RE: Keep or Toss A/C w/ Freon Loss?

Hi,
I found a leak in a friend's air conditioner, it was the tiny lines that go from the high pressure outside coil to the low pressure inside coil. I found the leak, installed a low pressure fitting, and then repaired it, evacuated the air and moisture from the system, all in about 4 hours.
The local shop rate in California is $86 an hour + 20 truck equipment fee, $35 for torch and evacuation equipment, $15 for materials, $56 for freon.
Can't you buy a new unit for that much money? I only charged my friend $100 - and only because they gave it to me. I really would have done it for free.
To charge a unit in the middle of winter, here is what you do. Use a lot of cardboard to block off most of the outdoor unit until very little air goes past it. When the output air temperature is around 85F, then you have plenty blocked off. Then recharge to the normal pressures.
I charged on in the rain in Chicago once when it was 60, and was not going to be back to check the freon level - ever! The owners reported it worked great over the next two summers.
Good Luck,
Fred.
LOL! I was told to put an heater in front of evap to stimulate the hot conditions. Never thought about the cardboard trick. The carboard sounds a better idea and less work too....

RE: Keep or Toss A/C w/ Freon Loss?

1. The unit is old.
2. Yes, the copper tubing can be welded and filled with R22 and mineral oil (needs tested tho), if need to, and then crimped the tube ends. The aluminum tubing, no.
3. Yes, they are right about filling unit correctly when it's too cold. It's the same reason why the heat pumps will not work correctly below 40 degrees.
4. However, if there's an tech sheet avail of the amount of refrigerant that the manufacturer filled it with. Then they can fill it to the manufacturer amount. (highly not possible tho).

RE: How big should my bottle jack be?

Ton = over 2,000 #'s
10,000#'s per rear side = 5 ton
I would go with 12 plus ton jack, as you would be picking up 1 corner plus more. Usually, you would want 1 and a half times of that for good safety reasons. So, an 12 ton for good measure. Especially, if you under that MH, doing things. BUT, I wouldn't use an bottle jack when under it tho. JMHO.

RE: Thinking of selling my coach...Am I stupid?

Well, are you trying to keep up with the Joneses or are o.k. financially to take on the extra payment when you can do more without it? If it ain't broke, why go for one you might have to put money and time into? Darned! I just heard the stock market is taking our retirement funds down again... I need that money for the payments of the motorhome! We cannot predict the future very much but, we can help protect our investments we somewhat have now... See the picture I'm drawing?
Realistically, I have heard times are still getting harder. Government says we are out of the recession but, why are people still losing jobs??? Just tonight, I heard that Calif, is going to be in the hole again by ONLY $14 billion next year. That's more then this last time, and they wanted to raise taxes then... Is it the real thing or, all talks? You decide if that motorhome is worth it yet...I'll put my money into my mattress till things roll over...

RE: Norton Anti Virus Software has gone mad!!!

I don't even use any antivirus now... I use alot safer method below...
Only thing is that you have to manually save what you want to save to real hardrive or flash drive. Every time you reboot, it automatically clean "EVERYTHING YOU DID SINCE LAST REBOOT!" on the virtual drive. Get the free 2008 version, not the paid 2010 version!

What is Returnil Virtual System?
The Returnil Virtual System 2008 is a powerful virtualization technology that completely mirrors your actual computer setup and it can create a virtual storage disk within your PC where you can save documents, data, and files while using the System Protection feature. Returnil Virtual System's protection concept is very easy to understand. It provides a simple, effective, and smart way to prevent unwanted or malicious changes from being made to your supported Windows® Operating System and the drive where Windows® is installed. You operate your system in a virtual environment, so anything you do will happen in the virtual environment, not in the real PC. If your computer is attacked or gets infected with Malware, all you need to do is simply reboot the PC to erase all changes. Once restarted, your system will be restored to the original state, as if nothing ever happened! Meanwhile, Returnil Virtual System can create a virtual storage disk for you; the purpose of this partition is to provide a place for you to save your data when the Virtual System Protection mode is turned ON, and you can customize the size of this disk to meet your individual requirements. When the Virtual System Protection is OFF, you can install or remove programs, save documents within the Windows® disk drive, install security upgrades and software patches, alter configurations, and update user accounts. All changes made will remain following a restart of the computer. The Returnil Virtual System is designed to take the risk and worry out of exposing your computer to all types of software, downloads, websites, or anything else that might have adverse effects on your computer or infect it with harmful viruses, spyware and other malicious programs. Once you restart your system it will revert back to its original state and all changes to your primary partition will disappear. All of this without sacrificing computer performance or usability while helping to reduce technical support intervention and the need for routine maintenance. By cloning your system in memory rather than on your hard disk, the Returnil Virtual System offers better speed and reliability than other virtualization solutions. By rebooting your PC, Returnil will enforce and protect your system's original settings.
Features
? Eliminates consequences of on-line attacks
? Viruses, Trojans, Worms, Adware, Spyware, and unwanted content disappear with a simple reboot
? Enforces settings and protects your user’s internet privacy
? Helps reduce overall disk wear by using memory rather than HDD cloning technology
? Saves you time, money, and lost hair by maintaining or improving peak client performance
? Reduces or eliminates the need for routine disk de-fragmentation of your system partition
? Your spam filter is strong, but not infallible – Returnil will eliminate the consequences from users opening infected e-mail and/or attachments
? Leaves absolutely no traces of computer activities – for those who maintain computer labs or Internet cafes, Returnil is the tool that will get you home early for a change!

RE: Upgrade Win XP to Win 7

Remember when MS started that migration thing back with win98 to xp? Do not see it now.... For the same reasons, by the way... Plus, some third party softwares started redoing their's wares and charge just under the full charge of the software for the updated one. I think I said that right...

RE: All those "extended vehicle warranty" commercials!!!

I wouldn't buy an extended warranty for any product; period. A friend who worked for Sears once told me the they are the best money maker the company sells. If I can't afford to pay for repairs as needed, then I can't afford the product.
Same here! I go the extra mile and asked them, didn't they make the product right? As there's an manufacturer warranty normally.

RE: Roof AC not working

Nope. You most likely need an starter capacitor for that middle unit. It was trying to draw more current then usual which, probably is why the breaker was tripped at that time and not when the others are doing o.k.

RE: Where do we stay? Feeling Overwhelmed by choices

Without looking at the map, just put your finger somewhere on it and go that way. Just have a 2nd and 3rd choice if possible. If all else fails, then do not forget that is a fully contained rv for any side of road or parking lot emergency stays if it happens that way. I do like the others here. Just go! Most of the adventures is when you find things that you do not plan for... And we are not kidding!

I would put them on silence tone on the cell phone. That way you can say ooopsie when they try to call you for help, etc, when you did not hear it. You should show them this forum and this thread. A lot of us have been there and done that!

No reservations: Calif. parks not taking sign-ups

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Campers hoping to stay at most California state parks this spring will have to take a chance they'll get a spot.
The state Department of Parks and Recreation said Tuesday that it will only take reservations at 23 of its 123 campgrounds. Spokesman Roy Stearns says for the rest of the parks, spots will be on a first-come, first-serve basis in March and April.
The Legislature and governor cut $14.2 million from the park budget this summer to help deal with the state's financial crisis. At the time, Schwarzenegger said as many as 100 parks would close.
The governor's office announced last week that all 279 parks would remain open but would have reduced maintance, delay their equipment purchases, and many will have reduced hours and days of operation.
Oh boy!

RE: How many cats is too many?

Just wait till they start going from window to window when critters/wildlife in the middle of the night gets going. Our bed is like an freeway some times when they try to watch out those windows. And we only have 2 cats. Then they think that the critters are coming into the RV to steal their's food, etc. Then, the birds gets on the roof of Rv, and the cats start to climb into the upper cabinets to get to the birds someway. It's hilarious sometimes.

RE: Dometic AC help please

I'll third the start cap, if voltage is up to minimum required. A lot of campgrounds are notorious for low voltage. Especially when a lot of a/c's are on. Also, the only correct way to test cap is the cap tester, not the multimeter. By the time you buy the tester, you might as well forget it and buy the cheaper starting capacitor. Also if handy, you can subtitute a good capacitor for it to see if that's what the problem is or not b4 buying one. It can only be from a same size setup tho. However, if you're not familiar about the shock hazards of caps, then have someone that knows how, do the work of neutralizing them b4 changing/working with them.

RE: Air conditioner discharge

You want to redirect, not plug up a duct. They are designed to run with a certain amount of air flow over the evap coils. I have seen where you will get a block of ice because of plugging up ducts in stick homes. It's similar to dirty air filter situation, which will do the same.
