Engine brake

I'm trying to gain as much knowledge on diesels as I can as I will be trading up sometime in the coming months. I read Johnny T's post on pac and jake brake systems (excellent) but was curious about a couple of things. First, when traveling down hills I often see signs that say "no engine brake". I presume they want you to switch off your engine brake for some reason, is this correct and why? Second, I've read not to use engine brake on wet roads. Is that because it is better to just use the foot brake to control the MH to avoid it from skidding? Thank you, Bob.

First off, the picture of the post that said carry one of these in Canada and show a picture of a shotgun. It looks similar to mine which is illegal in Canada as only HUNTING shotguns are allowed and not self defense type that have shorter barrels and hold 5 to 8 rounds. Next, if you have a conceal carry permit like I do, it cannot be hidden as it will be revealed to the police officer when they run your plates or drivers license so you have to be honest if you have a weapon in your vehicle. Since we are full timers I will avoid the states with very strict gun laws but going on a trip to Alaska poses a problem. It is always nice to have some protection when boondocking and I would like my 45 near by when I plan to salmon fish in Alaska for protection from a hungry bear etc. Guess I'll leave the guns and take my chances that a rare occasion for the need of a fire arm will not be needed and enjoy.

Tinstar,
They raise our rent by $60 a month in the summer for A/C use. Our monthly rate in the winter is $667 but this is a five star RV park in Boulder City, NV. I feel that using a small electric heater in the winter isn't out of line but I guess they do. Also thought their reasoning might be fire hazard from some electric heaters. Bob.

We recieved notification from the leasing office that they want RVers to use their furnaces and NO space heaters. I guess they can tell by electricity consumption if one is using space heaters but I would much rather use the space heater for the limited use we need.

Bedroom heater

Not exremely cold here in Las Vegas so we get by with a small electric heater in the living room area but fired up the rear heater last night for the first time. Is this another propane powered unit like the front furnace and do they use much propane to run? Thank you. Bob.

Sounds like a good deal but if two people live in the RV both have to work 15 hours per week. The lots are very close together as well, they sent us pictures. But 30 hours of work (between DW and DH) for an RV space doesn't seem that great a deal to me.

RE: Where to FT in Las Vegas?

We full time in Boulder City at Boulder oaks RV park. It is in my opinion the finest in the LV area. We have a beautiful view of Red Mountain and Lake Mead. The lots are privately owned and some are rented out through the leasing office at $700 per month. Includes full 50 amp hookups and Cox cable. I drive 25 miles to work at Caesars Palace and it is well worth it.

air compressors

Can anyone recommend a good air compressor that will air up my RV tires that is somewhat compact to fit in the storage compartment. I have searched on line and the ones I have viewed are either very large or expensive. Thanks you.

50amp service verses 30amp

I have been looking at a few dp's and one in particular is a 2001 Safari Cheeta. It is a beautiful coach, 330 cat DP with a 7500 diesel gen set yet the add says it has 30 amp service. Does this mean I will be limited even with shore power? Is there a way to convert it to 50 amp and be able to use both A/C together and other appliances? Thanks in advance. Bob.

MisterMCD, I have a 12 year old gasser and also am in search for the perfect DP. We bought our current MH about 8 months ago and it has dropped in price considerably due to the economy. I think you can throw the NADA out the window at this point. I saved a link from a previous post for PPL down in Houston, Tx,(not sure how to pass it on). If you do a search you can find it easy. They have a huge assortment of DP's and the prices keep dropping. I use it as comps when looking for a DP here in Vegas but I may eventually make a trip down to Houston and trade mine in on a DP. Sellers today are taking a beating in most cases and PPL won't even take a MH on consignment unless it is priced right in today's market value. Hope this was helpful and good luck in your search.

2000 Monaco Diplomat

Hello eveyone. Would like some advice on a Monaco DP. We are starting to shop around to upgrade to a DP from our 1997 Georgie Boy gasser. Came across a 2000 38' Monaco Diplomat DP with a 315hp Cummins in very good condition. Asking price was reduced to 48k. Is this a good deal and is this MH a mid level coach that will stand up for 10 more years? Thank you as always. Bob.

In answer to both questions, if you are not planning to drive it much then a gasser is probably your way to go. For that matter if you just want to live in it then a 5th wheel or TT might work better. More living space for less money. We bought a gasser to live in about 7 months ago and now regret not getting a diesel to begin with. We plan to travel in a couple of years and want all the benefits of a diesel now that we know better.

Thanks you guys. I want to do the best I can until I can upgrade to a vintage Diesel. This MH has 16 inch tires and weight is an issue even when empty. I figure with the refer and propane tank on opposite side of slide helps balance but don't paticularly like the weight of water tank, gen set, clothes, etc. behind the rear axel on this rig. Will do the best I can for now thanks, Bob.

weight distribution

We are going through our things and getting rid of unwanted items in an attempt to balance out the weight and lighten the load of our MH. We have a large living room slide out and was wondering when the coach is completley empty (that is of our belongings) is the weight pretty well distributed then or does the slide out side make that side heavier? Also thought it would be a good idea to put as much of the heaviest things in front of the rear axel and maintain a minimum of water in the fresh water tank. If it makes a difference, we have a 1997 Georgie Boy Cruisemaster with a 460 Ford. Appreciate any opinions? Thank you. Bob.

Thank you, good advice and perspectives. To someone who mentioned enough money to upgrade car and or RV. Before I retire I plan to sell my 2002 Camaro and upgrade to a little newer and more practical car to tow as well as maybe not much newer but a good quality DP if I can afford it. I will use part of what is left in my 401k from this sinking economy to still owe nothing and some left over for the unexpected and repairs. Once again, thanks for the tips. Bob.

Retirement for the less fortunate

I have read many opinions on what it takes to retire these days and still am wondering if I am being unrealistic. Many have said $1 million plus in savings and 50k a year in combined income ( SS etc.). Those numbers don't even come close to what I can do. I work for 60k a year and no longer own a stick home. My MH and car and everything else I own are paid for and in 3 years I will be 62 and can retire with about $1600 a month SS and a modest 401k savings. We have checked into places in Arizona which seams ideal for us for between $300 and $500 per month including utilities. We don't live an extravegant life style but would like to take trips a few times a year. I also think I could pick up a few extra bucks working part time if I have to. Am I being realistic about this? My alterative is to work longer and maybe never getting to retire and fully enjoy the RV life style. I would like to hear from those who have been there and done that in my income range. Thank you all in advance. Bob.
