RE: Normal coolant temps on diesel in cold weather?

I know mine coach has a hydraulically driven radiator fan. I started mine up last week, and noticed that on a cold start, the fan was spinning.... albeit, not full speed, but fast enough to where it could be pulling in enough air to matter. Just food for thought... This might be an overlooked problem... Just FYI....
No, high speed fan will NOT cause cold engine temperatures. The thermostat(s) control engine temperature.
Remember, 95% of rear radiators coaches have FIXED FANS. They are turning the same speed/moving the same volume of air in the dead of winter as in 120 degree heat.
The thermostat(s) determine how much volume of coolant (if any) goes to the radiator. And if coolant temperature is below thermostat opening temperature, none goes to the radiator.

RE: Refer Gas/Electric Primary Mode

Until you get an answer to that, leave it set on GAS instead of AUTOMATIC or unplug the 120 VAC plug in the back.

RE: Dolores Hidalgo to Guanajuato

If you are in SMA, just take the bus over for the day.
We picked it up one block south of La Siesta at the Celya intersection.
Quite painless.

RE: Headlight changeout or new bulbs ??

What kind of Relay are you guys talking about? Where can I get this?
Any auto parts store has them. Go well oversize in terms of amps, they are not much more money.
Most are just 4 connections:
Hot wire in (from fused battery source)
Wire out to lights (when relay closed)
Signal wire from light switch
Ground wire for relay.
Here is one: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/OPR0/A715.oap?keyword=30+amp+relay

RE: Dolores Hidalgo to Guanajuato

Have not been on 110, but the commercial bus from SMA to Guanajuato goes from SMA south on the road toward Celaya, then right on the road that goes by the south side of the lake and through Santa Fe. It comes out on the "correct" (SW)side of Guanajuato, not requiring tunnel driving.
Shouldn't be an issue for you.

RE: What did you do to your Class A MH today???

Removed the Wingard antenna-- we went with a King Control 2200 that is satellite PLUS off-air antenna.
Before junking the old crank up antenna, I did a test. In our metal storage building, did a channel seek. The King came up with 4 more channels than did the crank up antenna.
SO, removed the antenna, made wood plugs to fill the large holes. Then West System Epoxied the holes.
Weather permitting, tomorrow will sand and paint that part of the roof (fiberglass). The antenna was one of the few things that, under certain side-wind conditions rattled on our coach.

RE: Normal coolant temps on diesel in cold weather?

John,
The 3116 and early 3126 DO only have a single thermostat.
But, starting in the late 1990's thru current, they all have two.

RE: Transmission oil/filter change--how much to pay

Asking for price "reality check" without posting your Dexron 3 or Transynd decision is almost meaningless.
And, as others have said, an easy job if you have an inch-lb torque wrench.
Brett, I just checked my new filter kit and it says to torque to 38-45 lb.ft.
Yup. My ft-lb torque wrench doesn't go that low.
I torque to 480 INCH-pounds with my inch-pound wrench.

RE: When did Class A diesels first appear.

For many purposes they started making them in 1993. That's when the 6 speed Allison and the 230HP Cummins 5.9 were first sold. You don't want any less engine or transmission than that if you ever leave Florida.
Yup, also the first year of the "modern" in-line 6 cylinder from Caterpillar. That was one of my selection criteria: 6 cylinder with Allison 6 speed.

RE: Dometic fridge won't run on propane

Not quite clear on what you did/didn't clean.
Did you remove the burner tube and clean it?
And more details on exactly what happens will get us closer to assisting.
Start by turning on another propane appliance until good flame is seen, hopefully "downstream" of the rerigerator to help insure good propane supply.
As suggested, go out and remove the tin cover over the burner area.
Have someone turn on the refrig.
Do you hear a clicking?
Do you see any flame?
How long does the flame last if it goes out?
Paul has posted some excellent before/after photos of a dirty/cleaned burner tube flame: http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/22961350/srt/pa/pging/1/page/1.cfm

RE: New Batteries -- Need Opinion

Theoretically, you are correct.
But from a "bang for the buck" standpoint, buying "unique" batteries doesn't stack up.
And gel batteries have pretty much been superseded by AGM batteries.
I would go with the 8D's in parallel or 3 pairs of 6 VDC golf cart batteries with AGM being the BEST.
We have used Lifeline AGM's in our boats and RV's for 15+ years:

RE: Cruise control problems...

Jim,
See if you can determine the brand. Bendix was a big supplier at that time.
Most of the makers of cruise controls of that vintage have been long out of that business, so if the fix isn't simple, before spending $$ and still having a cruise where parts are difficult/impossible to find, consider what we did.
Went with a King Control Cruise. Were able to use same driver's area switches and wiring to the back, so the installation wasn't bad. It has worked flawlessly for 5+ years.

RE: Has 'anyone taken a class A MH from Maz to Duango

Depending on which direction you are going (UP or DOWN), you will need nothing special going up, but good engine braking going down.
Very doable if you are comfortable with mountain driving.
Avoid if you are not (go south to Tepic and cross to Guad).

RE: 08 Fleetwood Discovery Dead Batteries

I have not heard of the term "Black wire disease" either, but it could easily be used to describe the oxidation and breakdown of the wires that migrates from the battery terminals.
THAT we have all seen.

RE: Normal coolant temps on diesel in cold weather?

Slow warm up-- common cause thermostat stuck open.
I want to replace the t-stats on my 3126. I was told that the housing and/or one of the bolts can often break during removal. I don't mind taking this on myself, but don't want to be trying to remove a broken bolt from the cylinder head if avoidable.
Also, is the 'housing' basically the upper radiator hose connection to the engine?
I have not heard of a high failure rate of thermostat housing bolts. But if you want to play if conservative, use a Q-tip to soak them with penetrating oil overnight. Best penetrating oil is homemade (50/50 ATF and Acetone). Don't slop it (or any other penetrating oil for that matter) on belts, other painted items, etc.
And if you can't break the bolts loose then with a torque you are comfortable with, STOP.
And, yes, the thermostats are under where the upper radiator hose goes into the front (front of the engine/rear of coach) of the engine.
It is actually a separate housing, not part of the head.

RE: Maintenance Overkill?

K&N can ruin your engine. Google and find out.
No engine manufacturer endorses K&N or other cleanable filters. They let way too much dirt through.
BTW, it is NOT because they want to sell their own filters-- at least in the case of Caterpillar, they don't even make filters for OTR vehicles. The filters are speced by the chassis maker.

RE: Headlight changeout or new bulbs ??

Along with aiming the headlights, before considering replacement, check VOLTAGE at the headlights with engine running and compare to voltage at the chassis battery.
Many rigs have very inadequate wiring from battery to headlights. Some wire it through a switch and small-gauge wire.
If that is the case, installing lights that demand MORE amps is not the solution.
Better to install a RELAY (under $8). Large gauge, fused wire from battery, head light switch provides "signal" and large gauge wire to headlights. You will be amazed at the difference an extra volt makes to brightness.
