We are trying to save $$'s and using the diesel truck for local errands is making less and less sense. I'm considering getting a scooter just for local transport where-ever we are staying.

After a little on-line shopping I see that LOTS of people are having this idea? Are any RV'ers doing this already? Any advice?

It seems like a 50cc scooter will only weigh a few hundred pounds, can to 40 mph and can get 100+mpg? Although it looks like you couldn't put two people on it... Anyone figure out how to get a set of golf clubs on one? (that would be one of my more frequent local trips...)

We've been looking...some models are sold out and hard to get. We would use it mostly to run errands from home but the smaller ones might fit in the bed while towing our 5th wheel.

Two years ago I had a 115 cc Kinetic Nova (cost about $3300). It would take 2-up and would go about 45 MPH that way. With only me, it would go about 50 MPH. Great gas mi. and fun to ride. After a year I wanted something bigger,,,,so I got a Yamaha 400 cc Majesty ( cost $4300)(loved it). They were both automatic and would go great (easy to operate). Here in Canada you need a MC lisence when the CC's are more than 50 cc's. Either of those could be taken with you on a front-mounted class 4 hitch 1 ton truck.
Then I got serious and bought a 650 Yamaha V Star, and I love it. Now I am looking for a toy hauler to take the MC with us.

Get something that suits your needs and what you feel you can handle for the next few years.

I just bought a new 150cc Scooter for $1600 and love it. It's small enough to haul on the back of my toad, (240lbs), but large enough to travel in traffic comfortably. My advice? If you've never road a bike in traffic, you are in for a shock. Just be careful and watch "every vehicle" around you.

Just don't kid yourself that the idea is to save money. You will never recover the cost of the scooter, the insurance and license in fuel cost savings. Buy one-they are fun!!

In 5 months I'd recoup. I did the math. License and insurance on a scooter are nil in comparison. I looked at what I would use in the truck fuel wise each month doing all my running around and I'd have the cost of the scooter, ins. and licensing recouped in 5 months. The rest of the (7 months) of the year I'd be seeing one heck of a savings!! Now when I say scooter I'm not talking a Harley Road King. Do the math, you just might surprise yourself, but then again everyones needs, driving habits and all that are different.

I have a 50cc and a 250cc. Both from China. Both have been good to me so far. About 1800 miles on the 250 (had it first), and about 75 miles on the 50cc. I plan on taking the 50cc with us camping. The dealer was selling off brand new 2007 models for half price... so I couldn't pass it up.

TIP - if you are not handy and cannot work on one, do not buy one of the cheaper Chinese made scooters, they are not like a Honda, Yamaha, etc. Stick with the Japanese models, even used ones can be found for good deals. The Chinese models come with very little support after the sale, and they basically send you replacement parts. There is a reason they are cheaper. I suggest you take a look at this site if you are thinking about a Chinese scooter... SCOOTDAWG FORUM

Don't forget maintenance. Plus you won't get as many miles out of a tire. Don't forget to price those too.

But if you do get one, just be careful out there. Even with our bigger motorcycles we still have to ride like we are invisible.

Got mine a couple of months a go from Extreme-scooters. It's a Bali 150 Chinese but pretty neat. Ins is $75 a year and registration is $20 something. Initial price was $1270. delivered to the house. I use it for work and it will carry 2. I had it up to 60mph yesterdy for the first time. Sure beats driving my 2500HD Duramax to work. However it's to heavy to take with the 5er.

I agree with an earlier poster. Do not buy a Chinese-made scooter. You may be able to work on it, but if you need any replacement parts -- forget it! Go with a Honda, Yamaha, etc. You won't be sorry.
