I havent' towed a travel trailer in a few years... but I got 15 with my 93 Dodge W/Cummins towing a 25 foot Aerolite, at highway speeds... generally, I was the fastest guy on the road, running 60 to 65 and 75 on the interstate.
I made one run up the Gorge from Astoria to Pendleton at an averaged 79MPH, and only got 13.
Before that, I used a Crew Cab Dodge W/318 and the worst it ever did was 10.5 crossing the continental divide 3 times and the best I ever got was 14 on a long, slow run through the Cascades. This was towing a 27 foot Boles Aero, all up weight around 10,500 - 11,000.
The Crew Cab generally got 12 to 14 empty on the highway, and the diesel consistently got 19 solo. While the Crew Cab didn't win many uphill races with the trailer on, nobody ever outpulled the Cummins except for other Cummins, even those guys with the "banks" stickers Then again, I was a fuel system technician back in those days, too. I earned my living making them "go".

We have the FJ Cruiser and we absolutely love that vehicle to pieces!!! We occasionally tow our 18 ft Eco (3200 lbs at time of sale - heavier of course when loaded) with the Cruiser; however, the gas mileage is pretty bad, I'd say 8-10. I wouldn't use it to tow in the mountains, just don't think it has enough power, but it is fine in Texas! We use our Toyota Tundra, a pickup I absolutely love too, to tow when we need more power.

We have a Toyota FJ Cruiser as well and just returned from an 8,000KM trip across Canada and the U.S. We drove in every terrain, including mountains and the FJ handled it all with only one exception. The last mountain climb from Jasper to Banff and definately the steepest was a real struggle for the FJ, towing our 4500lb Jayco 19H. I couldn't maintain speed above 50KM/hour (about 30 mph for my American friends)We averaged both on the open prairies and in the mountains about 20 litres/100KM or about 12 MPG. We normally get about 10 litres/100Km or about 25 MPG. It would likely have been worse had I not installed the K&N air charger before embarking on our trip. May not be the best towing vehicle, but man is it fun to drive!!

gheicher wrote: I know this is a bit unrealistic for most people on this forum, but just for comparison I have a very small folding Alite trailer (under 500 lbs) that I tow with my 2.2L Subaru. It will get 25 mpg towing on secondary roads through the hills of PA.
Sweet rig. I tow a 1,700 lb, 06 Aliner LXE with a 2.4l Chevy Cobalt SS.
It averaged 22.7 MPG towing through the Arkansas mountains on last year's vacation. The reduced frontal area of our Aliners makes more of a difference than weight, as my camper is 3 times the weight of yours, yet gets about the same mileage with similar TVs. I get 25mpg at 60mph on near level ground. I need to drop my tow speed to 45 MPH to break 30 MPG though.

We tow an 18 ft t@da travel trailer with a Volvo XC70 wagon. Most of our towing has been in our local hilly area. We get between 22-24 MPG, just a few MPG less than we get without towing. I drive about 55 MPH, 60 MPH isn't going to get me there much sooner, I'd rather save the $$ to spend on my vacation than at the pump.
