The last time I went across there it was ok, but I understand they have had some kind of road damage since, someone else more familiar with it can probably give you more information. It was a year and a half ago since we were on it....bob

Last year I drove from Raleigh NC to Oklahoma City via I40 twice..
Once in June and the last time in November.. Went across Tennessee both times.. In fact .. going across TN - was the best part of the entire trip. Very, very easy drive.. With the exception of a little construction on the west side of Nashville in June and a little construction near the airport..the rest of I40 ( in Tennessee ) was wonderful. It was just slower..going through these areas.

Could be this construction is complete now..or new started..

When I left for snowbird duty in mid December, one side of I40 near the NC/TN line was blocked by a landslide (common problem). As I'm from the area I would posit that the road will NOT be completely fixed until Spring.

As this blockage is after the I81 connection, I recommend that you jump on I81 N and continue to I26 E at Johnson City. Take I26 E to I40 at Asheville - this neatly takes you around any problems with road repairs.

Happy trails

Went up through there for Christmas, no trouble, seems like there was a bit of construction about Cookeville, but no problem. Did 140 to Asheville in November, Again some single lane, but not a problem.

Go through where the slide is about once per month slow down to about 20 mph for about 6 miles no big problem.
