I have enjoyed this thread. I am a native and lifelong resident of the rural south. I have heard many of these sayings. I am adding some I've heard. I use a lot of these without thinking because they are so much a part of my background.

...dark as Egypt

...ill as a hornet

...raining like a cow a peein' on a flat rock

...when pigs fly

...as useless as the teats on a boar hog

...ugly as homemade sin

...graveyard dead

...dead as a doornail

...if I could buy her for what she's worth and sell her for what she thinks she's worth

...doesn't know his behind from a hole in the ground

...couldn't find his way out of a wet paper sack

...old as Methuselah

...run like a scalded dog

...crooked as a dog's hind leg

...lies like a yellow dog

...preaching to the choir

...colder than a well digger's butt

...flat as a flitter

...run like a striped ape

...you ain't just whistlin' Dixie

...the sun don't shine on the same dog's fanny all afternoon

...I'm so hungry I could eat the south end of a northbound mule

...grinning like a mule a eatin' briars through a barbed wire fence

...kicks like a young mule

...muleheaded

...a Tennessee toad strangler (a heavy rain)

...She's/he's from Missouri (a stubborn person--My mother said that about me often)

...mean as a snake

...I was mad enough to spit fire

...It'll all come clean on washday (the truth will come out)

...all over God's creation

I didn't mean to hog up the thread.

Thanks to all for sharing these colorful expressions with us.

Oh my gosh! I have heard so many of these.

Dad....If you get in that road and get killed, I will beat the H**l out of ya.(we lived on a paved road, never worried about the dirt roads.

Grannie.....If you don't stop, I am gonna beat your BRT.

Grand dad,(after I smoked in front of him when I was around 28 or 29)...there is a fire on one end, and a fool on the other. (I never smoked in front of him again!)

I can remember my Dad saying he "was busier than a one arm paperhanger with the crabs"

"I'm gonna take that away until you learn how to use it!"

From my Southern Granny:

"I'll git to it right now in a minute." It meant either now, next year or any time in between. Mostly it meant "Don't pester me!".

"Gal, I'm agonna rip yore arm off and beat you plumb to death with it!"

"She's so dern bowlegg-ed she couldn't pen a hog up in a ditch."

"The boy's one brick shy of a load." (he's dumb.)

There are a zillon more I can't think of right now.

Thought of another: "Want what you got, then you'll always be happy!".
