I have a slide in my new 5th. Since this is new to me, having an RV before, I read that having an awning over it helps keep the slide in good condition and cleaner. Is this a sales pitch or does it really help? I have taken a lot of advice to heart and purchased a Guardian 5th wheel lock. Does anyone have any other sugestions?

I have never had an awning over my slide so it is hard for me to say. However, what I do is climb the rear ladder, get on the roof and sweep off the top of the slide prior to retraction. I have wondered how an awning could help, but have concluded that the leaves and debris will still get under the awning and then it will be almost impossible to sweep it clean.

I don't have a slide but this has been asked before. you may want to do a search. Some have said if you put up an awning cover, you need to put a small Beach ball under it to keep the rain off. I guess they sagg real bad. Also you still need to sweep them off before retracting.

What andyc said about leaves getting under them is true. I saw that last fall while we were in the mountains. The leaves were falling fast & many. We watch a few people while they had to take a broom and try to sweep the leaves out from in between the sideout & the awning. Sure didn't loo like it was much fun to do.....

While you could go up on the roof to sweep off the top of the slide outs, it is much easier not having to worry about it. Plus, do you want to go up on the roof when it is wet?

We have an awning over our slide and once this winter my husband did sweep it before retraction - a lot of live oaks, a lot of acorns. Otherwise, stuff seems to blow off. We have never had a problem with it.

I have awning on my slide and think its well worth while.I don't like the idea of having bird******and leaves in side the MH. And don't feel like getting up there everytime to check it (to lazy)

andyc - I use my long handled MH wash brush to clean under the awning. I reach in from both sides. So far I haven't had a problem with leaves just dust once in awhile. A couple times I washed under there, just made sure the MH had a slight tilt to the outside.

WOW, I just checked the length of one of my slids and it is 14 feet long with cover over the top, I guess I'll need a real long broom if anything gets under it.

I have awnings on the slides of my Fifth Wheel. Its true, they do sag and they do hold rain to a certain extent but return to their original condition when the rain is drained off by lowering either end with a broom handle. Not a hugh task. They require the same occasional maintenance that your patio awning does to keep them looking presentable. Oh, and they do flap when its windy.

Awnings keep the top of the slide room clean and dry. Remember, when you retract the slide room, it comes entirely into the trailer carrying with it dust, dirt, moisture, bird droppings, dead bugs nicely screeded by the weather seals. You can imagine what gets caught inder the seals. The awning keeps much of that stuff off the top of the slide and out of the interior of your trailer. Im very satisfied with my slide awnings and would order them again.
