RE: Post Your 'B' Sightings Here

That doesn't look like a 61 VW to me. Newer than that. A 61 is a splity (split front windshield) The VW shown looks like a loaf, a second generation bus. karl

RE: Wrecked my RV today - how much to rebuild the cab?

mikeak wrote:You can argue reasons why a unit (car / RV) should be valued higher than estimate value in cases of totaled vehicles. The best way to do this would be to save all receipts, pictures etc My insurer (AARP/Hartford) will allow an adjustment in the policy limits if the policy holder feels the RV has a higher value than average resale. That will allow the insurer to know if improvements have been made to the vehicle that will add to the value in case of a total loss. And, I suspect, this also raises the annual premium a bit too. I also doubt that having receipts, etc will influence the insurer much in the case of a total loss. They usually pretty much play hardball at settlement time. karl

RE: Old Motorhome, Loose Wall Fasteners

I coat the screws with Gorilla Glue before inserting. The glue expands to a foam before setting up. This should also apply enough material behind the panel for the screw to stay put. I do this often when wood screws strip out and have had good luck with the results. karl.

The new owners of Bigfoot seem to have stopped building motorhomes.

RE: Surge Guard

I've been camping for years and personally never have had a problem with damage to our rig. However I've seen plenty of examples of flaky campground wiring, incidences where AC and neutral were swapped, missing grounds and in one case, a smoking pedestal box. I do use one of those 3 light plug in thingy's that checks for ground and proper AC connections before I plug in. I don't have a surge protector, but use mostly 12 volt devices even when hooked to shore power. I think with a newer rig with sensitive electronics, a $200 protector might be worth the money just for the peace of mind. karl

RE: Anyone using a tankless water heater?

I remember that phred fellow who wrote the Poop Sheets for the Escapees newsletters had a heat on demand water heater in his rig and liked it a lot. I think those Poop sheets are still kicking around the internet so you might try to dig that one up. I also remember he had a collection device in the bathroom connected to his fresh water tank so he could run water through the shower head until it got hot without wasting any water. I used to enjoy reading those Poop sheets. I wonder if phred is still around. karl

RE: fixing Roadtrek Runners

Just keep in mind that a lot of the nylon pieces on the curtain tape will not mate up with the older tracks. Also, stitches in the pleats in the curtains have to be removed in order to sew in the new tape. Our tape fell apart and some of the track runners had broken. I ended up having to install new tracks along with sewing new tape on the curtains. karl

RE: water pump keeps running

Recently, when my pump kept running, I had to replace the pump. It would pump water through the faucet okay but never stop running. It looked like the rubber parts in the pump head were shot. However, this came about gradually....the pump taking longer and longer to shut off. I think you should make sure the valves were set properly before condemning the pump. If you're handy, you can save a few bucks by just replacing the pump head. A relatively simple operation. karl

RE: 3 way refrigerator E150

I smell a disaster in the making here. Installing a propane powered refrigerator should not be taken lightly. Most of the popular fridges come with detailed installation instructions and these can be downloaded from the internet. If these instructions are not followed carefully, you could be into real trouble. I suggest you get some education before you start cutting holes. karl

RE: CO Detector/Tragedy

Booster: Thanks for the detailed explanation. It never occurred to me that the blower would have two impellers, one for the combustion camber and another for heated air circulation. Of course, I've often walked by the furnace outlet when the furnace was operating but never paid much attention to what was causing the hot air to blow out Now I assume the blower motor shaft must pass through the side of the combustion chamber into the heat duct. How is this sealed to prevent combustion gasses from blowing by the blower shaft? Or do they just rely on the pressure differential to keep the combustion gasses from flowing from the combustion chamber into the heat duct? That seems to be what you are saying in your explanation. Thanx again. karl

RE: CO Detector/Tragedy

Booster wrote: The appliances were burning cleanly, so the CO detector didn't go off, but it clearly wasn't safe. I'm a bit confused here. Isn't CO a product of the combustion process? What difference would it make if the appliance was burning cleanly or not? I would think if the combustion chamber was leaking, it wouldn't matter where the fan was located, it would still pull (or push) combustion gasses into the duct work. And, wouldn't the negative pressure generated by the blower just suck the combustion gasses out of the combustion chamber, into the duct work? Please enlighten. And, I would have to agree on one point. RV fridge installers don't seem to do a good job sealing around the fridge cabinet. Especially if it has to be pulled out for some reason. karl

RE: 6 volt vs 12 volt batteriew

I think the poster has to determine how much battery capacity they are comfortable with. If they occasionally deplete their present battery below 50% or 12.2 volts, then additional capacity may be warranted. A single type 27 battery will give you about 100 amp hours. Two 6 volt batteries will give you 220 amp hours. 6 volt batteries usually are taller but have a smaller footprint than two type 27 batteries. So, I guess the important thing to consider is, if more capacity is needed, do you have the space to conveniently mount them? I've also been told that 6 volt batteries designed for golf carts have noticeably thicker plates, to accommodate the higher vibrations associated with golf cart applications. I personally have had long and reliable service from my 6 volt batteries. karl

RE: Purchasing a RoadTrek

Mr. Roadtrek wrote: To rathburng, and anyone else. what ever you do, do not try and sneak a Class B by your Home Owners Assn. It is an RV, and chances are some busy body will complain, and you may be forced to store it elsewhere. Get approval first, and get it in writing. I respectfully disagree. I suggest you read your homeowners agreement over carefully and see what it actually restricts. Then take a turn around your neighborhood and see what people are actually doing. Maybe this is a gray area and people are allowed to informally bend the rules. Asking for a written statement might blow the whistle on others that are quietly storing their rigs on their property. You won't win any popularity contest if that happens. And, lets face it: Most of these rules are setup to keep big and perhaps poorly maintained RVs from cluttering up the neighborhood. I have difficulty seeing a late model Class B in that role. And lastly, I've found it's a lot harder getting permission than getting forgiveness. karl

RE: Arizona state parks--how to get a campsite?

We stay in California and Arizona State Parks in February and March. Usually there is no trouble finding a spot in an Arizona park at the beginning of the week as most parks gradually fill up as the weekend approaches. We've found the best time to arrive is Sunday afternoon as the weekend crowd heads for home. Of course, if you want to be in one of the more popular parks during spring break...well, then all bets are off. Our experience has been, you don't want to be in one of those parks during spring break anyway. Now, California parks are another story. Many parks are booked solid with reservations most weekends so if you do enter a park during the week, you likely will have to leave on Friday. karl

RE: Leaks and Vents

My Xplorer has a range hood over the stove. Is water getting in through the vent? Also, there is a lot going on in the area below the windshield. Usually that is the entry point for the air that enters the van. Also, the well below the window usually contains the windshield wiper motor and it's linkage. I've seen the drain holes in this area plug up and cause problems. Might be a good idea to flood the area with a hose and see if it drains properly. And I've also had a windshield seal go bad and cause leaks around the firewall. Good luck. You need "the gift" to find and fix water leaks. karl

RE: Any photos of the NEW Roadtrek SS Ideal?

Gene: I was thinking in the line of wanting to pull into a Walmart for a couple hours of shuteye and having to contend with getting some bikes or a carrier out of the way before deploying the slide. And with the slide emerging from the open rear doors as shown, it sure doesn't look like you're just parking. I can just see this happening. "Gee Honey, I just ran the slide out and forgot the bikes were back there". However, I agree....it would probably work fine in a campground setting. karl
