I have both and the rate for full timer insurance on my 07 Melbourne was cheaper than Progressive for the same coverage.

We have National Interstate on our 5er and ProgressiveDrive on our truck. Now first of all go right now to RVAdvantage They are the leaders in fulltime RV insurance and can find the right insurance for you. They are located in Iowa and are midwest friendy. We use them for our Ins. and do not have any intrest in them, except the great service they provide us.

We have been domiciled in SD since 2002 using Alternative Resources. They are by far the largest and oldest and do an excellent job. We use Dogherty Insurance next door to Alternative. We carry full replacement value , fulltimer and Mexico coverage which is all in one price with National Interstate, they have Progressive which is a little higher. We also get a diminishing deductible. Yes, you do have to go there every five years for drivers license and it is also next door. They have a website. When you call talk to Paul, tell him Six Pence recommended them.
No sales tax in SD but you can deduct sales tax from your federal income tax using the SD sales tax table. They have no income tax.
We also use Gary Conklin at Conklin Law in Sioux Falls for wills, power of attorney and living will.

WOW, what an eye opener this thread has been. MDW and I are hoping to be semi-fulltimers in a few years, as soon as DW can work her JOB into an online position. At that juncture in our lives we're going to try being semi-retired roadies. If we can survive wintering over in the Southwest for a couple of years, we'll try the fulltimer lifestyle. Who knows by then we may win the lottery and just hit the road, the heck with work!!!!!!!! I just want to say thank you for all of the insight you've given us, and hope to meet some of you on the road. Stay safe, and enjoy life to it's fullest.

Not sure about the above...I KNOW we had to pay a 3% sales tax when registering our new 5er in Emery, SD...

The previous poster is correct about there being no general sales tax in SD. The 3% you paid to register your vehicle is an "excise" tax. Yeah, I know, a tax is a tax is a tax.

We sent an online quote request to RVAdvantage the other day and haven't heard back from them. We just sent off an email with a nudge. We actually attended a workshop with one of their employees at the Life on Wheels Conference this past March in Tucson (which, by the way, we can't rave enough about! We learned so much!) We got a lot of good information, but also were concerned with some mis-information at that particular workshop. That is the instructor said that your RV can be insured in one state and registered in another. According to other workshops and another insurance representative that I spoke to -- this is a big No, No.
Just FYI.
We'll hope for the best and really do appreciate all the help here.
To the person who posted his/her thought about maybe trying the southwest, I can tell you that we're from MA and thought that we could never bear to be away from the ocean. However, our children live in the west and we wanted to be closer to them (so therefore no FL for us) and we wintered in Tucson. We loved it! As one transplant of 15 years stated, "We may not have the ocean/water, but the sky is blue everyday." If you want any other thoughts on our decision, please feel free to send a private message, so we don't tie up this string.

South Dakota DOES have a sales tax. However, you are correct: the 3% you pay when registering a vehicle in the state is an excise tax, not a sales tax.
To the OP: Keep in mind that once your vehicles are registered in SD, you'll have 90 days to get to the state to get your driver's licenses.
You do NOT have to get them in the same city/county where your address is...they can be applied for anywhere in the state. However, if you are planning on registering to vote at the same time, THAT *must* be done in the same county as your address. Contact your mail forwarding service for information about how to go about registering to vote in SD and for the names of the specific RV parks in the area that will work with you on this issue.

elh0146, sorry about that. I was thinking about state income taxes and writing about sales taxes.
