RE: Ok one more HEAT question ?

I would suggest to anyone who is thinking of starting their engine to keep warm, to look around you to ensure there is no one parked beside their vehicle. We have had two occasions, parking in a Flying J, of someone starting his engine and filling our vehicle with gas fumes. Fortunately we are light sleepers and moved in the middle of the night.

Difficult to Read

Does anyone know how to remove the blue lettering on this website and how to increase the the size of the type. I am having a lot of difficulty reading the material and would hate to have to abandon it. Black letters on a white background with slightly larger letters would sure help.

RE: edisto beach/hunting island

We plan on the same route on our way to Florida. Is it possible to get a campsite at Edisto and Hunting Island without a reservation this time of year?

RE: My Canadian friends, can you please help me?

I have lived in Fredericton(about an hour away), and I can assure you it does get very cold in the winter. Saint John may be slightly less cold, but I know I would be miserable staying in an RV in the winter. I also believe that ALL campgrounds are closed for the winter. There may be a mobile home park that might let you stay there if they have space. Go for the chance to see our beautiful country up close. I would suggesthowever, that you get some other type of accomodation.

RE: Blue Ridge Parkway

Thanks for the information, so far. I did not realize that the campgrounds closed November 1st. We are leaving on October 31st, so this may not be the best time to travel. Any information on the availability of private campgrounds along the route. We are travelling from the north (I-64) and would like to take our time to enjoy the trip. Any information, as well, on the amount of time we should allow for the trip.

Blue Ridge Parkway

Going through the Blue Ridge Parkway on our way to Florida. Would appreciate receiving any advice as to campgrounds immediately before, through, and immediately after the Parkway. We are travelling in a Roadtrek 19P. Thanks

RE: weres everybody at?

At home, working on the details of a trip through the Blue Ridge Parkway, on our way to Florida for the winter. Leaving October 31st, if that weather from Calgary doesn't get here first.

Child missing after wandering from campsite.

Here is another sad campsite story from our local paper ROSS RIVER, Yukon — A search is underway in a remote, mountainous part of the northern Yukon for a two-year-old who’s been missing since Thursday. RCMP Sgt. Don Rogers said Friday the child was discovered missing around 6 p.m. Thursday, and parents and others looked until 10 p.m., when they contacted police. About 20 Mounties and search-and-rescue personnel, along with a tracking dog and an infrared-equipped helicopter were scouring the area,50 kilometres north of Ross River, a community of about 350 people about 400 kilometres north of Whitehorse. “People from the community are pitching in and trying to assist in any way they can, which we appreciate very much,” Rogers said from Whitehorse. “We’re going to do whatever we can to try to have a successful outcome for this.” The weather in the area has been cool and rainy. “Temperatures here can fluctuate quite a bit depending on where you are,” said Rogers. “It is a mountainous area.” Rogers said he did not know the sex of the child, whose family was from Kamloops, B.C., and had been camping in the region.

Curious about mileage on tires

I was just thinking today about the number of miles we should expect from OEM tires on a Class B. Ours is a 2003 Roadtrek 19P on a Chevy Chassis. How many miles did you get or do you expect to get on your original tires before you changed or have to change them. I realize there are a number of factors that affect tire wear. Just looking for a ball park average.

RE: Child hit by golf cart in campground

I stayed at that campground many years ago. Don't know if it has changed much since then. The campground has mostly seasonal sites with a few available for overnighters. The roads are narrow as in most campgrounds. One unusual thing that I saw was that many of the seasonal sites were surrounded by hedges with a small opening to get in or out. I asked how I would be expected to get into a site like that. They said, you don't we get you in. If the child was camping in one of those sites surrounded by hedges, it would be difficult to see and stop on time if someone darted out of their site and across the road. The campground is of average size and certainly not large enough to require a golf cart. Assume they were used by seasonal campers. As for the time of the accident, the sun sets here tonight at 7:52 pm, so it would definitely have been dark when the accident occurred. I am keeping watch on the condition of the child and will provide an update if one is provided by the newspaper.

RE: Campground near Fort Meyers Florida for Jan. and Feb

Indian Creek is indeed a wonderful campground. Our son phoned for a site last spring. He has been going there for a few years. He was told he would be put on the waiting list. He is still on it. I think somewhere around the 50 position now. Good luck if you can get in. I can assure you, you will enjoy this campground.

RE: When Is Everyone Headed Back Down?

Last year we left mid November and encountered a major snow and freezing rain storm between Watertown and Syracuse NY. Don't want to ever do that again. Leaving on October 31st this year. If I even see a few snowflakes, I will plan an even earlier departure for the following year.

Positive things about camping

Someone suggested that I write about the positives things while camping. Here is my list, in no particular order: Children roasting marshmallows on a campfire Drivers being alert while driving slowly through the campground The smell of bacon in the morning Parents attending interpretative programs with their children Coffee outside in the quiet of an early campground morning Rain on the roof when I am in bed The wonderful curiosity of a child watching birds, squirrels and butterflies The absolute stillness of a campground summer night Families biking along a bicycle path The contentment of a small child on a swing being gently pushed by a parent Walking along wooded trails A family gathered around a guitar singing campfire songs Stars on a clear night Pleasant and efficient campground attendants Older children happily playing with younger children Seeing reflections on a glass smooth lake Clean bathhouses A well mannered dog peeking out from under an RV A gentle breeze to sleep to at night

Child hit by golf cart in campground

Here is the story from the local paper. A five-year-old Ottawa girl struck by a golf cart at a Limoges campground over the weekend was still listed in serious condition Monday. A CHEO spokeswoman said Amelie Bornais was recovering in the hospital’s critical care ward. The collision occurred Saturday night at Kittawa Camping on Limoges Rd., east of Ottawa. Police said the girl ran in front of the golf cart and the driver couldn’t avoid her. She was transported to hospital with serious head injuries. The 39-year-old Ottawa man driving the golf cart was charged with driving with an illegal blood-alcohol level causing bodily harm and criminal negligence causing bodily harm while driving a motor vehicle.

RE: Unusual collision between 2 RV's-----both totaled

I travel that stretch of highway frequently. It is very congested all the time. I think that is the area where signs are along the highway warning of the high accident potential in that area. Vehicles still travel too fast and pass with reckless abandon. This is a difficult highway to travel on even with a vehicle without a trailer or 5th wheel behind. I can understand that type of accident happening.

RE: Campsite Pet Peeves

I am back from my camping trip early. I can tell you it is a sad statement of life when a good hard working man is treated the way I was treated. We(me and my buddies) were sitting around the fire, listening to music, swapping stories and having a few beers when this straight laced ranger showed up. He told us to quiet down because we were too loud. Now I wasn't going to let that clown intimidate me, so I stared at him for a while, then slowly got up and turned the music down. He returned my stare and said Now the Dogs. I pointed out to him that the dogs were only barking because other dogs were too. He just said Quiet the Dogs. I knew I was not going to get anywhere with this official of the park, so I gave the dogs a clout on the snout and told them to be quiet. I could hear kids crying in the campsite next door. I said to him, Why don't you stop those kids from crying instead of bothering good hard working men like us. You would not believe what he said. He said, If you were not making so much noise, those children would be asleep. Now I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I know bad parenting when I see it, and that was just bad parenting. You can't expect a political appointment to understand these things. Well right around that time Jason got up to turn the music back up. That ranger just went balistic. I didn't even have time to tell him that poor Jason lost most of his hearing attending rock concerts and he needed his music loud. He told us to break up the party immediately and leave the park early tomorrow. Now he doesn't say anything about that inconsiderate yahoo who blocks our way to the bath house. He doesn't say anything about that woman who provoked my dogs into biting her children. Oh no. He just had to spoil our camping trip. I hated to do it, but I helped my buds up and pointed them towards their camper. I didn't think until after that it would have been hilarious if they went to the wrong RV. I should have followed them with my camera. Speaking of cameras, the dummy ranger stepped in some doggy do when he left. You should have seen him pawing the ground. That would have been a picture to keep. We didn't even get to use our fireworks. Once the buddies were gone, there really was no point. If they couldn't enjoy it, why bother. Just can't do anything anymore without someone complaining. The kids decided it would be fun to race the ATVs in the dark around the campground. Their mother put a quick stop to that. She said they had enough trouble for one day. Of course, you know mothers. She was afraid they would get hurt and she would have to spend the night alone at the hospital. Well try to imagine him much I care. I have an important job and need my rest. I can't go and hang around a hospital all night. Besides the kids are 8 and 11 for gods sake. They have been riding those big machines for almost a month now. What harm could they do. Anyway we all went to bed mad last night. It didn't get any better when the little woman woke me early. I usually sleep until 2 or 3 pm when I am on vacation. I didn't appreciate her waking me up this early. She reminded me that we had to leave the park so I forgave her this time. I did get one last shot in though. I walked to the bath house just before we left. The couple behind us were sitting at their table having coffee. I gave them the old finger, with both hands, in both directions. I wanted them to know how I felt about them calling the ranger. They just stared at me. Stupid people. Why don't they just listen to their country music and mind their own business. So now I'm home with nothing to do. I suppose I could spend some time on the RV Net forum. But why bother. All we get now is sickos with social issues writing about their little insignificant pet peeves. You would think they would get a life. I know I am comfortable in my skin. I think I will just sit here in my lazy boy, have a beer....maybe 2.....maybe more and just forget about those whiners and complainers for a while, at least.

RE: Campsite Pet Peeves

Finally arrived at the perfect campsite. Have to hurry to get the ATVs and bikes out for the kids so I don't have them around while we are here. Anxious to try the the new speakers I got. I prefer AC/DC myself, but I suppose I will have to play some rap music for the kids later on tonight. They like it loud too. The bath house is not too far away. Just have to go through the next campsite and I am there. The kids have been there already. They said the RV was placed across the campsite so it is hard to get around it. Some people. The man shouted something at them as they went by but they just ignored him. In any event, I wont have to go there very often. The bushes beside my RV will do for me. Why don't grouches just stay home if they want to complain all the time. The last camper on this site was very nice. He left a lot of garbage in the fire ring. All I have to do is cut off a bunch of branches from the trees and I will have a rip roaring fire going in no time. Have to get lots so it will last well into the night. Saves a pile of money when I don't have to buy that wood from the camp store. I'll get started as soon as I finish a beer or two.....or maybe three. The guys are coming over tonight. Hope I have enough beer. I will have to try to remember to check later today to see what is left. It disappears very fast lately. Maybe someone is sneaking in here and stealing some. Should bring the cooler closer to my chair......later after I finish a beer or two. The little woman has to go into town later anyway to get some fireworks for the kids. They really enjoy them. We wait until everyone is asleep at night and then throw firecrackers under RVs. You should see those suckers come running out of their RVs. It is so funny. The guys hoot and holler like you wouldn't believe. It will be a great nite. We do have to be careful though. We don't want to go around the guys RVs. It might wake their nagging wives up and we will have more whining. The next thing you know they will want us to get up early in the morning and do some of that togetherness thing with the kids. Probably play some stupid game. Isn't that what the little woman is for? They don't have important stressful jobs like us. Why can't they just do their work and let us relax and enjoy our vacation. Women can be a real pain when you are trying to enjoy your buddies. The rotweilers don't seem to be around. They are still barking so they can't be too far away. Now what does that woman want? Come on lady, my dogs are all bark and no bite. I have had them two years and they have never bitten me. Geez, now I will have a visit from the ranger. Why do these people sweat the little stuff? I know, I will tell him we will get leashes when my little woman goes into town. She can get the cheapest ones she can find. It will meet the requirements of the law, and if the dogs break them and get away again, it will not be my fault, would it? Don't know why people just don't stay home if they don't like dogs. Are we going to have a law for everything? Why are the old couple across the street pointing and hollering at me? You would think they would stop coughing and hacking long enough to speak politely. They are probably the type of people who want to make an issue out of the smoke from my fire. Don't know what they have to complain about, they have their oxygen tanks with them all the time. How could a little smoke bother them. Why don't they just stay home if they can't take the camping life style? Finally some peace and quiet. The kids have disappeared, the little woman is busy cooking, got my favorite beer, the music is sounding great with the new speakers. Ahhhhhh. Just settle back and enjoy the great outdoors. Now, you know, if there was only some way to stop those whiners and complainers from making life difficult for an honest working man, life would be perfect. Oh well, don't sweat the little stuff. Turn the music up some more and have another beer. Ain't no way they are going to ruin my vacation. No sir.

RE: Campsite Pet Peeves

What has not been explored in this thread is that most people do not have a problem with dogs; children playing; campfires; or even people crossing through their sites. Where it becomes a problem is when these activities go to the extreme. Your dog barking occasionally as another dog passes your site is expected. Your dog barking continuously night and day can be very irritating. Your dog leaves a mess on your site and you step in it - no problem. Your dog leaves a mess on my site and I step on it - I wouldn't like that a bit. Children playing games on their campsite or in designated play areas - no problem. Children playing in areas that disturb other campers or damage their vehicles - difficult to accept. Reasonably sized campfires built with well seasoned wood - never a problem. Campfires built with garbage or freshly broken tree limbs where heavy smoke travels throughout the campground - yes a problem. Consider those with respiratory problems who may have to sit inside their RVs with windows closed and air conditioners on(if they have it)and not being able to go outside. Sitting around the campfire quietly talking at any hour of the night - never an issue. However your voice and your music travel quite well in the evening. You do not have to shout or turn your volume up. When you become loud or rowdy then it is a problem for the many campers around you. Consider the young couple trying to get their excited children settled in for the night. Even if you can stay up until 2:00 am and sleep in until noon the next day, it is very unlikely that a responsible parent would be able to do likewise. Children are always up early and need to be cared for. Responsible recreational biking is good exercise and enjoyable. Madly bike racing recklessly on narrow campground roads is a danger particularly to those with hearing problems or small children who are often unpredictable in their movements. Campgrounds often do not have stop signs and vehicles frequently do not stop when they should. Racing bikers would never have the time to react should something unexpected happen. Crossing my site in an area as far removed from my RV as possible and doing it quietly, I can accept that. When we are having a meal or trying to rest and you noisily travel within a foot of my RV, and do it frequently, I do and will object. I would even accept you traveling close to my dinner table if you bring the wine and a good dessert. As one person said on this thread, it is impossible to have the quiet peaceful camping experience that some of us would like. We understand that. What most campers would like is to have all campers realize that they are not alone in the universe. They should make an effort to coexist with their fellow campers. That is very little to ask for. Now bring on the flamers who can defend any irrational activity they participate in. I am used to that too.
