Thor / MVP Vortex & Tahoe parts supplier

Thought I'd put this up so it might help someone else. If you're looking for factory parts for your Vortex and Tahoe (and probably many more models) made by Thor (who was bought by MVP)... Tom at RV Parts Specialist http://www.rvpartsspecialist.com/ is the guy to talk to.
Since finding water trapped between the layers of the 5 sided, dual pane skylight in my bathroom I've been trying to track down the correct replacement. If I understand it right, MVP is closing down their CA operations and is putting their inventory in the hands of RV Parts Specialist. Its taken about 2 months... I'm told mostly because of the delay of MVP getting their inventory of parts available to RV Parts Specialist... but they now have access to the parts warehouse and my skylight is shipping out today.
Hope this helps someone.

RE: Lifting the rear end of the truck

Love my air bags. I installed them with the compressor mounted beneath the truck and a single gauge in the cab. The two bags are connected together so the pressure in them stays equal. A switch next to the gauge lets me add or remove air at any time.
I save some $$ and bought them from Arnott. They were selling via ebay when I found them. Arnott is not a well known name, but is a big time OEM supplier.

RE: Has anyone gone from a std 5th wheel to a bumper pull TH?

Do you think you'll end up over your trucks GVWR with the RZR in the back while bumper pulling such a large unit?
My bumper pull is only 28' and I'm at my truck's GVWR with no load in the bed.

Whats the worst mess you've had on your Toy Hauler?

Mine is 10 quarts of motor oil sprayed in a mist.
Except for bug splatter I hadn't had any exceptional messes until last week. Our tow rig developed a significant oil leak that we were completely unaware of until we stopped for a dinner break. Grabbed the handle of the toy hauler to open the door and found it covered in oil... and then followed the mess forward to the puddle forming under my engine. We were in between home and our destination (both of which have dealers near them), so we pressed on, topping off the engine oil hourly. I figure the Toy Hauler was bathed in about 10 quarts of oil by the time we reached our destination.
Today I finally started tackling the exterior of the trailer. About 75% of the exterior ended up with coated in oil... and the underside looks more like it was coated in grease since the oil mixed together with existing dust and a constant supply of road dust kicked up by the tow vehicle.
Had to wash the exterior twice and even still there are areas that need better cleaning... and all the caulking on the trailer now looks like CRAP. Cleaning the bottom of the trailer ruined my pole brush. The bristles are caked with the grease-like stuff now... off to Camping World tomorrow I guess.

RE: Where to by 6 Volt batteries in San Francisco area

I bought 2 Trojans from a local shop in Windsor called Battery Systems, they are part of a chain though like Interstate. 129.00 each and they waived the core as I had a brand new 12 Interstate that my Fuzion came with. I doubt the single 12 would have run the furnace blower at night, dealer said who needs 2 batteries with an Onan.
Yeah that was my experience. First night out in our new toy hauler we woke up cold... the heater fan had drained the single Interstate. I ended up going with two 12V deep cycle Optima gell cells. I can't tell you how they compare with the 6V batteries, but I'm pleased with them.

RE: new trailer/extra waranty worth it

I got one with mine... was very happy to have it last month when my tow vehicle shut down and would not restart. The trailer warranty covered towing for both tow vehicle and trailer... even if the problem was not with the trailer.
There is a lot of mark up on extended warranties.

RE: Diamond plate trim on wall?

Depending on the thickness of the diamond plate, I'd be using 1/4" or 1/2"... or better yet, an adhesive... no holes.

RE: Skylight sealant and warranty questions

Thanks for turning me on to Eternobond. I ended up buying the Eternobond through the internet. Only one place in the greater San Jose area sold Eternobond, but they didn't stock what I wanted.
Install was easy... and hopefully I never have to deal with that skylight seal again. I also followed mapguy's example and sealed up the front seal... and will do the rear seal after I order another roll of Eternobond.
I also bought the 3M 4000uv and recaulked many joints this week. I really like it. Much easier to work with than the cheap junk I had previously tried.
Thanks!

RE: Solar - Who's using it and how many watts?

Wow... I checked some of those links. People have some serious setups! They're all beyond what I'm willing to spend at this point.
Anyone have a setup similar to the 60W Sunforce setup? How useful is it for you? How much less are you using your generator?

Solar - Who's using it and how many watts?

I've been getting interested in solar for my Toy Hauler lately. I dig the idea of having my batteries charging up while I'm out playing... and putting less hours on my generator charging the batteries back up.
Are many of you using a solar setup? Like it? How many watts?
How many solar panel watts would you need to do some real work... like power an inverter big enough to power the microwave?
Costco has a 60W kit from Sunforce that caught my eye.

Skylight sealant and warranty questions

I was on the roof installing another MaxxAir tonight and noticed an issue with the sealant around my skylight. My first question is what type of sealant is this? Looks black until you scrape into it, its actually white.
I noticed several small depressions in the sealant that went all the way through it, exposing the edge of the skylight where it meets the rubber roof covering. Is it normal for this to happen over time? I don't remember seeing these depressions before.
I'm leaving on a 10 day trip Friday so I won't be able to get it to the dealer for 2-3 weeks. I expect dry weather the entire trip so I'm not concerned about rain. The trailer was a left over 2008 model that I bought new just 7 months ago, so its under the 12mo warranty still. Would you expect they'll cover this under the warranty? Would you push for them to remove all of the sealant and reapply it? or is it ok to just to add more sealant where it is having issues?

RE: Anyone add storege to toyhauler?

I wanted to add one of these drawers by Tuffy under my Toy hauler, but they want too much $$ for them. I still like the idea, but I'll probably just fabricate my own eventually.http://www.tuffyproducts.com/images/Product/medium/109-07_VF_O1C1_P.jpg

RE: Finally, A Led Replacement Bulb That Works!!!

I just tried a pair of these over the weekend. The color is good, similar to a normal bulb. Light output directly under the light is about the same as with a bulb... but it offers less light in other directions. The standard bulb throws light in all directions better.
I'm not going to be dropping $300 to replace the rest of my bulbs, but I will probably be buying another pair of them. They'll come in handy when we're boondocking.

RE: Let the modifications begin

Thanks. Yeah, I ran my wiring all the way to the front of the trailer since the trailer manufacturer didn't run any wiring for the back up lights.
The high mounted brake lights are great. Last week I towed through your lovely LA traffic and found lane changes surprisingly easy. Since I'm certain the traffic behind me couldn't see my lower brake lights, it had to be the high mounted lights working their magic.
