping.

RE: Demand Better from TC Manufacturers

I have a 2003 Lance that I purchased new and which has been perfect through 6 season of VERY heavy use and maybe 75,000 miles of travel in WA, OR, CA, NV, WY, MT, ND, SD, NM, CO and etc, etc. etc. I am sorry that some of you are unhappy, but I assume that in a free market, if enough people with enough money want units that are "better than a Lance" then somebody will make and sell those units and you folks will buy those new Rolls Royce campers and you will be happy. That would be great and I hope that somebody starts making campers to your satisfaction as soon as possible. But I don't want to see any state or federal rules or regulations adopted that would cause ALL campers to become even more expensive than they already are. Bottom line - like everything, "buyer beware". If you get burned, go elsewhere for your next purchase. If you are happy, all the better. Happy Camping!

RE: Financing

Bank of America RV financing (based out of Florida I believe) will finance Truck Campers. Fair rates, no hassle. Happy Camping

RE: TC Pass thru window

I have never understood the value of the slider window. Some have suggested that the best use is to have the "little woman" ride in the camper and then every half hour or so she can pass you a cold frosty beer while you keep on trucking. But I think there are a few issues with that suggestion, including the fact that I have an extended cab and would have trouble reaching back to the window to take the beer out of her hands. Happy Camping!

RE: How many have Solar? Is it really needed?

Sleepy, your thought is my thought. I just returned from a trip to Yellowstone and Mt. Rushmore and N. Dakota. We slept in the camper for 25 nights in a row. We cooked our own food with no restaurant or fast food meals for 25 days in a row. We used our solar panel but never needed to fire up the Honda 2000. We used a fair amount of gasoline on our 4000 mile trip, but to be honest it was a heck of a lot cheaper than staying home, where we typically go out to a restaurant two or three times a week. Camping is not free, but compared to typical living in the big city, it is a steal. Happy Camping!

RE: How many have Solar? Is it really needed?

I boondock 100% and use very little power. My 140 watt Shell / Siemens solar panel keeps my Group 31 Lifeline AGM battery fully charged even here in the rainy part of the country. I never use 110 watt appliances and I carry a small inverter to charge my camera batteries, laptop and cell phone. For me, solar is perfect because it is quiet and - once you pay for the installation - it is free. If you need 110 for AC or blender or microwave or hairdryer or whatever, don't waste your time with solar unless you have some serious multi-battery capacity and even then a generator is probably going to work better for you. Happy Camping.

RE: northern light Norcold Refrigerator problem

It sounds to me like your refer is working normally. They don't do well in extremely hot or humid climates. Do the gallon milk jug test as suggested above, with water in freezer and refer. From your post I assume you are running refer on LP and not on DC? DC is worthless. Are you working with a Norcold factory repair center, or a camper repair shop? Not clear from your post. I would visit a Norcold factory repair center before doing anything else. Happy Camping!

RE: GrumpiJacs - on shore power?

There was a similar thread a week or two ago. For what it's worth, my Lance owner manual says the battery must be connected to use jacks.

RE: Lance Speaker Removal

Are you in Vancouver (Canada) or Vancouver (Washington USA)? If you are in Vancouver (Washington USA) take your camper to Car Toys in Jantzen Beach and they will check your speaker wires for free and offer suggestions. My Lance was pre-wired for stereo and the Car Toys folks did a fantastic job of installing speakers and a high end stereo system. I have no connection with any of these folks. Happy Camping!

RE: Are batteries required?

Owner's manual for my Lance says battery must be installed and charged to use electric jacks. Same principle I think.

RE: Need help finding a flat panel TV

If you are using an inverter in a cabinet to power a TV and/or DVD, check out the true sine wave solid state inverters that are available through the various solar-electric companies (Arizona Wind Sun, RV Solar Electric, etc.). Most do not have fans, are perfectly quiet, and are very efficient. Cost around 175.00 for unit large enough to run TV and accessory units. We went through 3 of the cheap "modified sine wave" units before stumbling onto these. The absence of a fan is very nice (quiet) and there is no interference with other electronic devices in the camper. Happy Camping.
