Winnebago Adventurer 35z, comments about FRED?

I am definitely biased toward Winnebago, but I have a very open mind (open to Tiffin and Newmar and that's about it). We were at Hershey and I was very, very impressed with the Adventurer 35z (bunk option). It's a big number for a puller ($180k with the FRED, MSRP) but really worked as a floor plan, for us. We're planning to go to Yellowstone next summer 2 girls (10 & 12), two grandparents, my wife, the poodle, and I. The capacities of this coach were more than acceptable, as well as the layout. Winnie brought a Workhorse to the show in silver something paint (which really made it stand out IMHO), but for the money I'd like to get a Fred. What's comparable equipment and capacity wise from Tiffin or Newmar - (pushers ok too)? How have people made out with the FRED in the real world? Reviews? Opinions? What would be a good (no trade) offer for the 35z? Jim

RE: Do you need to change

A good rule of thumb is to change the air when you re-pack the muffler bearings. Jim

RE: Sailing the Chesapeake in a Class A Motorhome - 2 problems

The toll attendant "asked" if Propane was off going North. Not a word going South. It was off both times, of course. They used to check you IIRC. Jim

Sailing the Chesapeake in a Class A Motorhome - 2 problems

Anyone else cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel today? We went through today coming back to Philly from Cape Hatteras.... What a ride. We went through a nasty cell(s) that unrolled my awning and nearly rolled us over. It must have been gusting over 60. It unrolled the back part a couple feet, then rolled back up after I got us stopped. We were going about 15 to 20 mph through the really bad stuff when the fit hit the shan. Every couple miles they have a pull off, so I got to it and waited for it to slow down, to go out and check things out. DW says she was watching it from the window blowing up like a parachute. When I went out, the rear arm was fine, tight, but not locked up, although the front wouldn't budge from the sidewall of the MH. I put a bungee around it and set sail. Fast Forward... About 2 hours later, a guy in a pick up is beeping and pointing along side. Yep, the step was out. Any one else ever have a step open itself? I always look before I pull out, but I was a little flummoxed after the bit with the awning, I very well could have missed it. Anyone ever have water cause the step to malfunction? There was so much rain all day, and I've never had a problem with the step, ever. I stopped and it would not go up, so I got out the boogie board as a creeper and disconnected the step from the motor, through a bungee on it and found a Lowe's a mile away so I could buy a ratchet strap for it (more secure). I'll test it later, Any input on the step problem is appreciated, and comments on the awning?

RE: It goes both ways, I guess

Gale, I did plenty of camping, you know "camping!". At this point in my life, (Just turned 39 today) I'm traveling and trying to educate my kids, show them what I can before me and DW are total dorks (in their pre-teen minds). With a little investment (hah!) in a class a we've been able to go a lot. I think, reasonably more than any one would want to go in a tent. Did the tent thing - Loved it, would do it again in a heartbeat, but Not what I'm trying to do now. Just like you... Gas, nap, shower, dump, eat, gas, sleep, gas again, eat, repeat...

It goes both ways, I guess

Spent the weekend at French Creek State Park in Pa (1 hour west of Philly). Great campground, hiked about 10 miles with the kids geocaching. It's very primitive, tough to get a pet site and electric, but we only booked a couple weeks ago and got a site on c-loop that allowed pets, but no hookups. So what, dry camp, no biggie. The place was loaded with tents, pop-ups, trailers, and a few class c's (I mean a few, like 4 or 5). I saw a Winnie Brave (same vintage as my adventurer) on the entrance road while out for a walk, that was it for class a's. MY GOD! the attitude from the few people I spoke to... "That's not camping".... "Roughing it?" that kind of nonsense. And I got one of those reactions from a guy I gave some firewood to, who was next to us in a tent with his wife and kids. We only ran the generator for about an hour to charge up at about 9 am. And we weren't the one's singing until 1 am... you know who you are. Our kid's weren't screaming outside at 7:30am because they were bored. For those of you who have been turned away from high end Class A resorts because your rigs weren't new enough. Let me tell you... It works both ways. I wasn't turned away, it's state land... they can't. I can tell you, I was not welcomed by the crowd there because my 13 year old motorhome (worth what... 20k?) makes me an ugly American, a gas guzzling luxo- load. Just because I don't have a Subaru (anymore) and a bike or kayak on the roof doesn't make a state park less mine than yours. By the way.. I had bikes on the back of the rig, but we just hiked, a lot. And saw some great programs from the park rangers. Let's hope all of our states, who have run themselves into the ground financially, can keep the parks open. Jim

RE: jponder what is a throttle cable?

First weekend out.... the "accelerator pedal cable" (the one connected to my foot) broke getting off I80 in the Poconos in Pa. Loads of weekend traffic, so I coasted (downhill luckily) onto the shoulder, and removed the p30 doghouse. We were only 7 or 8 miles from Otter Lake cg. I asked DW for the dog's leash and clipped it onto the TBI. Wouldn't want to throttle/drive by hand if unless I had to. Jim

RE: Hershey, Philadelphia, Lancaster, Help

Check out Old Mill Stream. It's part of Dutch Wonderland, great park for kids. If you drive a little East on Route 30, you can catch local train service from "SEPTA" Much cheaper Maybe 7 bucks? You're probably 20 or 30 minutes from the Thorndale train station. Take the R5 to 30th Street station, then take the market frankford line toward Bridge/Pratt, get off at 8th or 5th, you'll be in Olde City - Independence Hall, etc. http://www.septa.org/

RE: Mosquito Control

Absolutely Thermacell. We hunted South Carolina last September and used thermacells. Not one bite, I could see swarms of no-see-ums and mosquitoes, NOT A BITE. They give you 15' x 15' area - bug free. wear it on your belt, or put it on the picnic table. It works, go to Cabelas.

RE: chevrolet 2500 HD overheating

This is from left field. A bad cat or exhaust resriction would take a while to present these symptoms, and wouldn't show up unless you were under load. Just looking at the problem from the other end... where the heat comes out. Check out all of the other suggestions first, but it's worth considering. I don't have experience with "your truck" but found this to be the culprit in an older c3500 454 with similar symptoms. Let us know. Jim

kidfriend54 said: Now my DH is saying a few choice words trying to get to the bolts that hold the TV to the metal framework. Any tips? That is why you should take a good look at the safety of a coach. Seriously... who besides Winnebago (only because my experience is limited to a handful of manufacturers) BOLTS in the appliances? How many rv refers are held in by the screws on the front trim?

RE: HOT blew open relief on H/W heater with motor aid, 454 TBI

I didn't think this was relevant, but.... Right when I arrived at Fort Wilderness last Saturday, again, hot as hell out. There was a nasty leak from the cheap plastic Atwood drain plug in the HW heater. I tried to tighten it and it broke, and leaked all over me. I got the old plug out and went to the camp store... nothing. I always thought I should carry a spare plug, oh well. Went to the front desk and they gave me a list of repair/detail outfits approved to enter FW. I studied the list and called Frank's mobile RV repair. I told him it was no big deal, since I just bypassed the hw heater for now, but if he would be in the cg in the next couple days, I'd gladly buy the part fom him. He was there in an hour and wouldn't take more than $20 for an anode type plug. What a guy. When I find his phone number I'll post it in destinations, etc. But I digress... The valve wouldn't close yesterday until everything cooled down. I had just emptied it, put in the new plug/anode, and it worked flawlessly all week, no leaks, no problems.

HOT blew open relief on H/W heater with motor aid, 454 TBI

We were running pretty hard back from Disney to Philly, stopped last night about 8 pm @ Yogi Bear in Emporia, VA. The relief valve was open on the Hot water heater, from the motor aid. The engine temp never got really, really hot... over the 210 degree straight up and down point, but under the red zone. Pretty normal (to me/this coach). The 1995 P30 chevy 454 TBI has never overheated, or given me any trouble. But I've noticed it runs much stronger cooler. Should I change the engine thermostat? Will it hurt mileage? What temp should I install? Thanks, Jim

RE: Which one to buy Winnebago or Fleetwood ?

My biggest consideration was safety. I was sold on Winnebago's steel cage in the driver's compartment, fiberglass roof, and all appliances are bolted in, in case of a crash. A refrigerator is a 200 pound missile in a wreck. I believe bounder's of that era had a rubber roof made of wood. While some Winnebago's of that era had serious delamination issues. I'm on my 3rd Winnebago, so I am biased. Rattles, wind noise, and creaking (when going in or out of a gas station or driveway, one corner at a time) Will tell you which coach is best. But if the floorplan and condition aren't there... walk.

RE: Vandalism... again

Lyman wrote: "You called 911 for graffiti? Ought to be ashamed of yourself. Grafitti is NOT an emergency. If you want to stop having grafitti on your motorhome, move it to a guarded site for storage. Costs more, but a person on-site is the best deterrent." Lyman, Thanks for the holier than thou reprimand. In Philadelphia, you have to call 911 for any type of offense, report or situation. A few years ago, one of my employees had one of my company cars stolen from in front of his house. When he called me, I called the district, the officer told me to drive to my employees house, stand where the car was and call 911. That's how it's done, welcome to Philadelphia. I also said, I called the Captain, who sent the officer over as a personal favor to me. I don't fault the guys/gals in uniform for following procedures. Imagine how difficult it is for them to work in such a clumsy, bloated, inefficient bureaucracy every day ... I imagine they get frustrated too. As for storage, It usually is kept in a locked yard with no issues, We're packing for a trip, and the first time it happened I was waxing/detailing it for 3 days. Thanks to those of you with the suggestions and empathy.

Ob1quixote, right on. nuff said. hotrod4x5, right in front of the house, but only in the summer, travel time. We both work, so we need to jump in and go, but need access to pack, wash, wax etc. during the "season" I 'll have to move to change this.

Vandalism... again

This is the second time in 10 days. HUH? I was away on business when my wife found silver "sharpie" graffiti on the moho a week and a half ago. She called me and I said "Call the cops!" She called them, told them the situation (911), .... "you'll get a call back" Which I was fine with, I didn't know the extent of the problem, but wanted a police report. Get this... When she got the call from the Philadelphia Police Department Headquarters (the roundhouse).... "What does it say?", asks (axes) Philly's finest "I can't read it," DW "Is it racial, or hateful" PF "I can't read it, my property is vandalized, I want a report in case we need to claim the damage on our insurance", DW I will leave it there for now, but... They detective wanted to know (in a nutshell) if it was a hate crime, were we part of some "class" or minority. Fair enough, Hate crimes should be a priority. No police report, "take a picture and turn it in to your insurance..." thanks. (I got it off with a lil elbow grease) fast forward.... We are leaving for disney tomorrow afternoon. Last night, before I get home from work, DW calls... got us again. HUH? Black Marker, been out there all night, can't get it off. It's much better, maybe only I can see it. I called the captain of our district last night, he sent an officer over (as a personal favor) to write a vandalism report. (asked me for a dollar value for the damage, I basically laughed in his face, sorry, I digress). While compounding the******out of it for hours tonight, had no less than 25 people stop to ask what happened, and half told me how it has happened to them too "since summer started" Any really demented security ideas from you guys.... If I wait for them, and catch them, I'm going to jail for a while. DW won't let me out because she knows... We're out of here tomorrow for a week or so, but I don't think I'll calm down ever. Sorry if that was a rant.

RE: Workhorse P32 chassis front spring problems

I have a 96 adventurer on a p-30, 16,500 GVW. I replaced the front Springs and airbags with with 5900+ rating (SS268) Super Steer I also replaced the bellcrank, bushings and put Bilsteins on all four corners. It drives better than new. Well worth the grand I put into it, just for the safety benefits alone. And no more leaky airbags to deal with. I highly recommend Henderson's.
