We drove up the Alaskan Highway in May, and in a few weeks, we'll have to decide whether to head home via the Cassier Highway, or back down the BC portion of the Alcan.
Has anyone been on the Cassier Highway recently? What's it like this year? And is most of the road OK for larger motorhomes towing cars?
We've heard all kinds of stories....but haven't seen too much that's from this year.
If you've been on the Cassier Highway recently, please let us know! And please feel free to offer suggestions on places to stop and stay! Thanks!

Haven't been on the cassiar since last year, but have heard it's about the same for numbers of construction spots, rough gravel, etc.
BUT!, if you don't go down it you will miss Stewart and Hyder during the best bear feeding season. Go for it. Wish I was there. jmho, lou

I can't give you any conditions on the Cassiar this year( do a search and others have commented on this forum earlier this year) but have driven it 4 times since we started driving up to Alaska in the late 90s, going home twice (late July/early August) and driving up AND back in 2006. It has improved each time although it does have some rough areas, and is not as fast as the Alaska Highway. But to miss Hyder and the bears is not in the cards for us...we will return south in late July again this year on the Cassiar. Here is a link to a video my wife shot in 2006 of a wolf, a momma Griz and 2 cubs all fishing for salmon in Fish Creek!Wolf and Bears at Hyder 2006

I was on the northern section (Alaska Highway to Dease Lake, in to Telegraph Creek and back) last week and it was in excellent shape. Lots of construction and major delays when I was southbound, but everything was cleared up when northbound 2 days later. Well, except for the fuel tanker crash that closed the highway, but that's just one of those s*** happens things ( http://www.explorenorth.com/wordpress/?p=250 )

The Cassiar is such a great drive it should not be missed. We were on it about three weeks ago and found the northern end a bit rough but the rest is fine. Be sure to take some time to go to Stewart and Hyder (the Glacier Highway).

Murray, we were held up by a different fuel tanker crash northbound just south of Bell II, a few weeks ago now. Wonder why the guys are having problems this year.
However, we found the road north of Boya Lake to be a bit rough this year. Probably didn't help that we went through there in a hail storm. Good Hope Lake to Boya Lake is under construction with loose gravel, but it was a smooth road. Other than that though, the road was in good condition.

Just came off the Cassiar Hwy southbound.
It's all in decent condition. The section between Good Hope Lake and Boya Lake is now seal-coated (paved) and in great shape. North of Boya to the Alaska Hwy there are some rough sections, but not too bad.
The repaving around Bob Quinn Lake might give you a short delay as it is down to single lane in some places.
They were regrading just north of Dease Lake (gravel/dirt section) so everything was wet and made a fine mess of our just cleaned truck/fiver.
It was also slightly muddy each side of the Stikine River on our way south. It was VERY muddy on this section when we went north three weeks ago.
The bear sightings were excellent on our way south this year.
And the fish & chips at the bus in Hyder was as good as always.

The scenery and wildlife on the Cassier is NOT to be missed. We ued that route last Sept, went through mud and gravel and narrow roads at some places, but our 40ft mh made it just fine.
The bears in Hyder were worth the mud and dirt from the road. If we are luck enough to return to Alaska, we will travel that same route again on the return trip.
See as much as you can, I am sitting here reading this year's adventures and it make me so envious....................

We are considering coming south on the Cassier when we leave sometime in September, how late are the bears viewable at Hyder?
We're eventually heading to Wisconsin for a visit, so don't want to come down the coast side unless it's very worthwhile.
