Currently I try not drive more than 6 hours to camp for a variety of reasons, gasoline prices notwithstanding.

I still look at the enjoyment RVing gives me and the cost benefit it has over many other vacation options. Sure, CGs are no longer cheap but if one has amenities getting there is going to cost something.

If we ever have to go back to gas rationing and odd/even days that could make trips a bit more interesting.

Hubby and I used to pay a fortune in fuel to just get out of town (he's a Mountie and we were posted to some ridiculously remote village). Now, at our now post, we are saving huge on fuel. We never have to drive anywhere and the ferries aren't that bad to get off the Island. We must be saving about 500 a month... no joke. So, my wish to have a TT is being fulfilled by the savings. LOL.

We like to vacation (whenever he has time off) and fuel will just be another cost to work in the budget.

I'm looking at it from the other perspective. The cost of admission got lower since there are a lot of MHs on the market. So I thought it was a good time to buy and did. Now that I have my motorhome, the price of fuel is easing a little. We plan on getting a lot of use out of our MH, and compared to other means I don't think it will really be any more expensive. My wife is not very mobile (low blood pressure), so a MH is really the best solution for us. It beats standing in security lines at the airport!

As I am planning for our trip using various rv park finding sites, I have noticed that the prices of staying at parks hasn't really gone up much, which makes the choice to get the TT that much easier.

Part of our trip will be in florida, visiting friends and exploring and the cost of staying in an RV park vs. the cost of a Hotel, especially in the hotspots like Miami and Orlando, makes the choice pretty easy.

We just got back from a three day stay at a beautiful state park (w/lake for boating, fishing, swimming) just 50 minutes from our house! There's no need to spend thousands on fuel with resources like this so close to home.

On the other hand, I love driving my truck and actually enjoy the farther away places (3+ hours). So when I get the urge to go seversl hundred miles, I just bite the bullet and pay. Does it hurt? Yes! Will I stop doing it? Probably not. To not drive the truck I might as well not have it and if it got to that point I'd sell it.

We all answer "NO, Nope, Not me", but then finish with some sort of work around, "we skip a meal or 2 a week, Im buying a cheaper brand of beer"..... so it is effecting all of us.
We all skimp a bit here and there to continue doing the things we enjoy doing. Most are staying closer to home and staying longer.

Its effecting everyone in one way or another, some just dont realize it.
As for me and my family, we camped more this year than any other, we stayed closer and added an extra day here and there. We camped at more state parks(half the price of most campgrounds).

Buy that camper and make the best of it, our stay here is too short.

We've decided to try to sell our TT, and maybe truck too. Despite being a 1/2 ton truck and very "lite" 22' TT, we just can't accept tossing $4 out the tailpipe every 10-11 miles. We'll take a huge loss on the TT (2002) but we just can't bring ourselves to use it any more.

I think the major factor was that we had bought it (in the $1.20/gal era) for touring - mainly trips averaging 3000-5000 miles. Particularly with just the two of us, I just don't think that's a justifiable use for a conventional RV any longer. And that would be true at $3 or $4. Even $2 was tough for us to take. If we wanted to just go 50 miles and camp, then RVing would obviously still make sense.

Of course with our luck, the minute we sell, oil will go back to $20, and you all can go back to RVing at $.99/gal.

OK! I have a question. I thought the price per barrel has been going down lately? why have gas prices gone up $.13 @gal. overnight? maybe the pro high oil/gas price supporters can answer that one!

I know I can, greed! I`m sure the oil companies will make up a good reason for the higher gas prices.

BTW, were still headed to Disney in nov. with the TT.

'All good responses here. Yes, it costs more to go Rving, but in many cases it's still the best bang for your traveling buck. We just got back from a long trip to San Diego from our home in southeast Texas (Lumberton) for the birth of our first grandchild. To make a long story short - there were four of us and the trip lasted 36 days. The trip cost us $120.00 a day or $30.00 per person. You can't beat that!

Well, we just returned from a trip to Yellowstone and after gathering all the receipts, it looks like we spent $1100 on fuel (around 4500Km's).
The rest of the expenses - food/camping fees/attraction fees came in at $1500.

So.... for a 16 day awesome vacation for a family of 5 (3 boys aged 12, 14, 16....lots-o-food!!), the grand total is $2600. To be honest, I was shocked at how little it came out to be. For that amount of money we couldn't even have flown to Disneyland for 3 days!!??!

I was initially concerned about the cost of fuel, but it turned out to be a bargain! I'm almost tempted to hook up the trailer and bugger off with everyone for another trip.....hold on, no more holiday time from work...sigh.

Cheers,

Mike

Mudflat and Mike E. really put it in perspective for me. Especially that article mudflat wrote, to break it down to about 120 a day, when most of the hotels I have researched along our planned route are around 90- 120 a night, then to throw in restraunts.
