RE: electric brakes

Thanks for that
Great idea with a compass. The hitch is not in my truck at the moment, we have been using the truck camper.

electric brakes

Hi
I have just discovered that the breakaway wire has been pulled out, (operating the emergency brakes) Will this have burnt out the magnets?? If this is possible is there a way to test without removing the drums?? We last towed the 5er about 4 months ago.
We live in the 5er so the batteries are charged up most days.
Thanks for your advice

RE: Suspension advice

When cornering or brakeing (or both together) a lot of the weight is on the front axle so good shocks all around will help to keep it running flat.
I did not fit air bags on my truck because I want the TC to get all the weight onto the overload springs, and I was afraid that air bags would lift the truck off the springs, AFAIK things like Timbrens put the weight on the springs a little earlier, so these would help if there is a lot of air over the springs. It does depend if the truck sits level when loaded.

RE: Temporary Tie Down Lance 815

I used ratchet straps (a size smaller than all the big trucks use) for a few trips before I managed to get hold of proper tie downs. The front ones are IMHO the most important, I went from the tie down point on TC down outside of body to the chassis (frame) this worked very well BUT the strap did mark the paint slightly. My mate, who is brighter than me, went from the front jack leg mounting, down between cab and back body to the frame, he has used this method several times and reckons it works REALLY well.
Good luck with your new TC
Nigel
I forgot to say that the front tiedowns MUST pull FORWARDS and down, it's these that stop the TC sliding back.

RE: Suspension advice

I was getting very bad roll with my 3500 and very heavy TC, I did ask here for advice and got different suggestions from loads of people------------- I finished up with Edelbrocks and run 80psi in all tyres and the difference is staggering. My money is on Edelbrocks---I don't understand how such a small unit can do so much !!!!!

RE: Weighing in across the US. Are TC's exempt?

All over Europe the 'weight police' WILL stop ANYTHING on wheels!!!!!!!!!
That is why I need to make a new weight sticker for my Ram & TC. !!!!!!!!!

RE: New to TC; Is my camper to heavy for the truck?

my 3500 rolled really bad with my heavy TC on board, I fitted Edlebrock shocks and tyres rated to carry the load----that made a HUGE difference.

RE: hot water heater

there is an inlet pipe---------an outlet pipe---------and a pipe that links these 2, the inlet and outlet valves should be open, in my case the valve handle runs in the same direction as the pipe, the link (bypass) valve must be shut, the valve handle is across the pipe. Run the hot water 'till all air is out of system
If you still have a problem, maybe the hot water tank is clogged?????????

RE: a serious question

you have been very lucky to have so many RVers give you such great advice !!!!!!
The only thing that I can think of to add is a little story from our past !!!
We were going from Norway to Greece in our homebuilt m/home, we started every day about 9am -stopped at about midday------then drove 'till about 5pm----------we picked up a couple of Dutch hitch hikers in Italy and they stayed with us 'till Greece, they tought us to travel in a different mind set!! After that we would stop AT A NICE PLACE whatever the time for a break-------and continue when we were ready-------on one occasion, in France we stopped for lunch in a nice spot by a river-------we left a week later !!!!!!!!!
We never make rigid plans but try to travel when it's not too busy and when the weather SHOULD be OK eg. we are planning to visit Alaska but not until the start of next summer, We are (almost) retired, so time, although not endless is not so much of an issue.
see you on the road

RE: truck camper weight---again

Thanks guys
Our TC & Dodge do look "right" on the road. we travel at a steady rate, along with the other traffic, and although our outfit is very rare here we try not to attract too much attention to outselves.
The biggest fear that we all have is IF we were involved in a serious "incident" the insurance Co. COULD wriggle out of a claim.
We were in a major prang a few years ago and the police impounded our car and went through every nut and bolt----------everything was perfect.
A good friend modified his Land Rover suspension, he was run off the road into a river and several of his kids died----the police did not like his work-------he is now serving many years in jail-------------I don't like to worry, but you can see why !!!!

RE: OUCH! Ford/GM/Dodge sales

I just read that Ford has bought Toyota !!!!! Was it a joke ?????????
The big downside with electric cars seems to be the pollution caused by making (and getting rid of) the batteries and their very short life.

RE: truck camper weight---again

Thanks for the words of support---------------if the sticker is just a recommendation, could they approve a little extra weight ????????
My truck has heavier (rear) springs than standard (stock) really good gas shocks and new front brake callipers and pads plus new, high load rate tyres. I am more afraid of the TC falling apart than the Dodge !!!!!!! Our "weight police" can be a bit moody !!!
We don't have a weight problem with our 5er----------------but it does not have a parking brake------a legal requirement in UK !!!!!!!!!! so I still have to fear the traffic police !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Shipping TC to Europe?!?

You paint a very strange picture of "Europe"
We all know that in the USA you pay very little for road fuel, (and take-away food!) but remember that we don't cover the miles like you do!
Go onto "Motorhome fun.co.uk" and ask how many US RV's are on that 1 forum, that is just one small forum in England.
The $ is VERY high against £ at the moment so this is a REALLY GOOD time to visit England.
You would be amazed at the number of full size US trucks there are in England, when I need parts for mine (or the 5er or TC) I 'phone a dealer in USA with a credit card No, and have the parts in my hands in about 4 days------------it can take weeks to get some European parts.
In England it is VERY rare to get any snow in July it certainly will not be cold enough to settle and stay.
Werever you go in the holiday season (even Yosemite) camp-sites can get full.
Enjoy your next trip to Europe.

Can I get the label on the door post changed to 6 ton?? --------I bought new tyres to carry my load, but the law will look at the sticker for my gross
weight (not the tyres)

truck camper weight---again

We run a Dodge 3500 with a max vehicle weight of 5 tonne
Our T C is a Fleetwood Elkhorn 11J I would have said that they were "made for each other" We put the outfit onto a weighbridge today-------1/4 tank of diesel---empty black & grey tanks--- little fresh water---very little food, clothes etc.,
The weight was 5.5 tonne, is it usual to be so over-weight ????!!!!!
The truck is 4x4, so we could swap for a lighter 2x4, would a (lighter) single rear wheel truck carry the weight ??, what truck would legally carry my TC ???? Would a dually normally have a greater gross weight??

RE: Shipping TC to Europe?!?

Thanks for the invite, Mark,
We don't know exactly yet, but we have a loose plan to fly into New York, if we can find a shipping Co. that will take us on the ship with our truck, we would love to travel with it !!!!
The "plan" is to follow as much of Route 66 as possible from Chicago to Houston, where my sister lives, stopping at cheap motels on the way !!!
Then back onto 66 to L A.
Visit friends in Cal. then travel up to Alaska ---------------it's a hellava big trip and we may have to break the trip with a visit back to England if we can't get visas for long enough to do the trip in one hit.

RE: Shipping TC to Europe?!?

I just had a look at your profile, if that pop top is yours you will have NO problems with it in Europe. shipping is by "cube" so it should be reasonable, if it will fit in a container it should be cheaper and safer. Our camper would not work on your truck, we had thought of a lend/swap.

RE: Shipping TC to Europe?!?

We use a Ram dually and big TC in England, it would be easier with a SRW truck for city touring etc. but many cities have a "park & ride" bus service. Remember that nearly every road in England (and the rest of Europe) is serviced by 8ft wide busses and trucks.
We are looking at shipping our Dodge to USA for a trip next year, we will not take our TC as we intend to spend some time in Alaska and we think that the roads will destroy it !!!
For power just plug the site 240v lead into a 240 to 110 transformer (all US rv.s have this system retrofitted so that we don't have to swap all the 110v equip.)
For LPG you could use an "extenda-stay" connected to a "local" bottle, but we use the US bottles and fill via "auto-gas" at fuel stops. You can pm me or pick up info. from a free forum "motorhome fun.co.uk"
Am I correct in that you are in TX ? we should be there next year.
