RE: wanting info. on travelling in Mexico

I second Star Choice and they will also help you while you are out of Canada. I am glad that you are choosing Mexico for your next trip, as we, also, stayed in Az. last winter, and as usual, the wind & cool temps are not what we want. The Mazatlan area has filled up very fast for the past few winters as a few RV parks have closed down and it is hard to get a spot unless you reserve well in advance. We have made reservations at Celestino RV Resort, just an hours drive north of Mazatlan and for a first timer to Mexico it's on the toll road so driving is a breeze. It's about 1100 kms from Nogales and by taking your time the trip from Nogales to Celestino would be about 3 days on a leisure pace. It's not hot, like Puerto Vallarta, but is right on the sea and the town of La Cruz is about 20 minutes away for all of your shopping needs. The park has wifi, a washer and dryer, and the owner, Chris, is very accommodating. The very wide sites are separtated by bushes so it is somewhat private but still retains a friendly atmosphere. I am sure others on the board will have additional comments to make, but do keep in mind the topes (speed bumps) through towns which are sometimes hard to see. If you want a detailed map on how to get there, go to www.ontheroadin.com and for a small fee you can download a itemized map with listings of Pemex (the state run service stations) as well as all other info one needs to travel to this great country. Good luck in planning your trip, as planning is a very good idea in Mexico. There are two other parks in the Celestino area and I believe this area will really expand in the next few years as more RV'ers get to know the peacefulness surroundings.

RE: wanting info. on travelling in Mexico

Chuck the Bell and switch to Star Choice!
That said I was told that "the Powers that Be" are trying to stop Star Choice from Beaming Their Signal into as Wide an Area! This may have something to do with the Changes we are All going to have to address in 2009!

RE: wanting info. on travelling in Mexico

ExpressVu won't work very far into Mexico. It doesn't even work real well in southern Arizona. Star Choice is the way to go if you are going to Mexico.
The gospel for Mexican travel is Church's Mexico book. There's lots of us Canucks make the trek down there every winter so fire away with the questions. Mexico is a big country with a variety of RV experiences available - all the way from Mexico lite destinations that won't be a whole lot different than the US or Canada to some pretty "rustical" situations.
Get yourself a Spanish CD from the bargain bin at WallyMart and start learning some basic spanglish now. It's not essential but it will pay off big time in enjoyment down the road.

RE: DirecTv HELP in BAJA ???

Too late now, but the only really reliable reception in Mexico is from Star Choice Canada. USA residents can get a Star Choice Dish and receiver, plus the necessary Canada billing address from www.kusat.com

RE: Dish Network: How far south on the mainland?

For both Dish and Direct TV, the signal you get is bleed-over from their actual footprint. The technology has improved considerably since the old birds were launched.
Direct TV moved a new satellite (or 2?) in place and transfered all their programming. The new ones have a much more defined footprint which makes it almost impossible to get a signal once you get away from the border.
Dish will probably be following suite in the near future. So you might want to start looking for a Canadian address so you can sign up for Star Choice, which has a footprint that covers Mexico (on purpose).

RE: roads around Villerhormosa and Tampico

In reply. Thank you for the welcome. We drove to Chetumal and are now near Dangriga, Belize. Took truck to Palencia. Wash board and stoney for about 25 miles. Our 72 cm Star Choice TV antenna works fine. Got the Football game!

RE: DISH in Puerto Vallatra

If you are looking for a program that gives the pointing directions in magnetic declination, you can find it Here
Ignore the skew setting, it's just for internet dishes, unless you are aiming a Star Choice TV dish.

RE: DirecTV in Baja

In our 5 years of caravanning to Cabo, the only people that get TV reception are those with Star Choice service from Canada. That wide beam service reaches down thru Central America. A few Americans we know have rented mailboxes in Canada just to sign up for Star Choice. A .75 meter antenna in the sand in Cabo gives excellent signal.
We are told that all other services, including Direct TV, are "spot beamed", making their reception area only a few hundred miles across.

RE: TV and Internet Service in Mexico

Can't speak for the other RV parks in San Carlos, but El Mirador (Link) has internet, cable TV and most other services.
If you are going to boondock, I would recommend Star Choice, the Canadian service, for sat TV. Hughes (either with a tripod or via a Datastorm dish) will give you good internet service. I wouldn't recommend Skype for service with sat internet for important calls, a cheap Meican cell phone would do the job, I noted a lot of ads in San Carlos for cell service.
We bought a cheap pay-as-you-go phone from Moviestar in Mexico and it worked well.

RE: Satellite tv in Mexico

Confirmed that Star Choice will provide you with the 75cm dish at no extra cost but you will need a tripod or some other way of supporting it. I bought a tripod from The Source (used to be Radio Shack) but many people make their own support pole and stand. Whichever method you use you need to weigh it down with full 1 gallon water bottles or rocks to prevent the wind from blowing it over.

RE: Southern baja, Bell or Star Choice? High Def or not?

We spent about 3 weeks in Teacapan, which is across the Gulf of California from the south tip of Baja, probably further south in terms of latitude. We were fortunate to have a Star Choice installer in a 5th wheel next to us, he lent us a spare SC receiver and we connected up to his 0.74 meter dish for the time that we were there.
The only one getting good signal strength from other TV services was a seasonal guy who has a 3 meter dish which he assembles each season, he needed it for Super Bowl weekend!
We just dumped our Expressvu service here at home for SC so we can have SC next winter down south.
You should also be aware that Bell will terminate your service if they find you are using the dish outside Canada, whereas SC will assist you on technical issues when you call in from Mexico.
A number of US folks down there have SC through services that provide Canadian addresses for them.

RE: Southern baja, Bell or Star Choice? High Def or not?

Leave the Bell at home. The only company that wide-beams as far as Mexico is Star Choice. Small dish works in Cabo San Lucas.

Southern baja, Bell or Star Choice? High Def or not?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I will be setting up to take my Bell Sat receiver on our trip to Mexico. We have 2 receivers at home , one is high def, one is not. I have 2 dishes on the roof at home ,one for high def one for the standard sat.
How do I set up the RV. I plan on using a tripod. Do I take one dish with the high def receiver and switch between satelites depending on which channels we watch , get a dual dish, or file the high def and take one dish and the standard reciever?
Do we even get Bell in Mexico or should we just shut our Bell off for the winter and get a Star Choice setup ?

RE: satelite tv

Star Choice is the satellite provider of choice in Ajijic which is on Lake Chapala about 30 miles south of Guadalajara. That's what we're planning on using when we move there.

Sorry I did not make myself clear.
This is the web site for Americans who wish to buy & subscribe to Star Choice. They will set you up with a Canadian post office box.
Star Choice will not sell directly to Americans, only Canadians, so do not go to the Star Choice web site. By following the above link, which is an American company in Northern USA, you can get satellite coverage as far as Cancun, or even Central America. We used it in the Baja as well and throughout the entire USA & Mexico and a person can pick which channels they want, including the American Networks. It works great and the above web site will also give the co ordinates for all major Mexico, Canada & USA cities. The dish is easy to set up, but having a satellite finder is also a big help. Hope this information helps, and my apologies.
I checked this website and can't find anything about setting up Star Choice for US citizens. Am I missing something?
