I know ocean side campgrounds are hard to get into, but the wife and I would like to take our toy hauler to a beach location where we can drop the rear door of the trailer and enjoy the ocean view and sounds. Hook ups are not a concern, dry camping is fine. This trip would be without the toys, and we're looking for a relaxing, peaceful trip. What are your suggestions for such a location in southern to central California (other than Pismo)?

Try either of the state campgrounds at Morro Bay. right on the ocean, nice and quiet, and not too expensive, around $20 a day.
You also might get to meet Tony, the moderator of the Full Timing Forum there.
Spent 3 days there in Feb and loved it.

25 miles north of San Diego, Cardiff State Beach or Carlsbad State Beach. Spots available for just such camping. VERY difficult to get reservations at Cardiff, dunno about Carlsbad. From Cardiff you can watch beginner surfers from your campsite or walk 4 miles north to "Swami's" and watch the pros surf. Cross over old Hwy 101 and you'll find VeeGee's bakery nearby. Outragious fat pills.

Also, check out San Clemente State Park (http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=646) or Doheny State Beach (http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=645). Both are very close to the beach - SC is up on a bluff overlooking the beach, Doheny is right down on it.

McGrath State Beach in Oxnard is not exactly on the ocean. You have to walk several hundered yards to get to the ocean and you really cannot see it from your camp site. I spend several weekends a year there and it is one of my favorites. Carpenteria is another nice place but its limited on the size of vehicle you can get in.
Theres a place called Seacliff just north of Ventura. This is basically parking along side of the highway just off the coastline. Theres really no beach to play on. Farther up is ElCapitan, again its a good walk to the ocean.

There is a place just south of Oxnard I believe called La Jolla, it has campsites on the beach but its hard to get a spot in the summer.

If you want to bring your toys and head up north, Pismo is the place. You can park directly on the beach and race your toys up/down all day long.

You can find a bunch of california sites at this link.

The most relaxing place I've found is Jalama Beach just south of Lompoc off of Highway 1. Great secluded beach camprgound with great views. We've camped there numerous times. The have primitive spots right next to the beach. We like to stay at the elec/water spots on the top of the hill for the great views. The worst thing about it is the county parks dept. doesn't take reservations, so it's first come first serve. During the summer months, if you want to stay the weekend you have to drive there on Tues. to put your name on the list, drive back out on Wed/Thurs/Fri for the 3:00 camp call, ready to occupy your space if selected. If you aren't there, you are removed from the list. it's about a 14 mile drive off of highway 1, on a windy road to get there. That being said, in my opinion, it's worth it. A couple of these have already been mentioned. There is seacliff just north of Ventura (you park on the old 101) North of Santa Barbara is Refugio and Gaviota (on the beach) El Capitan is semi on the Beach. As mentioned Jalama is great, South West of Lompoc off Hwy 1 Summer is tough to get into there. Also is Morro Bay area one is next to the estuary and the other is on the beach. Of course none of these are on the beach like Pismo.
