RE: Pop top in AK

hi y'all,
Thanks for taking the time to help us
Well we have (almost) bought a 2004 cummins dually with a big pop top (it has shower & toilet) it has a neat system at the back that allows a taller door, heating, a/c the whole outfit is like new (camper is 2009)---We should leave Tx. next week.
We should be out of Ak. before it gets too cold---well thats the plan.
Our flights back to England are booked from Houston middle of October.
We just can't wait to hit the road-----we have been trying to sort truck and camper for over a week
Truck campers in Tx. are very hard to come by-----GOOD low mile trucks are almost impossible !!!!!! This whole outfit is good to take back to UK.
See you on the road !!!

RE: Pop top in AK

hi
thanks all of you for your comments======very quick!!!!
We have 4 1/2 months for this trip-----we could extend to 6.
to us RVing is about people and 'the trip', the destination is a bonus
We know that we could have gone directly to AK by plane and rented a m/home------we have been desperate to travel route 66 for years------and Alaska is the 'last frontier' right ??????? We are now retired and are in a position to achieve these dreams ---what more can I say??
We could sit in a retirement home and wait to die-------which sounds the best option ????
See you on the side of the road when we break down ?????!!!!!! ANOTHER story to tell when we can no longer travel
Thanks again for your help

Pop top in AK

We are in Texas at the moment looking to buy a truck and truck-camper (slide-in) to travel to Alaska, We had planned a hard-side but with a terrible exchange rate for us, we are looking at cheaper pop-tops (plus it would give a little better fuel consumption) Plus we plan to take the outfit back to UK and eventually sell, a smaller (lighter) one would sale easier
Is this a good idea for Alaska ????.We intend to camp off campsites as much as possible.

RE: Sat-nav

Thanks again guys
Geewizard, one thing that is not always clear in the maps info, is whether or not they have Alaska maps installed-----I realise there are not too many roads to choose from !!!!!!!!but there is a lot of other info. available.
At the moment we think the garmin is favourite------BUT WHAT MODEL ?????
Can you get maps that include low bridges etc. ?(do you have LOW BRIDGES on your side of the pond)??????????

RE: No LP Gas on my camping trip

Hi
sounds like the regulator has died--give it a tap it may come back to life,
loosen the fitting on the'out' side of the regulator, there should be gas there.
good luck

RE: Outfitter Trip Report: Whazoo finds Woop Woop, finally

Hi Silversand
You are right about European travellers--------We just cannot find this kind of isolation and beautifull countryside (plus a better chance of decent weather) Weymard has the best chance of us lot being in France, A REALLY BEAUTIFULL COUNTRY.
We are doing a US road trip this year, but will not be going so off road (even in Alaska) But we are trying to get hold of a 4X4 diesel truck and TC to get us a little off road.

RE: Gas Mileage

We run a 32ft 5er and an 11ft truck camper--I reckon the fuel consumption (with our Dodge diesel) is the same with either one. If we run over 60mph we use more, running at 55 seems to be the best, under 55 makes hills harder work.
Your petrol (gas) truck might prefer a different speed.
Nigel
BTW a trip is not ONLY about fuel cost !!!!!!!!!!!!

Sat-nav

We have travelled for years with only maps and are planning to buy a sat-nav (our first)for our upcoming Americas 'road trip'
in England we have been told to get a Tom-Tom by some, and a Garmin by others----it does seem that they are like tyres or shocks, inthat you will get 20 different 'bests' if you ask 20 people !!!!
Which of these 2 would we be better off with and why ????
We will only get one with maps of Europe, USA (inc. Alaska) and Canada
Thanks for your opinions they WILL be respected,

RE: How to Form a Small Caravan to Alaska

We intend to drive from Tx to Cal then to Alaska--------we REALLY want to meet others on the way------BUT having travelled with several other vehicles 'in convoy' (or caravan) before, we know that it does present problems.
The ideal, we think , is to have a plan of intended route & night stops and plan to look out for others---------------BUT we will not be tied to a set routine, for us this is really a once only trip----if we intend to drive 400 miles in a day, and stop for a break in a great spot (or met a cool person) we would stop the night there! We once stopped for lunch and stayed for a week!!
We will be in Alaska this summer so couldn't run with you !!!!

shore power lead and onboard genny

Hi
We had a situation this weekend that had me guessing,
I was running our small genny on the shore power lead to charge the battery-------we then needed to run the microwave----we have a 2500w onboard genny------could we just start the bigger one to give us the power we need, or must we disconnect/stop the small generator first ??? Can I damage anything by providing power from both sources??
