RE: PA tolls?? rant/venting! who else? am I wrong?

You only pay going west (in my experience)
FWIW I think it's smart of them, most people would pay anything to get OUT of New Jersey.

RE: Tom Schaeffers RV Super Store in PA

I worked For Tom Schaefer, in service for about 9 months. I worked in the service department for about $13 an hour. To give you a time reference, I watched the world trade centers collapse on the TV in a used Coachmen Mirada - I'll never forget it... work stopped that day.
That being the most profound memory of my time there, I will add this.
There are/were some very capable and knowledgeable techs there, absolutely great in diagnosing and repairing house (especially)and chassis issues. BUT, things have changed. The mix of Chevy(we were working on them then), Ford, Workhorse, Freightliner, etc. is probably quite different now than then. Shaefer's WILL get your warranty work done, and done well. The service department treats/treated all trades and used units pretty scrupulously. We went over these units (new ones too) just too find whatever we could wrong.... that's how we got paid.
My extent of dealing with sales was, evaluating their recent trade ins and estimating what it would take to make them right... usually made them mad.
I guess the point is... You get what you pay for, their stuff rolls out right, assuming they still operate the same way. You can't polish a turd.
As a former Tech, I've bought 3 class a's, 2 used and 1 new. None from Schaefer's, but why pay them for work I can do myself. 88 Elandan (Media, Fairless Hills, PA), 95 Warrior (New - Media), 96 Adventurer (private - couldn't pass it up).
As a repeat customer of Media, I think I get a great deal, I've never traded anything, so there aren't any arithmetic gymnastics to swallow. Media doesn't appear as "showroomy" as Schaefer's, but for this region, I know of none better for a deal to buy than Media. Never used Media for Service (yes Winnebago's are that good). But I can say your coach will be right serviced by Schaefer's.
Afterthought, I have seen some very impressive collision work done at Schaefer's.

RE: Windshield Replacement

I would repair it. I had the same issue with my adventurer, but replaced the glass when it spidered. The repair gave me 2 years. I'm in Philly and had a very competent shop do the replacement, at my location (This was a few years ago, so I don't remember how much, but definitely reasonable).
I ordered the glass from my dealer(Media), and they picked it up, brought it to the moho and did the repair. PM me if you want the installer.

RE: Crazy battery charging idea - Will it work?

I see your logic. And it makes sense on the surface. But why bother? Granted there are advantages in keeping the engine batteries up to snuff, but you have the "bridge". It would seem the cost of the parts, and the inherent inefficiencies of going from 12v to 110v back to 12v (not to mention the solar panels, but they are owned, and sunlight is free, for now)
The engineers here can jump in, I'm sure there are issues with tying in the solar panels to all three(?) batteries, but can you tie them all together? Seems more efficient than going solar to 12v to 110v to 12v.
Someone here will be able to tell you what 90w dc (45x2) translates into 110v ac then back to 12v dc.
The timer will use more watts than you will actually get to the batteries.
You are running around the entire stadium to get to first base.

Winnebago Adventurer 35z, comments about FRED?

I am definitely biased toward Winnebago, but I have a very open mind (open to Tiffin and Newmar and that's about it).
We were at Hershey and I was very, very impressed with the Adventurer 35z (bunk option). It's a big number for a puller ($180k with the FRED, MSRP) but really worked as a floor plan, for us. We're planning to go to Yellowstone next summer 2 girls (10 & 12), two grandparents, my wife, the poodle, and I. The capacities of this coach were more than acceptable, as well as the layout. Winnie brought a Workhorse to the show in silver something paint (which really made it stand out IMHO), but for the money I'd like to get a Fred.
What's comparable equipment and capacity wise from Tiffin or Newmar - (pushers ok too)?
How have people made out with the FRED in the real world? Reviews? Opinions?
What would be a good (no trade) offer for the 35z?

RE: Do you need to change

A good rule of thumb is to change the air when you re-pack the muffler bearings.

RE: Sailing the Chesapeake in a Class A Motorhome - 2 problems

The toll attendant "asked" if Propane was off going North. Not a word going South. It was off both times, of course. They used to check you IIRC.

Sailing the Chesapeake in a Class A Motorhome - 2 problems

Anyone else cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel today?
We went through today coming back to Philly from Cape Hatteras.... What a ride. We went through a nasty cell(s) that unrolled my awning and nearly rolled us over. It must have been gusting over 60. It unrolled the back part a couple feet, then rolled back up after I got us stopped. We were going about 15 to 20 mph through the really bad stuff when the fit hit the shan. Every couple miles they have a pull off, so I got to it and waited for it to slow down, to go out and check things out. DW says she was watching it from the window blowing up like a parachute. When I went out, the rear arm was fine, tight, but not locked up, although the front wouldn't budge from the sidewall of the MH. I put a bungee around it and set sail.
Fast Forward... About 2 hours later, a guy in a pick up is beeping and pointing along side. Yep, the step was out. Any one else ever have a step open itself? I always look before I pull out, but I was a little flummoxed after the bit with the awning, I very well could have missed it. Anyone ever have water cause the step to malfunction? There was so much rain all day, and I've never had a problem with the step, ever.
I stopped and it would not go up, so I got out the boogie board as a creeper and disconnected the step from the motor, through a bungee on it and found a Lowe's a mile away so I could buy a ratchet strap for it (more secure). I'll test it later, Any input on the step problem is appreciated, and comments on the awning?
