We're hoping to go west across Nevada and into California next June/July. I'd like to spend a night somewhere around Lake Tahoe. We'd normally choose a CG with shady sites and fire rings or pits. We don't need internet access and don't care to be close to a casino. We have a 34 ft RV and no toad, so being close to the lake would be very nice.

Carol, the City of South Lake Tahoe runs a campground right across the street from the lake. Funny, they named it "Campground By The Lake". I strongly recommend reservations, made well in advance, for the time you plan to be traveling. You're going to love both the camp and the area!

We stay at camp Richardson when in South Lake Tahoe. We really enjoy the camp, with it's beach, resturaunt and bar.

Camp Richardson is a very popular campground, especially with people with kids, but it's definitely not to everyone's tastes. Sites are very close together, it's always very crowded and "busy" during the summer months, and it can be noisy from the traffic and all the "activity" going on. Not for me, but YMMV.

I second "Campground by the Lake". Been their many times, lots of room for a 34' RV. Most all sites have full hook up's, picknic tables and fire pits. You can walk across the street to the lake. Very scenic and a short distance to the Casino's. They even have a shuttle from the campground to downtown.

If you want a more rustic experience, try the small, old RV park on the less developed and quieter north side of the lake at Tahoe Vista. The park is across the street from a lakeside park, next to a nice restaurant and ice cream shop and kayak rental. Don't remember the name but it will probably turn up in a search.

While i agree that Tahoe Vista is much less developed than the South shore, I don't believe that the park you mention is acceptable. The only one i know of there is a mobile home park with full time residents in not so hot of a neighborhood, but to each their own.
There really isn't any RV parks on this side of the lake, but there is Sugar Pine State Park near Tahoma that is very nice and rustic.

Just this past summer we stayed at Fallen Leaf Lake Campground near South Lake Tahoe. There are no hook-ups, but generators were allowed during the day. There is no view of either lake, but both are in walking distance. The sites are paved and roomy, and the Ponderosa and Jeffrey Pines are so fragrant. There are fire rings. It was only full on the weekends. To me it seemed like we had discovered a place that very few people knew about.

We drove through Camp Richardson, and compared to Fallen Leaf, it looked like a dust bowl. I guess it's the lack of hook-ups that keeps the campers away.

Very good choice! One of my favorite campgrounds at the lake.

Stayed at Zephyr Cove last March.
Beautiful place, with a good view and a short walk to the lake.
Don't remember about fire rings.
