RE: four corners camping

After you visit Four Corners, be sure to visit the official Center of the World, in Felicity, California, 8 miles west of Yuma. http://www.felicity.us/center.html Nope, I haven't stopped there yet.

RE: Service engine soon dash light

You can buy an ODB scanner that will read the code to tell you what is wrong and then turn the light off if you want. I got mine at Amazon (an Actron, they have lots of choices) but just saw a different one at Costco for $35. Plug it in (usually under the dash), turn the key to on, and read the code. I figure if it's something minor (usually a smog device) I can wait until my next scheduled maintenance, if it's major (missing) I'll take it in sooner. Either way, no worrying about what might be wrong.

RE: Any USFS folks here?

National forests = "Land of many uses" as the signs used to read. About 10 years ago I was at a campground in the southern Sierra Nevada. My son and I were down at the river fishing, my wife and daughter were up at camp. We heard what sounded like an earthquake and ran up the river bank to see the air filled with dust. My wife said a cattle stampede went through. I thought yeah, right. As we loaded the car to leave, the same sound began, and hundreds of cows came right through the entire camp, along with half a dozen cowboys. It was the annual move-the-cows-to-winter-pasture cattle drive.

RE: Camping Fee Increase at Calif State Parks

I truely believe that if California goes with their plan to offer some of these parks out for concession, private leesees can and will do a better job of running the sites. But then let's see what the price will be for a beach-front site. Don't forget that Yosemite lodging and services are all leased to a private company and they have been doing a great job. Sorry, I disagree. That private company doesn't have a system in place to ensure the person making the reservation is the person checking in. Scalpers make reservations then sell them at inflated prices to those who missed out before those reservations sold out in 30 minutes.

RE: Trade in a clunker program; anybody do it?

Anyone trade their clunker for a Hummer? (Yes, the Hummer H3 is a qualified replacement vehicle.)

RE: New phrases that you just hate!!

whatever... When I hear that I know the the speaker is not literate enough to articulate an intelligent response. Whatever... Actually, I use that a lot when I'm in a meeting with people discussing ad nauseum whether, for example, to paint something beige or tan. I guess you've proven your point Dave, although you could also add .....or not polite enough to articulate an ........... So what is your preference, beige or tan? Or Swiss Coffee, or cottage white? Maybe a nice navajo white, or a beige-tan, or is it tan-beige? As for myself, I don't care, hence, whatever. I find it more polite to say "whatever" than to say "shut up and just paint it already!" It lightens the mood when people get wound up about nothing. In one charity (I'm a founding board member), they know when I say "whatever" it's time to move on to something more important and let the person in charge of that function make the decision. Now, I'd never use that term speaking to my own board of directors at work.

RE: Home Security System....... Do you have one.

A good source of security system info is http://www.diysecurityforum.com/. It is geared to the do-it-yourselfer, but you can learn about various systems, including DIY systems that use the same equipment the big national companies buy.

RE: Van length

Glen-L has some plans for van conversions consisting of a couple pages of drawings and about 20 pages of tips on how-to. There are several floorplans for short and long-wheelbase vans. I got these thinking I'd do it myself but after looking at the effort involved and my (lack of) talent, and my wife seeing a Pleasure-way Excel, we bought the PW instead.

RE: Saw a neat snake at Saguaro Nat'l Park

Does anyone know what this rock formation is called in Tucson? Rocks http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll120/DesertHawk46/CastleRockfromVicksburgSt.jpg I have named it Castle Rocks, just wandering if they have a name. Photo taken from Houghton Road at Victburgh St. on east side of Tucson. Thimble Peak.

RE: NO PETS allowed?

There are no bad dogs, just bad dog owners. I just returned from a week trip. Each day we took our leashed dog on a hike. Repeatedly we would encounter unleashed dogs that would run right up to her. Our dog has a lot of anxiety, and gets easily scared when a strange dog gets in her face. (Hey, I get scared too when a stranger gets right in my face!) Even with the leash shortened to one foot long, and telling the other person to call their dog off, they would respond with "he's friendly" and "no problem," and my dog would inform their dog to back off. In camp she was the quietest one around, only barking once when a bear came into camp late at night. Another "friendly" dog I encountered last year on a hike walked right past me, then turned and bit me on the behind when I wasn't looking. The owner's response? "Gee, he's never done that before!" So, I say ban bad dog owners and let the good dogs take over the world!

RE: 2 METER ANT ON PLASTIC ROOF CLASS

My wife said NO holes in the rig, so went with a glass mount. I have a class B (fiberglas roof and coach body) with a couple small windows like skylights on the front top of the roof, angled forward about 45 degrees. I mounted the antenna at the bottom of that window to keep the total height down a little, but still have well over half the whip above the roof line, and with a fiberglass RV no metal parallel to the whip. The coax is then conveniently located to the radio behind the driver seat. SWR is low and reports are good. A couple things I learned. First get a good antenna, not some mighty fine junk. I used the Larsen KG 2/70CXPL - pricey but the only glass mount I've heard good reviews about. Also, I removed the window tint film where the antenna base is mounted. Clean the window well with alcohol wipes, and then the outside with the provided "enhancer". While I'm sure I'd have a bit more power with a ground plane, my wife is happy and I have my radio (which she will be using more than me). AA6J

RE: Draining water while driving?

Clear drinking water IS NOT A HAZERDOUS MATERIAL I sure don't care about this, but in California clear drinking water IS considered an environmental threat as the chlorine harms natural water sources. It has to be dechlorinated when flushing hydrants, and I know of at least one fire department that was cited for hosing down a fire engine after a fire and letting the water run down the street. Yes, probably only in California. i don't necessarily agree with this position, but whatever.

RE: alarm panel in PW

Happened to me once where the wind blew the generator exhaust into the open door. My technical solution was to close the door.

RE: 12Volt Issues

Check the specific gravity in each cell. It may be one cell is almost dead but a fresh charge will still show 12.6V even though it won't hold that charge long. (I just replaced a battery that did this.)

RE: My Digital TV Not Getting Digital Broadcast

My digital TV is "HD ready" and a "monitor". It only has an NTSC tuner (the old analog mode). To receive digital broadcast you need an ATSC tuner. All the NEW TVs should have them. You may also need a new antenna.
