I have a 32' Laredo fifth wheel that we love. The problem is with work schedules etc we only get out once every couple of months. Of course I have to drive the 2007 Chevy Silverdo 2500 HD to work every day. It's a 6.00 Vortec gasser. Comming up on 3.60 a gal is getting bad.
My possible solution. Trade the fifth wheel on a small C or B+ (there's only two of us)and the truck on a Smart Car or Honda Fit for work commute (26 miles each way).
I figure the payments on the Class C would be simular to the truck ($489) and the little car to the fifth wheel ($225). I would still have the camping outings and the savings in work gas would be a bunch.
Does this sound like a plan, any recomendations?? Rented a Class C years ago but never owner one.

We went from a 30" FW to a 19'HTT and now a 31" Class C. All I know I want to go camping every weekend now. When we had the trailers I would not take it out unless we were going to able to camp at least 4 days. Too much trouble if shorter. Now we will take the minnie to the beach for a day and have a blast!
We traded our expy in on a mazda 3 and it makes a huge difference of our fuel costs for the month.
So I vote that it is a great plan....
Have a great time camping,
Terry

We went from a 35' class A to a 29' class C.

I am thinking of doing something similar. Selling my 30' TT, the Dodge Ram 2500, and getting a Class C. I already bought the VW Beetle for commuting. It makes 0 sense for me to be paying for a truck when fuel costs $4.20 a gallon (diesel) for the small amount of camping we do these days.

Are Class A, Class B, Class C legally defined? I don't understand. Can you provide me with a source for the definition of these legal terms?
If not, B+ C-, A+ and even Class X are perfectly reasonable classifications for an RV.
Class B, historically, have represented a certain short length. The new, longer Bs, are trying differentiate themselves from an old stereotype. They are not the old typical conversion van, they are small Class Cs.
Unless, of course, there are some legal definitions that I'm not aware of.

It seeems to make sense the way you have it figured out. We traded in our 25' travel trailer on a new motorhome last summer, and traded in a Nissan Titan pickup on a small SUV.
You might want to check the trade-in market before to take the leap. I read a newspaper article the other day saying that so many people are trying to trade-in large SUVs and pickups, that some dealers won't take them at any price, since they have difficulty selling them.
Good luck - hope it works out for you.

The nice surprise for me was that the insurance for the motorhome costs less than it did for the pickup.

Not sure I would call them legal definitions, but they are definitions adopted by the RVIA organization. They do not have a Class B+ nor Class Super C - merely marketing terms. The RVIA website RVIA is now member oriented requiring a password. Here is a similar definition of RV types Click here .

We traded in our 35' fifth wheel for a 2007 Navion last year. Sold the Dodge Ram gasser and bought a 1996 Ford pickup to drive to work. We loved the convenience of the Navion which averaged 18 mpg when we went to Perry in March. However, we weren't happy with the couch bed which had to be made up every nite. Since we get up in the nite (that older age problem) we wouldn't sleep in the overhead cab. So we just traded again for 2008 Navion iQ. We won't need the large dinette so it will be left made as the bed. Happy with some other features of this one so we finally found what works for us.

That's exactly why we went with a Class C. Didn't want to buy a truck and have to drive it every day of the week, didn't want to hitch/unhitch all the time. The C is nice, just get in and go. Sometimes we just take it out for the day. We loved the Navion with the 18 mpg, but realized it wouldn't work for our family. A bit too small for us at this point.
