I have never had a problem with stolen gas or diesel but then mine is insured with Smith and Wesson.

I once lent my station wagon to a friend to move his stuff from a town about 250 miles away. He called me from a gas station a couple of miles away, before he left for the distant town. I had forgotten to give him the key to the gas cap. I haven't had a locking cap since - they're more trouble than they're worth.

No problems here in Eagle river. My truck is in the driveway all night. I have a very anxious dog who barks if someone's breathing too hard out front.
If I catch anyone trying to steal my fuel I'll chase the little *&^% down the street with my fireplace poker and let the dog chew on his ankle a bit.

Isn't it interesting that EVERY post in this thread has been from some one who lives in the USA, and no one from Canada has spoken about gas theft in their area ?
I wonder why that may be ?

There are more US members reading here, Jim, so that would explain the lack of Canadian responses!  Don't forget that Surrey, BC, Canada is the car theft capital of North America. That would suggest that we should be VERY concerned with gas theft in some areas of Canada.
Gas is very expensive here in Vancouver (almost $6.00 a gallon - OUCH!), so I've been thinking about a locking gas cap - but I can relate to the story about lending the car out with the locking cap and forgetting to lend the key. The same thing happened to me with my mom's car and her locking club (locks the steering wheel). Don't need a key to lock the club and I thought the club key was on the key ring with the car keys...it wasn't. I was stuck in a different city with no way to get the club off. I had to take a cab a LONG way to get those keys and then have someone drive me back.
I say leave your gas cap as it is - unless you park your vehicle in an area that has a lot of theft. Costs DH over $150 to fill his one tank and I am thinking he should get one, because he parks at a park and ride that area gets lots of theft.

What has car theft got to do with gas theft? Besides, I always thought Regina was the car theft capital of Canada :-)
So far we have been lucky here in Regina. I have not had any gas stolen but I imagine in some of the shadier areas there could be. Our MH has the gas fillers inside a locked compartment but as mentioned would not be a real hardship to get into. Mine runs on propane so for the most part it's not a problem. I always keep a little gas in one of the tanks but that is used for emergencies if I run it out of propane, which has happen a couple times  Our other vehicles all run on gas but so far no problems

So far, everyone who has responded has said that it isn't a problem in their area...I wonder why that may be?
In general, Alaska is a low-crime area. I don't have a locking cap, but I don't think you would have to be unduly paranoid to do so. It only takes one dirtbag in a 100,000 population to steal your fuel, and that can happen anywhere.

I use a locking gas cap on RV to ensure what I want and put in the tank goes in the tank.
