RE: Lancaster, Pa Campgrounds

Stayed at Beacon Hill two nights this past May and would go back again IF we had a spot on the upper level. Absolutely fantastic views from up there. Sites are small, but adequate. Loved the sounds of the horses hooves as they travelled along the road below you.

RE: We need your help!

Rocky Mountain NP (Estes Park) would be my choice IF it wasn't for the crowds I'm sure are there now. That said, the Tetons (Grand Teton NP) are breath taking. We've spent hours sitting in lawn chairs at overlooks just soaking in the beauty. You will have crowds there too. Just take a deep breath and enjoy.
Hope your stay in West Yellowstone is at Grizzly. IMHO it is far and away the best around.

RE: Ted Roosevelt NP

We stayed at the North Unit CG for a full afternoon and night. Fantastic star gazing! Since we did not hike either we felt that was fine. Do take the road up to the top of the park. Nice shaded CG w/o h/u. HUGE bison meander through the CG at any time of the day.

RE: Recommendations for campgrounds in western North Dakota

If you really want to "camp" try Theodore Roosevelt NP (North Unit) campground. No h/u but it's a very nice place with great scenery and wildlife. Had a 2,000 lb bison slowly wandering through the campsite one afternoon. Had I been dumber than I am I could have reached out a window of the MH and touched him. Fortunately he decided to scratch against a nearby tree and not against us. You a near the middle of nowhere so the night shy is fantastic!

RE: bar harbor, maine

If you don't require a lot of ammenities stay in Acadia NP in either Blackwoods or Seawall campground. No h/u but gee it is camping after all. Blackwoods is close to downtown Bar Harbor and some of the sites are a short walk to the ocean with great views.

RE: Best Food in Bar Harbor ME

I'll second Thurstons in Bernard. Great food with a wonderful view of the harbor.
Ruth & Wimpy's Lobster Pound a few miles north of Ellsworth on Rt. 1 is good also.

RE: Monument Valley???

Monument Valley is a MUST see if you are anywhere near it! Try to spend two nights at Gouldings so you can have a chance for both morning and evening shots.
By all means hire a Navajo guide (can do at the CG) for a 1/2 day tour. I suggest a morning tour because of the heat and the winds tend to pick up in early afternoon and you will be eating a lot of fine red dust.
Don't miss this one!

RE: RV travel bucket

Way too many places to list individually, but here are just a few of our favorites.
ALL of the National Parks and Monuments. Grand Canyon, Canyon De Chelley, Zion, Carlsbad Caverns, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Bryce Canyon, Badlands, Acadia and Shenandoah should be at the top of any list.
Add to the above Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, Niagra Falls, Mt. Vernon, Monticello, Montpielier, Highlands, Independence Hall and Harry Truman's home.
Could go on and on, but I won't. I saw lots of other good ideas in earlier posts too. Have fun; retirement and grandchildren are great!

We stayed at Alpen Rose too and liked it. The unshaded sites are a nice size. You can watch the train go by from these.

RE: Is the north unit of Teddy Roosevelt NP worth a visit?

Spent two nights at the North unit and would recommend it if you have the time. Nice shaded CG (no h/u) with a small but interesting visitor center. Drive to the top of the park was spectatular with wonderful views and lots of bison. Didn't really need to make the drive to see the bison, however. A bull bigger than a VW rambled through the CG several times while we were there. Scratched himself by rubbing on a nearby tree and did a couple of roll overs not ten feet from the MH.
Had been to Ft. Union Trading Post NHS and the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center before this. Well worth the time to visit if you have the time. Don't get up that way often.
Did not stop by the south unit.

RE: Mt Rushmore, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Zion & Grand Canyon

To danewguy:
You don't list a toad. Without one in Yellowstone NP that time of season you will spend most of your time trying to find a parking space for the MH to see the geysers and other features up close. Rent a car for sure in W. Yellowstone. Probably a good idea in the Tetons too.
IMHO you have scheduled enough time to see what you have listed, but there are interesting stops all along the way you will miss. If you get off the interstates you go through some great little towns with really nice folks. The USA is amazing! Go for it though and enjoy.

RE: Mt Rushmore, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Zion & Grand Canyon

Wonderful idea to drop the southern parks. As said before, all you would see is your windshield.
How long will you be in DeMoines? I think the Black Hills, Yellowstone and Grand Teton are pushing it in three weeks from Miami, especially not knowing your stop over time.
Leave at least two full days in the Black Hills. Four days in Yellowstone is a bare minimum at this time due to traffic and crowds. Five would be better. Two full days minimum in the Tetons too. On the way home, stop in Cody to see the Buffalo Bill Museum (4 hours minimum). One of the best we've ever seen. A GEM!
Stay in Grizzly and rent a car (a MUST) there. Folks at Grizzly will give you the name of a local outfit (forgot name) that rents higher mileage but servicable cars at good rates. Think you can get by without a car in the Tetons.
One suggestion. DON'T RUSH! This area is too beautiful to just pass through. Enjoy!

RE: Acadia National Park looks like a nice place to visit

Acadia is great! We are 27 foot and had room for us and the toad at Blackwoods CG. Don't know about Seawall. Remember that both are dry camping with generator restrictions.

RE: Mather Campground

We love Mather. To me Trailer Village is like a Walmart with grass parking. As for your 31 foot length. We are only 27 foot and the sites we have had (don't have the numbers) were more than adequate. It's such a great CG, I say reserve as a thirty footer and take your chance. My guess is you won't have any problem. As said earlier, they won't measure you when you come in.
Mather is dry camping and it can get cool then. Don't be surprised to see some very light snow.
