I have read all (I think) of the advice on caulking and re-caulking and am now really confused.

We have a 2005 Lance camper - no slides- that seems to be in very good condition with no apparent leaks. However, there are some places on the sides and front that have caulking added. This is sort of sticky & black .

To be on the safe side we are thinking of re-caulking the whole camper.

Is there a manual with directions for re-caulking?
Special tool for removing old caulking?
The best and easiest caulk to use?

In other words, where do we start? And where do we get the caulking. We are a couple hundred miles from a Lance dealer.

Thanks

Hi Mikee,
We just returned from our dealers, Outdoor Express, Fred Weller their service guru said we were very much due for roof caulking on our 2005 1121. The cost was $240 for everything above the windows. He asked me to bring the rig up in the fall to do the sides. So thanks to your heads up we've dodged a bullet. Preventive Maintenance is the key to keeping the wolf from the door. I have had a continuing problem with the water pump cycling on, even after your sage advice. The problem turned out to be a faulty switch device within the pump. It was replaced at no charge under warranty.
We're back at the beach at our Daughters home looking forward to our Assateague TC Camporee starting on the 8th. They say we'll be down on attendance to around 220 TC's prolly due to economics and fuel. It's a members deal and one of the most unique events. We'll all be down the beach, over sand, for three days of family fun and games ending with a steamed crab feast, Maryland style.
Love to all,

Hello Everyone...

Sorry for not up/dating this past week but had a few Personnel Issues to take care of...

These Pictures were actually taking on Monday,August 4,2008...

This picture shows the types of cauking Rich from New England R/V&Collision Repair uses...From Left to Right.
Green Tube=Dicor Lap sealant
Purple Tube=MHRV2300-for Rubber Roof Repairs
Blue Tube=GE Silicone 1 (Clear)for around area's that have rubber
mouldings(like windows)
Red Tube=GE Silicone 2 (White) for all trim mouldings

You can see the new framing in place.

Another picture of the new framing.look closely and you can see what the water penetration has done to the Luan wood backing on the Filon Side wall.

Galvy sheet metal is back in place to provide strength behind the Filon...

You can see the Filon on the work bench up side down, covered in a Heavy Duty Cardboard. This Cardboard is pretty much junk and will be replaced.

The cardboard seperating from the Filon.

Another picture of the Filon Nose..

The block of wood holding the Filon side away from the framing..You you believe some of that Luan is still damp.!!! Rich the owner has recommended to me that he replace that damaged Luan wood as the filon will not look rite..What a few more bucks at this point..

In the next couple of days I will post the set of pictures I took today-August 111,2008

I also have another set back on the camper...Rich has found a set of severely rotted screws in the very lower section of the camper where the very floor of the Camper(Outside) has the 90 degree galvy moulding -that goes from the underneath of the camper to the side..The galvy moulding is about 1&1/2" by 1&1/2 inch.Rich is going to pull the entire moulding off tomorrow and let me know what he finds..

P/S--For all you 1161 Owners how have Pvt.Me with requests of that issue.I have taken pictures of the one that is in the shop now..Now you want to talk about not being deligent in your exterior cauking, wait till you see this baby..And get this--This 1161 was already torn apart(read entire filon side removed) once from another dealer(Please do not ask as I am not telling who)and supposeidly totally re done...28 months ago----Yikes

Hello Everyone...

This is the set of pictures I took yesterday,(Monday-August 11,2008)
As you can see progress is being made...

The Filon is back on the nose of the Camper..

Another picture of the Filon back on the T/C..

As I mention in the previous post,Rich replaced the Luan backing on the side wall.He is waiting for the adheasive to dry before attaching the Main Side Wall..

This shows the Hot Water Heat removed so Rich,s crew can get at the metal plate that holds and strengthen's the Atwood Jacks that attach to the Camper.Lance Cal,uses a combination of Lag and Threaded Bolts to attached the Jack Bracket to the T/C.

This is the metal bracket in the inside corner.Since I am removing the old exterior rusted plates that hold the Atwoods in place,Along with installing the newly PowderCoated brackets in all 4 corners,Rick recomended we Install Grade 8 Bolts/nuts&washers as well and elimate some of the Lag Screws.

Straight on picture of whats behind your Hot Water heater.

Another interior vieu of whats behind a Lance 1121 Hot Water heater.
Note#1 The black wire with the red marker tape is my 2 gauge feed wire to the Lance factory installed 40 amp D/C main Circuit Breaker.I have eliminated the original 8 ga wire.
Note#2 The gray box you see in the picture in my automatic transfer switch for my 2000-watt Inverter and 120 volt Microwave Circuit. When I turn on my Inverter, that Transfere Switch takes the 120volt Microwave Circuit(Positive and negative) completely off the Lance Panel Board and that circuit new gets its 120volt feed from the Inverter..

This is a picture of the Steetmetal baffle that was installed as part of the Dometic Refrigerator Recal.Rick is in the process of pulling the fridge out 6 or so inches so his Crew could get at the metal plate for the Atwood Jacks. If you look closely you can see that metal bracket..

As I was leaving to catch the train, the first of 4 newly Powdercoated corner brackets gets partically installed

For you People who leave your Campers on your Trucks for extended Periods..MAKE SURE YOUR T/C IS SLANTED TOWARD THE REAR --SO WATER CANNOT BUILD UP INSIDE THE TRUCK BED..As part of having every screw removed and re/sealed--ALL THE SCREWS THAT HOLD THIS GALVY MOULDING IN PLACE--are rotted..Rich is going to remove the moulding completely and have a looksey but feels its just a case of OLDMIKEE having the wrong pitch in the camperor the truck weep holes clogged.

Well that will do it for today..

Mike Tassinari

I will next post the pictures of the Lance 1161

Mike - do you have a ETA on your fixed camper? Are you going to be able to get any beach time in this summer?

Mike,

I would have eliminated the front cab-over window while the fromt of the camper was off. It's a known area for leakes.
