RE: Heat for a class B with no electric ?

In my little B minus... with no propane... if I have nowhere to run my handy/dandy extension cord, I use my battery bank to provide the power to use the 12v mattress pad that I found on a trucker's website. It worked like a charm last year the first time I used it when it was really cold. (I have two batteries and about 155 amp hours)

Did it look like any of these:

I have a minimally converted Sienna without a pop-top.

RE: Roadtrek and Pleasure Way comparison

Hi Mar... welcome from a fellow member of our little Yahoo site.
I think it might help if you were more specific about which PW and which RT. There are so many variations of layout and storage that there is no one answer to lots of your questions.
IMHO, they are all of such similar quality, storage, mileage... that it comes down to the one important thing... what floor plan do you want? Which one works best for you... not any of us.
You can probably find many of your answers on the company websites.

RE: The new Dodge van?

JUST PRAY YOU KEEP THE SPRINTER. Fiat is Italian for Rust!!.
The Sprinter will be replaced by the IVECO Daily, which has a 9000lb payload capacity. IVECO and Mercedes are intense rivals in the Van market in Europe. Seeing FIAT owns IVECO, its products will be underpinning a lot of new Dodge Vans and Commercials.
Sprinter will still be here, only sold by Mercedes and Freightliner rather than Dodge.
RobertRyan... do you have a link confirming the IVECO decision? The last article that I read said that the decision wasn't yet made between the IVECO or DUCATO.

So... theoretically there has been water sloshing about in there for much of the last 19 years? Yikes...

RE: The new Dodge van?

Not to be repetitious... but the same can be said about Hyundai. They too had to overcome a bumpy start to become one of the most dependable cars on the market and customer satisfaction even beats the Japanese makers regularly now. Great car for the money... The only reason that I bought the Toyota mini-van to convert rather than the Hyundai was because of the local dealers. The Hyundai dealer has the worst rep in town, while the Toyota has the best.
BUT... and it's a big 'but,' the Ducato has a not-so-good reputation when compared to Sprinter in European surveys.
on edit: (oops... I see someone beat me to the Hyundai)

RE: How much "Pink Stuff" per Gallon?

I am in North Dakota and I never put any in the tanks. Used air to clear the pipes... a bit in the drains... a bit in the water pump. A gallon of pink stuff lasted me years.

RE: The new Dodge van?

Hopefully whichever van (Ducato or Iveco) ends up over here will eventually be built over here and theoretically quality could improve.
Or is that just wishful thinking?
I suspect that the converters will stick to the Sprinter for a few more years.

I'm glad to see that you invested all the vast sums that moderators are paid into counseling that has helped you to overcome the streak of masochism required for the position.
Seriously, you've done a great job here. I'm a MOD on a professional board and it's not easy some days. I hope you stay and continue to post all your helpful advice.

RE: The new Dodge van?

Here is a repeat of my post in September when this topic was discussed before. There are some interesting links - sorry but the clickability doesn't transfer and I'm too lazy to re-do them, copy and paste isn't that hard:
I just found this article and it looks like Dodge is also looking at the Iveco Daily.
http://wot.motortrend.com/6577842/auto-n........-sourced-sprinter-replacement/index.html
From the reviews I found, it seems to fall between the very high ratings of the Sprinter (Europeans seem to love it - average 4.5 to 5 stars) and the not so great ratings of the Ducato (average 3 stars). The Iveco seems to get 3.5 to 4 stars.
Here's a British link that rates all of them:
http://www.parkers.co.uk/vans/reviews/
and another
http://www.autoweb.co.uk/new-car-review/Fiat%20Ducato%20Van%20range
Interestingly the most positive ratings on the Ducato that I found seemed to come from those with a conversion.

RE: Power Windows In Your 'B'

I LOVE the Red Green Show. I find it interesting that in ND... only 50 miles from the border, I had never heard of it. Then, I get down to winter in Arizona and it is on PBS down there.
The characters on this show remind me so much of my father's friends when I was growing up... lots of hair-brained projects with cars/boats/RVs that usually involved duct tape. :B

I would have gone Espar if I had done a more complete conversion on my minivan... this is what most of the truckers use these days. They seem to swear by them.

RE: Question about AnitFreeze

Actually I leave 5 gal in my black tank always.
Then I doubt that you are driving a B Class. We normally only have about a 10 gallon black tank. Dang thing fills up fast enough without filling it halfway before you start!! :E

RE: Question about AnitFreeze

Filling all the plumbing with antifreeze isn't only one way to winterize. As you can see, I'm in North Dakota. I used my father's system - he RVed for 50 years up here. First off, I dumped all the tanks - drained the hot water heater - and turned on the bypass. I always had the water blown out of the pipes... and put a tiny bit in all the drains and pumped about a half cup through the water pump. A gallon of anti-freeze lasted for years even when I was using it to "flush" the toilet when I was traveling in the winter.

RE: Most important thing for RV newbie to know about class C?

BTW, with respect to the "facilities," in our home we have several Japanese bidets. Those are toilet seats that use water for cleaning instead of TP. Is there such a thing for an RV? I know about portable bidets. Our plan is to not put any TP into the tank.
I'm not familiar with these, but googled it up and got the general idea. I fear that it would use more water than you might want with a smallish RV. Those tanks can fill awfully fast.
Even without that I never put TP in my black tank. I used the rule that everything that goes into the black tank must enter through my mouth. I had a small trash can that was emptied very regularly.

RE: Vaccinations R us.

Actually I had read that it was pretty much anyone over 50 years old didn't need to worry too much unless they had other health issues. I am well over that age, but have asthma, so I will likely get it. This week for the regular flu shot.
The H1N1 shot won't be available for awhile yet. The first shipments are just arriving this week in ND and will all go to health workers. Next will be pregnant women and kids. And maybe me... probably by end of month they think.
It may be tough to locate if one is just passing through.

RE: Ford Transit Van may be coming to US!

The papar said it had 1600# cargo capacity and only 6' behind the front seats, so I don't see how they could do any real kind of RV conversion, unless it was a single bed and minimal everything else.
Basically what I have in my Sienna conversion. But I have quite a bit more space both in length and width... less height though.
