We have been RVing for about fifteen years and have utilized the state parks here in Oregon. I would like to branch out and visit some of these smaller unimproved campgrounds that are maintained by the US Forest Service. I am finding it hard to get information on site sizes and information on these parks. Does anyone know how to get more indepth info on areas other than the state parks. Thanks in advance.

You can get information on site sizes at Recreation.gov, but unfortunately only for the campgrounds that accept reservations. There are great "first come, first serve" campgrounds, but it is a lot harder to get information on those. I usually start with a Benchmark Atlas, then check the USFS, BLM and county websites for the area we are heading to.

Each NF web site is a little different. Look for Recreation and then look for camping.
I (2-10-05) bought a 2002 F350 CC SWD PSD and a new 2003 Citation 10'8. Rancho 9000X & Toyo M55's.I have been a tent camper all my life. I wanted more comfort while doing my Willamette Backcountry Ski Patrol & Crater Lake Ski Patrol duties.11

I have a couple of suggestions. Coleman puts out a directory,"National Forest Campground and Recreation Directory". I found it at Barnes and Noble so if you can't find it on Amazon I would imagine that Barnes and Noble, Borders, or any other large bookstore could get it for you. The entries are listed by state, then the particular forest, then grouped by area. Each entry gives a general description of the campground, indicates if sites may be reserved, if there is a host and tells what kind of camping, i.e., tent, popup, or other RV is suitable. There is a good deal more information as well. Also I call the ranger station in the particular forests we plan to visit and if there is a concessionaire, I get their number and find out all I can about the sites and which ones they prefer. I have had great success with this. Everyone I have talked to has been very helpful. Good Luck, and I wish we were going this year!

If you are a member of AAA they have Campground books for each state. They include the Forest Svc campgrounds (along with commercial, state and Natl Park ones). The books have general directions to the campground and also some info. I've used them very successfully and almost exclusively in many months of traveling in my TC.

I also enjoy the Forest Service CG's and have found you get little info on the internet or anywhere. I just checked most of the suggestions above and didn't find any that listed site sizes. I don't know what rig you have but have never found a problem in any FS CG's with our 25' trailer. Most of the CG's could easily take something up to 30'-35' and many even more. Almost all the National Forests do have websites that give the basics about being on a lake, etc.
