RE: Alcan is 67 Today

Travelled that road in 1969, celebrated the 4th of July in Tok. Ate enough dust and dirt to last me a lifetime!
The attraction was the effect the building had on the war effort. Every civilian went to the theater every chance available to see the progress, to see what was being done to protect the US.

Cyrus as in Billy Ray Cyrus...or Rae, or whatever the spelling may be. Is not a Prevost an RV?

Slickrock Campground, Moab, Utah. Anybody been there?

Today I was doing a little painting and put on my painting shirt: very big, long Tee shirt I picked up at a church rummage sale for just this purpose. Over the left breast is a triangular emblem with a 4 wheeler in the center and Slickrock Campground Moab,Utah lettered over it. On the back is my favorite....same emblem, lots larger. Lettered around it: Works Sucks I'm Going to the Desert. So, I looked up the campground on the net. Looks like FUN! Anybody go there? Stories to share? It's along way from me. Can I experience it vicariously?

RE: Beginner Fender Benders

My heart goes out to you! I bought a little old B last spring, only 19 ft long. Twice I reversed into something, very gently. First was an apple tree at the edge of my driveway, the second was a barrier pole at work....saved the light pole! I travel alone, no spotter, but my problem was simply remembering the spare tire sticks out behind me. I put a note on my side mirror...."SPARE THERE!!". No problems since. I second the fish eye....very handy.

RE: did you take anything out? what didn't you need in the RV

I take something out after every trip. Moved from a 30 foot 5er to a 19 foot B.
At that time I knew not everything was needed or would fit, but old habits die hard! Getting ready to put the B in the garage for the winter now and really evaluating what has to stay. Food out, obviously. And some dishes, too, especially duplicate cookware. Can't wait to reverse the process in the spring. Going to be a long winter here!

RE: Do you sew?

I sew also. But as several here have noted, no longer clothing. Quilting, crafts, curtains, mending etc. It's cheaper and easier to buy clothing, with one exception. I wear scrubs at work and like a wide variety. They tend to be expensive to buy,but cheap to make. I do think sewing is a skill that everyone should have. My DS is not afraid to pick up a needle and thread and is reasonably good at repairing a blown seam etc.

RE: Old-style Stick-on States Map?

The one we used on our 5th wheel was put on clear plexiglas, then the plexiglas was mounted to the side of the 5er. Lost the unused states somewhere along the way and used paint after that. Whole thing went when the 5er did, but it was a good setup.

RE: Too chicken to winterize...UPDATE

Thanks to everyone here who encouraged/nudged/chastised me, I did ask if I could watch and take notes. No problem! Had to change the appointment however. I work nights, the shop is a half mile up the road. Normally someone picks up my vehicle, works on it and leaves it back at my house with the bill on the seat. I settle up later.
This morning I took the van up and we did it! Drained everything, blew out the lines then added pink stuff to the toilet etc. I took notes so next fall I can be comfortable on my own. I do have an air compressor, too. He also reminded me to put boards under the tires.
Thanks to everyone who let me know it was okay to ask for a tutorial.
I would never dream of asking my hairdresser to teach me to cut my own hair and therefore cause her to lose a regular customer. But he assured me that he is so busy he regularly turns away new customers. And after Christmas the shop is real short handed as he goes to Florida in his RV, leaving his just brother and one mechanic working.
Happy this is achieved, but sad the season is over.

RE: Too chicken to winterize...UPDATE

Wow, didn't mean to open a hornet's nest here. The place doing the work is a place I have dealt with and trusted since 1986. Great experienced folks. Small town USA at it's best. If they say it will be done right, it will be. Perhaps they'd even be willing to SHOW me the proper way to do things. Reading is one thing, especially with so many giving differing opinions. But seeing is better. I'm not that confident.
I can and do change tires. I can change oil, too. And check the radiator, buy and install a new battery when needed. All things I've been taught to do over the years. I worked side by side with my ex-husband when we built our house from scratch, the ground up...from levelling the footings in the basement to nailing shingles on the roof. Yes, including plumbing. It's all PVC. Point here is, I've not learned to winterize an RV and yes, a mistake can ruin something.

Too chicken to winterize...UPDATE

I've learned so much here about how to winterize, I'm pretty sure I could do it successfully myself. But I know me and I know I'd spend the winter simultaneously longing for and dreading spring to find out for sure that I did it right. And fret like a mother hen that I'd done something to ruin my beloved Cookie. So she goes in on Tuesday and for 45.00 I buy peace of mind and a guarantee that the pros will do it right. What else can I do except point due south and scoot on out of here?? LOL But seriously, thanks to everyone of you who's taken time to discuss this subject. I'm probably the only one left who is still too chicken!

RE: "Living on a fixed income "

Interesting discussion. I've always considered the phrase to apply to people living on a set amount of $$, no matter the source, as long as making more $$ is not at all possible. So if one cannot get any more $$ from their job, retirement account,SS, IRA etc, but are able to take a job (second, third) is their income really fixed? I may be on a fixed income until my next raise, but nothing stops me from picking up per diem hours at another facility. So is my income really fixed?

RE: Pet in campgrounds

Well, just for the record, my little guy yaps his brains out every night when I leave for work. He does settle down eventually, after he's found the item he's going to destroy in order to punish me! That's why he goes in his nice little crate when I leave. And he's quiet in there. I sometimes take him in the rv, but don't take the crate. The only time I've left him alone was when I had to go inside to pay for gas. Took maybe 30 seconds, and yes he yapped his brains out...hmm....little guy might not have many brains left if he keeps that up. LOL
I don't take him if I know I'm leaving rv for sightseeing etc. I'm also a poop picker upper....after 2 kids,millions of diapers....no biggie.

The ones in my house are First Alert. Haven't had any fires but they sure do go off if the oven smokes.

RE: Does The RV Make The Man/Woman?

I was at a campground recently that was populated overwhelmingly by very large 5ers and class As, most with toads. My little old B and I felt like David among many Goliaths! But, everyone I encountered was friendly. However, I do feel I got a much better site than they all did, because I did not require a pull thru. But the very nicest spots IMO were for tenters....secluded little places in the woods.
