RE: Help...no Main Power on S&S Camper

Happy to hear you solved it, and I will bookmark this thread in case I ever have a problem! My only idea was the switch next to the light switches for the battery disconnect - during camping season I use duct tape to keep it in the ON position! enjoy, Clarice edited to add - the people at S&S are great - give them a call I'm sure they'd be happy to help!

RE: Financing

To finance my TC I borrowed against my 401k. I'm paying it back at an interest rate MUCH higher than the market has paid me this last couple of years and all the interest paid is going to my account. the $125 setup fee seems reasonable when I look at all the great times I've had since moving from a tent to a TC. I probably wouldn't have made that same decision when the markets were strong and the balance increased steadily, but watching the balance dwindle I felt like I should take advantage of what I had built up before it was all gone!

RE: New Entry Door (Old one damaged during break in)

They did $1200 worth of damage to steal stuff that was probably worth $50 yeah this custom door was $1300 and thankfully the insurance paid the $180 for the TV. other than that it was all inexpensive - just annoying to have the camper trashed and so much stolen! only figured out this weekend that the butane refill can was gone!

RE: New Entry Door (Old one damaged during break in)

Mine didn't come with a microwave. One of the cabinets has AC power in it - but I only have a Honda EU1000i so I won't be adding A/C or Micro anytime soon!

RE: I went to walmart yesterday, they had the following to ..

for anyone with a Fred Meyer nearby, they've got a coupon for 2/$5 in the 8/30 paper. I'd also looked at the medium sized tanks and connectors and didn't find it cost effective for as few little tanks as we use. Matthew_B's math proves it out for me. At least Coleman is packaging them as recycleable lately...

RE: Loading/unloading TC

My TC underside is black and my spray on bed liner is also black, so when you start to load it you have no contrast and a lot of shadow to get in your way...makes it difficult to see well back there. Being a girl and all, I used hot-pink Duck Tape (that's how it's labeled Duck, not Duct!) to highlight the corners of the bathroom that stick out from the rest of the body of the camper. It only took bumping into that the first time, seeing the whole camper shake, to find a way to solve THAT! Clarice

RE: New shade mod for previous window swap

looks great to me! with both new clear windows this weekend i used neon green duct tape to hold up the curtains my step mom made for the camper - it worked but yours is WAY nicer looking!

RE: New Entry Door (Old one damaged during break in)

but the door stays unlocked so they don't wreck another door. yeah, good idea. next time I drop it off I was going to tape a laminated sign saying that it's already been cleaned out so please move to the next RV... :O

RE: New Entry Door (Old one damaged during break in)

Has anyone installed a deadbolt in addition to the regular door locking system? Capt PJ the deadbolt that is part of the new door seems pretty secure, much more so than the original door.

RE: New Entry Door (Old one damaged during break in)

I see you have your battery switch taped in the on position. :B yeah I got tired of resetting the clock on the clock-radio several times every weekend! the irony was that i forgot to turn it OFF when I dropped it off in the fall and sure enough - dead batteries. thank goodness they recharged and have held the charge!

RE: New Entry Door (Old one damaged during break in)

Thanks Chief. I didn't think of using sun reflector material - I was just going to use a couple of the extra curtains my stepmom made. But I like the idea - thanks! have a good day, Clarice

New Entry Door (Old one damaged during break in)

Happy almost Friday fellow TC'r's I'm not sure if anyone else will need a replacement door anytime soon, but thought I'd share my experience. Back in June my TC was broken into while parked in my rented covered spot at a storage place. They used a garden tool to peel back the area near the locks to get the door open, leaving the door loose in the frame, leaking air and looking terrible. not to mention bending the grab-handle to it's breaking point http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2665/3863752266_71d835b651.jpg my insurance is Traveler's and they responded right away, cutting me a check for the estimated replacement cost. the repair place received the door they ordered from the Mfg S&S, but it didn't fit. They worked with Travelers to approve ordering a custom made door (something about RV replacement parts becoming more scarce as those companies close or consolidate and lots of non-standard sizes blah blah blah). so today I finally got my new door installed - woo hoo! http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2447/3862966725_81d87d481d.jpg Because it was custom I was able to get clear glass both top & bottom, I can already see a huge difference in the amount of light when inside - it's great http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3536/3862967081_345c3bc6c7.jpg So far the only downsides are the two different keys that it came with (never thought to ask for the locks to be keyed the same!) and that my dirty dusty camper looks even dirtier now that there's a bright white door on it!! Cheers, Clarice

RE: Swapped my windows!!

I like the clear glass on the bottom, my first thought on seeing it was "Oh the dog has a window" but then appreciated being able to see the tailgaters. I'd read the swap-out threads but instead was planning to find a way to get clear glass on top while keeping on bottom. Then I got broken into and the repair shop had to order a custom door - so I asked for both pieces to be clear. I'll find out tomorrow if that happened!

RE: P/U camper insurance

I'm also in Idaho. I have my car/truck/home & umbrella policies with Travelers. The camper was added onto the car/truck policy, it looks like about $80 every 6 months. sounds like I'll have to shop that around. I'm currently getting repairs done to the camper after a break-in, it was covered by my auto policy's comprehensive coverage, $100 deductible. the LCD I'd installed myself was included in that coverage since I was able to show pictures that it was "installed". the other contents that were stolen would have required a Homeowner's claim with a $500 deductible so I didn't bother.

RE: I can't believe I actually looked at a Class C!!!!!

Not saying that in the future I won't be forced into a MH and have to join the KOA!!!!! The first can be overlooked. The latter is totally inexcusable!:B Ditto!

RE: S&S Customer service report

Preaching to the choir! Memorial Day weekend 2008 I found out my dealer had closed. two days later I had a roof leak, my camper was under warranty. I talked to S&S, mostly via email and they said to take it anywhere for repairs and they would take care of it. Reading about their good rep on these boards I didn't doubt it - but Nelson's RV wasn't as confident. I promised to pay them and deal with S&S if needed. Nelson's RV was shocked that they were given a credit card number directly by S&S so I wouldn't be inconvenienced, they'd never had a Manufacturer be so good to their customers. :^) Clarice

RE: abandoned it out west

thanks to everyone for the discussion. I don't get into situations quite like that, just regular rutted roads. I will definitely look at them with new eyes and a better understanding of the geometry of my truck & camper in relation to those roads. and thank you for the confirmation of what I've always done instinctively (despite teasing from my mate) - I reach down and go to 4WD as soon as I leave pavement - which is every trip. on the washboarded roads and not knowing what's ahead it's given me a better sense of preparedness and control. Keep up the good work everyone sharing and teaching each other! Cheers, Clarice

thanks for the report - we haven't been up there yet, we weren't quite sure what to expect so keep putting off heading to Horsethief. :^) Clarice

RE: Rules to remember (serious)...

I think I have a good sense of direction, paying attention to landmarks and such, but I still have a bluetooth GPS that talks to my Palm (loaded with both TomTom and basic tracking GPS software tools) and a SPOT www.findmespot.com unit to send out a signal if we really get into a mess. so far the SPOT has just been to send our location back to myself so I can keep track of where we have been, hopefully we will never need the HELP or 911 buttons! and we have lots of NFS maps and a compass of course. The follow up to all that - none of those do ANY good if you take off without them! last summer we went for a walk in an area that was new to us, on trails, expecting to be in sight of the camper. as we got further away I got a little nervous because I had nothing with me - just an occasional glance back at where we'd walked from so we were able to backtrack easily. won't make that mistake again!
