RE: Lightweight camper reccomendations

Look at the Adventuer 80 GS with a manual slide. they just released it, About 15K and light. Actually has a full shower. See Truck camper magazine I saw the prototype at an RV show 2 months ago. I was impressed, both design & quality. I think you will see imitators. this is an unexplored market niche. Most of the advantages of a pop up but without the hassles.

RE: Bici Map Micro SD Card

The card is supposedly not compatible with mapsource. Mapsource is not a free download, but you may be able to get a copy from another Garmin owner to see if it helps. There is a basic version of it linked on BICI's site.

RE: Burglaries in Western Canada

We have a common, powered, RV storage spot close to our home that is shared with 6 others and has to accessed via a driveway. We did have one break in, they did not touch my unit. Since then I leave an LED light on in there, so they are not sure if someone is sleeping in there or not.

RE: Guia Roji

I found them at Mega, I had problems locating it in other stores including Walmarts. You really don't need it in English.

RE: Electrical Issue on a 10.2 rk SnowBird.

Dans suggestion makes sense. At least you will be able to see what color it is. If you can't solve it, on Monday you can phone Lucky at Midtown RV in Penticton (250-492-5705), he works there & was the electrical guy for Snow River.

RE: New Triple Slide

You see so many cases here of problems, I don't think anyone should buy a new model camper in its first year, especially from a company with no previous camper building experience. Same with cars. Obviously some do or no one would ever get into business. But that is for someone else, certainly not me. Your profile says you have a "2006 Snowriver 9 ft 6" and a "2006 SnowBird 9'6". Do you own 1 of each? Technically a snowbird since purchased in Canada but I requested Snowriver logo's with no problem. I like the name better. I think they actually dropped the snowbird name in 2008, I've seen other SnowRivers with Canadian plates around.

RE: New Triple Slide

As far as I know a Snowbird & Snowriver camper were identical except for the logo. Both were made to Oregon State standards which apparently are the stickiest. The story I heard on the name was first of all, as someone mentioned, SB was already used in the US, also Midtown RV in Penticton was the exclusive Canadian distributor & owned the name Snowbird. Maybe they provided some investment in the company when it first started. Maybe Mr Mehrer, if he sees this, can enlighten. I guess he can post now he has closed the business down.

RE: Climatologists baffled by Global warming stall

There is no doubt warming is occurring. You can't fake melting icecaps. The debate is over human responsibility for it. Whatever the main cause, if it does not reverse, we have a heck of a lot of adaptation to do ahead of us. Going green is a good thing whether it helps or not. I don't buy the argument it will ruin the economy. Remember when computers first came in. Everyone was predicting they would put everyone out of work. The exact opposite was true. In fact every major tech shift in history has created wealth & employment, not destroyed it. People are simply afraid of change. A normal human characteristic.

RE: New Triple Slide

I just get a little wary of a company who has never produced a slide bringing out a triple, and with what I presume is an un-field-tested mechanism. With what TC mag says is a tiny motor. I am assuming the slides themselves are hardly lightweight. Are they going to stay in, on the road or start to slide out unless tied down? I would not buy one at this point. I also wonder just how much market there is for triple slides. I have not sen many of them out there, I can't see how you could carry one an anything less than a 1 ton dually, so you have limited your market right there.

RE: New Triple Slide

Anyone who would buy a camper with 3 slides, and 3 times the places for something to go wrong, when it is only 3 weeks out of prototype, needs their head examined. I also question just how strong a slide mechanism that only weighs 7 pounds can be. I also question using the walls & insulation to hold it together instead of interior framework. I would be reluctant to take this camper off a paved highway. Maybe 3 years from now I will be proved wrong, but I would not buy one until it has been around at least that long.

RE: Cost of Travel in Mexico...

I figure this year being down 5 months, I will break even on insurance since what it will cost me is about what i will get back on my auto insurance at home. On top of that i will put storage insurance on my car. I will save $650 by doing that, which will help offset toll & fuel costs. I usually find i spend less on the road than I do being at home. Some people posting above must have found some pretty pricey RV parks, I figure I average about $15 to $20 a night, far cheaper than the US. I try to boondock or stay at friends while transiting the US. It would be nice to find 3 or 4 other rigs to travel with in Mexico so boondocking would be an option there.

RE: Pre-trip shopping -- stuff to bring?

Don't forget an extra sewer hose & maybe an RV water pump. RV parts are almost impossible to find. I am also carrying a spare set of U-bolts & wheel bearing kits for my trailer. Friends of mine broke a U bolt on their cargo trailer & had to have a metal shop rig a temp substitute that eventually broke as well. I found a set of 4 U-bolts & brackets for $20, I carry. I also figure I could replace bearings on the roadside in a pinch.

RE: Survey of Safe and Unsafe States in Mexico

bars on windows are common in all countries with warm climates & lower living standards. A/C is pricey and you can't live inside without windows open.

RE: Beware of Pemex 3811 a few miles south of Santa Ana

I do a few things to protect myself. At the one I got ripped off at, another attendant distracted my attention. First of all I have a locking gas cap. This prevents anyone from starting to fill before I get out of the truck, it also prevents someone from putting gasoline instead of diesel in. That also means I can see them zero the pump. I know enough Spanish to make small talk so i do that on the theory that they are less likely to rip off someone who seems friendly and not aloof. I also always tip the attendant 10 or 20 peso's. I figure this may give them a better impression of tourists and less likely to rip them off in future.

RE: Comparing maps and GPS etc.

I found errors in last years Guia Roji. In one case i got stuck in a small town & had to pull up onto the square in order to back up to make a corner. The map indicated a road that did not exist. Fortunately a cop did not see me. I also found turnoffs a good 6 km from where the map indicated they were. Still, its a hard book to do without.

RE: Beware of Pemex 3811 a few miles south of Santa Ana

I got ripped at one just east of Tepic (still in the suburbs) on the left (going eastbound) about 2 km past the PV turnoff.

RE: Endeavor Launch - STS-130

I saw one a few years ago. It is real tough to get anywhere close unless you have a contact in the aerospace industry & can get a site pass. The fact that Florida is so flat makes it hard to get a good vantage point. A freeway overpass was the best I could do, and I could not see it til it cleared the tree line, but it was still impressive.
