Thanks for all the advice...just a note for all...we only need info on short trips out of Phoenix...we've done a lot of the rest of AZ..i.e. Canyon de Chelly, Sedona, Flagstaff, Grand Canyon, etc...just need more 'local' stuff.
Shall perhaps head to the things near Apache Junction this weekend...they sound interesting...shall try Prescott later...sounds good too.

The drive to Roosevelt Dam, Apache Trail is really nice. Narrow roads near the end. We met several RVs and cars pulling boats that had to back up on some turns, etc. But it is well worth the drive. If you haven't been to Organ Stop Pizza in Mesa, you might consider that. It has become a "MUST" on our trips there now. A fantastic organ concert while eating pizza. And I mean, these guys can play anything! Everything from classical to broadway to sing-along, by ear and by request. We also took a half day trip out to Fountain Hills last year as we were looking at the municipal park there for possible future RV stays. What a lovely little community. Nice shops. Huge fountain that really sprays high every hour--like several hundred feet. We got coffee and a goodie from a local shop and just sat and enjoyed. The Heard Museuum is very worth the visit, and what a nice gift shop. As is the botanical garden in Phoenix. And have you visited the ruins at Casa Grande--the Hohokkim, I believe. Fascinating to know they grew cotton and other agricultural crops there with irrigation, and then all disappeared at some point. This year we want to visit the Desert Museum in Tucson. Our last visit there we went to Saguaro Natl. Park but didn't know about this place. Have you been to Rawhide? Enjoyed a meal at Rustler's Roost?

East of Phoenix, near Apache Junction is Goldfield. Its an old ghost town where mining took place. Great day out for adults and children. They have a saloon and the sheriff patrols the streets, I think its Wyatt Earp!LOL. Also a drive down to Tombstone is great..probably no tourists this time of year..it is south of Benson, possibly far for a day trip?
Have a great time whatever you do!

Well, you HAVE to go out to Pinnacle Peak for a steak.
Take some time on the ASU campus - interesting place.
Do go down to Casa Grande and visit the ruins. And, of course, Oak Creek Canyon.

Our daughter called yesterday from Phoenix she said that Rawhide will be closing permanently going to upper end development projects. If you want to go there you need to go very shortly. If you don't know what Rawhide is it is an old western town replica with shows and gun fights.

We rode the Verde Canyon RR yesterday. Near four hour ride so we had a full day. We both enjoyed it and are glad we went. Some of Red Rock formations as good or better than around Sedona.
Both padded inside seating and unpadded open air car available as you choose. We rode open on the way out, stood by safty rails a lot, and spent about 1/2 the time inside on way back. It does board about 5 minutes NW of Cottonwood.
We went up 89A from Prescott and through Jerome. Glad I saw the road I had read about in the TV only, but, I will not repeat that ride. Would be better in a small Honda than an F-250. Go through Cottonwood instead unless you want the adventure.
