You make an excellent point about going at speed. We are avid dualsport riders and recently traded up from the Honda CR250X to the KTM 430EXC for exactly that reason. The Hondas were struggling at 55 mph while the KTM glides along and still has another gear available.
The KTM is already set up to be street legal (we had to put kits on the Hondas) and only weighs 251 pounds (dry weight). With the electric starter the larger engine size is not a problem.
My issue with scooters is that they don't have the handling or engine response to get you out of a bad situation. JMHO

Some of you more agile, (read younger), folks won't understand this, but some of the reason I went with a scooter is I can't hoist my leg up over the seat of a regular motorcycle like I used to do. I also don't have the desire to go 70 mph on a bike any longer. My 150cc is plenty big enough for me and I'm a big guy.

WRONG!!
The wife will be getting 80mpg as opposed to 14mpg with her durango.Her round trip daily is 25 miles. She still works till the house sells which is not working out so well .It'll take time but it will happen.We take delivery tommorow.It is 250cc so it will ride us both at highway speed and still fit on my rear carrier at 325 pounds.All for $1795 delivered.

The Piaggio MP3 can stand upright in its locked position, but you cannot ride it that way. It needs to lean for it to work correctly. It has very complicated front end geometry as the 2 wheels are in the front. Nice scooters, but very expensive.

I wasn't able to justify paying 6k for the scooter (something for the wife and I that will actually move us both at a reasonable pace) with the fuel savings / comfort.
That buys 1200 gallons at $5 gallon. 30,000 miles on our Vue for the same amount of money.

Yes and in 30,000miles that cheap scooter will be toast/ broken or you will!!!! people do not see you on a scooter I road a MC for years until I got tired of being run over.
in the 70s gas crisis everyone tried every gimick to save $$ in the end the ones who cut back their driving and didn't spend $$$ solely to save $$$ won.
If you want a scooter get one for the fun ... they are, but for me just too dangerous on the road Just watch the news soon you'll see stories about all the injuries from inexperienced riders etc etc.
Of course YMMV to ea there own only my opinion

There are stories everyday of injuries in a car wreck,lets not look only at motorcycles.I've been riding for 34 years and have not had an accident.I can't say that about my cars,I've had 3 (none my fault).

someone who's older never ridden and hops on a scooter a MC with no training is safe??? I've ridden for years ( more than you) and I would not sugesst it ... just to save gas if the want to rode fine .. they accept the risk but riding a scooter to save gas and take the golf clubs along to the course??? come on!

Man! That would take me a LONG tome to hit 30K miles just running to the store, post office ect and even doing camp checks. I figure I'd hit your 30K mark 350 mile per month in about 7.1 years!! Oh wait how much did I save just using that scooter for simple errands in just a year????
Do the math, it might surprise you. I don't think anyone is planning on long trips with the scooters, just some running around the local area, errands, simple stuff like that and yes indeed you would sure save on fuel. Big time. You'd pay for that scooter LONG before the 30K mile mark.
