We are retiring within 10 months and are hoping to do a Mexican tour, including Copper Canyon. Does anyone have any recommendations for a tour company? Will there be any problem taking our dog? Thanks.

The flat-bed rail car tours of Copper Canyon no longer exist. The railroad discontinued allowing them because of safety concerns. There are still Copper Canyon trips available but they travel by regular passenger car and stay in hotels.

The big three are Adventure, Fantasy and Tracks.

http://adventurecaravans.com/

http://fantasyrvtours.com/

http://trackstoadventure.com/

I have been on a Adventure caravan. I like their itineraries and cost a little better than Fantasy. Didn't care for Tracks itineraries or costs.

I had a great time and would highly recommend an Adventure Caravans trip.

States I have spent the night in my current rig, bought three years ago.
Have RV'ed through 49 states and been in all 50, just short of my half-century.

The 3 tour companies that are mentioned are all expensive and not always guided by bilingual individuals. If you want, what we consider the best tour company, then use Mexico Adventures Ltd. who will always have a bilingual wagonmaster and tail gunner, that lives in the country and is very knowledgeable of their own country. Also the cost will be anywhere from $1100 to $2000 less than the 3 companies already mentioned, for exactly the same or sometimes better facilities and sights. The company is owned by the former Director of Tourism for the state of Chihuahua and all of the people we met with the company are great and very helpful. we have no interest in the company other than a friendship with them. There are many on this forum that have been on their Caravans and will vouch for every word of this.

I must be really slow tonight. I didn't see anywhere on your Mexico Adventure link where they did RV caravan tours. Saw lots of reference to hotels.

Also the tours were very short. Didn't see any 40 plus day tours.

I'm all for something other than the three I mentioned, but I'm not aware of any lengthy extensive tours. I do know Baja Winters does a Copper Canyon along with Mazatlan. But it is only 20ish days.

Sorry Luke, I posted the wrong website for them, as they have 2. Here is the correct website to the Copper Canyon, west coast tours for Mexico Adventures Ltd. They still show the piggy back trains, but under their itinerary, they say it has changed.

The Mexico Adventures 23 day Copper Canyon is $400 less than Adventure Caravans. Mexico Adventures has 5 tours. Adventure has 14. I'd say that if one of Mexico Adventures itineraries interested someone it might be a good option to Adventure Caravans. But, I didn't compare the daily trips, excursions, meals, etc.

I looked at Mexico Adventures Ltd and it does have better pricing and looks well organized. Has anyone ever used the pet service to look after their pets while taking the train? This is one of my major concerns.

The company has arrangements with the CG where you leave the RV, to take care of your pets and the ones we spoke to were very happy with the service. Juan Rodriquez is very through in the care and consideration of his customers.

We did Tracks last Feb. Guess we were among the last to be on the Flatbed train. It was a great trip. Tracks puts on a first class tour, good restaurants, fine entertainment, the parks were the best available (which isn't saying much for some of the parks) but we always felt safe. The Trailmaster and tailgunner were prepared, attentive, and gave the entire group a sense of comfort. In short, I enjoyed the trip, and would travel with Tracks again. We did meet up with other tours during our travel and they also were very happy with their group. We took our dog on the train, and it was a bit of a problem. It was difficult to get the dog up and down at stops, and the dog was not allowed at any group activities. We have a 6 lb dog. I don't know if the dog would be allowed on the passenger train at all. If we took a tour again I would confirm with the wagonmaster in advance that the dog would be welcome either at all or at limited events. I would ask for the confirmation in writing or by e-mail.
