Amen, Jim. My husband has worked in the same place 23 years. Loved it the first 19. Could do no wrong. Then along comes a guy who thinks everybody should choose work over everything else. A screamer if things aren't just exactly the way he thinks they should be. Then you have these kids fresh out of college that kiss*** all the way to the top. They're not all like that but he sees a lot of it. It's just hard to see someone you care about work so hard and be so miserable. Oh, well, he's just putting in his time until he can retire. Then we'll buy a big RV and travel the good ol' USA or wherever the road takes us. On the flip side I love my job. I'm a one on one teachers aide for a little boy in a wheelchair. It's very challenging and rewarding.

My parents taught me to work hard as a duty to the employer as well as a Biblical foundation. I have found that it is generally true that hard work is rewarded, except in the political setting I am in now. The harder I work to get things done, the more grief I get for making things happen. ONLY IN GOVERNMENT would this happen.

I am thinking of hucking my 20 years experience and degrees in the trash and starting over, just not sure what to do that will earn me a comparable salary...I did the "consultant" thing which wasn't any fun and my specialities are generally filled by "big" companies...Thanks for letting me rant.

The norm for people working for companies now is any job is indispensable. You can be replaced in a heart beat. People don't have job security like they had a few years ago. A person can go through six or more employers in a life time.
In my area where I live you don't see teenagers with part time jobs. I guess it's beneath them. They just go to college and parents are hoping they find a good job. Some kids after college are in no hurry in finding a job and would rather play around first. Some do get jobs and it's not what they expected. I have a friend and her son went to college, had a good job and decided he didn't like it so he's back home with his parents. Parents are in distraught.
My husband and son are both Journeyman Lineman and there jobs are in demand. What's going on is no one wants to become a blue collar worker. My husband tells young men about the job with security and benefits, plus can earn between hundred thousand to 175,000 or more a year. You tell them you have to become a laborer first and go through the apprentice program and it's like, Oh I can't do that.
