RE: Windows 7 GRRRRRR!

I upgraded one of my systems from XP to Win 7 via a clean install and even though I really like Win 7 and haven't encountered any problems or issues I don't plan to upgrade any of my other systems to Win 7. Any new computers I purchase going forward will definitely have Win 7 on them. Even though I like and use Win 7 I don't recommend for everyone to run out and upgrade.
BTW, I upgraded my Mac from OS X Leopard to Snow Leopard for $10 and felt ripped off as it is nothing more than a service pack that Apple had the nerve to charge for!

RE: Cradlepoint MBR 1000 or 1200

MrWizard, My daughter did in fact get the USB modem from Verizon, with the discount. She says she was told my contract does not change until I activate the new modem. If I never activate the modem, no change to the contract. I did check on line, a couple of hours ago, and I am still not restricted to 5GB. I have had the Verizon USB UM 175 modem in my possession for about two weeks.
If I understand correctly, I can buy buy a USB modem off ebay or another retail source, and activating it will not change my current policy. Is this true?
Is CS Customer Service?
Where do I find the MEID number of the new device?
Wayne
I think you are confusing your contract with your plan. You can change the modem and keep your current plan but if you want a discount on the modem you will need to sign a new 2-year contract.

RE: What's the Difference Between 32 and 64 bit Windows 7

The major difference between 32-bit and 64-bit is how much memory can be addressed. 32-bit can only address a max of 4G of RAM whereas 64-bit can address something like 4 BILLION times more memory. For applications that are designed for 64-bit they can be faster, especially apps that handle large files such as video, RAW photo images, databases, etc...
Whether you install 32-bit or 64-bit Win 7 on Bri's HP depends on what version of Vista is on it already. You can't upgrade from 32-bit Vista to 64-bit Win 7 nor can you do the upgrade from 64-bit Vista to 32-bit Win 7. Here's a link that explains how to tell if the HP is currently running 32-bit or 64-bit: 32-bit or 64-bit?
As far as your other computers that are running XP, as long as they are running and doing the job for you I wouldn't recommend upgrading them to Win 7. I upgraded one of my systems from XP to Win 7 and I like it but there isn't anything you can do in Win 7 that can't be done in XP. I'd say wait until you buy a new computer and get it with Win 7 but upgrading from XP to Win 7 isn't really worthwhile because you may have to chase down Win 7 compatible drivers for your video card, printer, etc... There may also be software you currently use on XP that may need to be upgraded or replaced. In addition, upgrading XP to Win 7 can't be done "in place" which means you have to do a full install and then re-install all of your apps.

RE: Most reliable laptops?

I've owned and used laptops from Fujitsu, IBM, Toshiba, Acer, Compaq and Dell. All of them have been good, no problems with any of them. That doesn't change the reliability ratings of any of those brands though so what's the point of all of these anecdotal stories regarding reliability of various laptops? Just because my laptop worked well for me doesn't mean it will work well for you.

RE: Ya gotta love printer mfrs!

Agree, and the next time you upgrade your windows operating system, you'll probably also need a new printer because of no driver support for you 6 month old printer. They can produce these printers faster overseas than they can write software for them.:B My son wanted a Gibson copy guitar for Christmas, I said BS on that, I bought him an original Gibson for 3 times the price, but I might have saved somebodys job in Nashville, not in China.
For Win 7, at least, it shouldn't be a problem as long as the printer has Vista drivers available since Vista drivers should be compatible with Win 7.

Ya gotta love printer mfrs!

My daughter just purchased a Canon Pixma MP250 printer from Walmart for $40. It's a bottom of the line all-in-one printer/scanner/copier and included black and color cartridges as well as the USB cable to hook it up. It does a decent job of printing which is good enough for her needs.
I checked the cost of the cartridges and they sell for $16 (black) and $21 (color) each so $37 to replace them both. If you we allow $3 for the USB cable, the printer was actually free.
In this example they are definitely following the sales strategy for razors where they give away the razor but make all the profit selling the blades.
One additional comment on this printer is that Canon must own stock in a tape mfr because they used quite a bit of tape to keep things from jostling around during shipment. There must have been at least a dozen places where they added strips of tape for shipping!

RE: Vista file search.. arg

Is it possible that the file isn't an mp3 but possibly another format such as AAC? That would certainly not be found with the search argument you used.

RE: Replacing "crashed" hardrive questions

If the old drive is still bootable or you did make good backups (hopefully a system image backup) it should be an easy matter to install the new drive and clone the old drive or restore the backup image.

RE: A Diabetic Question

If you've ever been on the Atkins diet then you've experienced Ketoacidosis as the whole point of the diet is to keep your body producing Ketones.
You can get test strips, KetoStix, to test your urine for the presence of Ketones at the pharmacy.

RE: You Know You Live in a Small Town When...

I live in a small little town in California of about 80,000 residents. By California standards, we live in the sticks and most people have never heard of it. But if my small town was located in many other states it would be as big as the State capital. We'd be the big city.
You live in a metropolis compared to the Calif town I live in (4,400 residents)! Technically, we're not a town but an unincorporated area of the county. We don't have a mayor or town council and no police or fire departments. We depend on the county for those services.
In the last year there was an attempt to incorporate but it was defeated.
There's an elementary school here for K-6th but after that the kids get bussed to the big city down the road, population 38,000!

RE: External Email Programs (EEP) ?

...
Whatever "floats your boat" and works for you is the way to go.
Exactly. I started out using email clients in the early 80's but once web based email came about, I switched and never looked back. I love the fact that my email address never changes even if I switch ISPs and love the fact that I can access my email from any device with a browser.
I've been a Hotmail user for more than 10 years and have emails stored on their server that are that old (no need for me to store them locally). I once tried to access one of the older emails but got an error instead. I sent an email to Hotmail support and the next day I was able to open that email.
I've never had the desire or need to read and reply to emails off-line so that isn't a plus for me.

I might consider it except for the ridiculous $150,000 price tag. What fool would buy one at that price?

RE: The Droid cometh!

What plan are people going with? I looked at the available plans and they all seem to be pretty costly. The plans below $80/month were charged data at $1.99 per mb while the $80 and $100 plans had unlimited data. Too rich for my blood and per mb scares the heck out of me.

RE: Laptop burned out BUT........

... I first plugged it into my New HP Win7 machine, but got the big BSOD screen, so I pulled it out right away. ...
Hmmm... I wonder why you got the BSOD when you plugged it into your new machine?
Congrats that you were able to recover your data.
The hard drive from the laptop was a complete XP booting operating system which confused the new computer when I plugged it in.
I was essentially trying to boot and already booted system.
Like trying to start your heart when it was already started. :E
Seems like having a Linux computer lying around comes in handy.
Plugging in an external drive won't change the boot order, I've done what you described (plug in external, bootable drive) many times on XP machines without incident, never required a Linux machine. I've also attached drives like that internally with no issues.
I can think of a scenario that might cause confusion and that would be if you plugged the external drive in BEFORE booting the machine AND your BIOS settings were configured to boot from a USB device first.

RE: Help getting DD214

When you finally get the copy, take it to the "clerk and recorder's office" at your local courthouse, and have it recorded. That way, it is always there, and readily available if you need another copy.
If your records were involved in the fire some years ago, forget it, you probably won't have any chance of recovering them.
Yeah, when I separated from the army in 1974 I was advised to have it recorded with the county clerk (and did). Don't they advise all personnel to do that?
Of course, in the 35 years since I've only been asked to show my DD214 once. I still have a copy lying around somewhere but I think it would probably be more of a hassle to retrieve a copy from the county than to use the website above to request a copy.

RE: Anyone have a HP Pavilion Slimline s5220f Desktop PC

If you are interested in using the Aero features of Win 7 you should be careful regarding that model computer. Aero requires 128M of graphics memory and that only has 64M. Also, the graphics memory is shared with your main memory which means it uses some of your main memory for graphics memory instead of having separate memory for graphics.
