Here is my take on sleeping the 4 of us in the SMB. We only have 2 kids, but they are teenagers. You don't say how old/ big your kids are or how big you think they'll be when they stop going camping with you.

My SMB has 2 parallel longitudal couches in the back that make into a fairly big bed. 3 of us can sleep mostly comfortably there. (6 seat belts).

There is a transverse side chair behind the driver’s seat that makes into a bed and we have a folding platform bed that goes across the front seats. (3 total seat belts).

Since we are very near GVWR when full, I'd suggest the 3500 (dual rear wheels to get the extra 1800# carrying capacity. With my GVWR, there is no way I can use all my seat belts.

Full disclosure (actually, its in my sig) - we ended up buying a small TT as a "spare bedroom". We do take 2 week trips - then the extra space and especially the shorter transition time from wake to sleep mode really help out.

On the topic of trailers suitable for towing by a Class B, here is a 700lb model that I find very interesting: http://www.kamparoo.com/vacationer.htm

I enjoy reading everyone's opinion on this subject. So I thought I would add mine. We have a Roadtrek RS which we love, however we are moving to a custom class C. We have spent over 40 nights in the RT YTD, most of those with 4 people, 2 adults, 2- 10 year olds. There just is not enough room for us. This is one in a number of motorhomes we have had. We think what is perfect for us is a custom Born Free rear door cab over, only 2 inches longer than the RT but 18" wider and much better sleeping, cooking and bathroom accomaditions for us.
What we will give up, the most fun driving RV we have ever owned, plus 20mpg.
Pick what you are going to buy based on how you are going to use it, but most important USE IT.
Also, just a word of caution, when we travel fully loaded with gear 4 people and our bikes, we are over our CCC, although it has not been a problem. yet?
